Chapitre 20: The Devil

For many pirates, the only path to the New World consisted of coating their ships with mangrove resin, diving 10,000 meters, and crossing a huge underwater tunnel beneath the Red Line, passing through Fishman Island.

In the years following the death of Gol D. Roger, the waters above Fishman Island and its surroundings had become increasingly dangerous.

Rumors about a marine "Devil" had begun to circulate in the Sabaody Archipelago, sowing fear among navigators.

In a maritime zone near Sabaody, a pirate ship advanced under a clear sky.

The vessel, christened "Dark Fortune," stood out for its unconventional design: its hull, painted a deep green, was decorated with intricate golden patterns that shone under the midday sun.

At the bow of the ship stood Captain Daisen. He was a man of medium height, with a robust build. His tanned face was adorned with a braided beard with small bells that jingled with each movement. Most striking, however, were his eyes: one emerald green and the other white like a blind man's.

"Ah, the sweet aroma of victory!" exclaimed Daisen, inhaling deeply. "Boys, we're one step away from greatness! Sabaody awaits us, and beyond... the New World!"

Beside him, the navigator Kuro observed the front with unease. He was a tall, thin man, with pale skin that seemed translucent under the sunlight. His hair, a silvery white, contrasted dramatically with his onyx-black eyes.

"Captain," Kuro murmured, his voice barely a whisper, "something isn't right. The sea... it's too calm. Not even the fish dare to come to the surface."

Daisen let out a booming laugh. "Kuro, my paranoid friend! Don't you see? It's a sign. The sea itself is giving us passage. We've brought a valuable cargo, and Sabaody will receive us with open arms. Prepare to swim in gold!"

But beneath the seemingly tranquil surface of the boat, a colossal shadow lurked.

Morgan followed them silently.

His eyes watched the ship with hunger. "Ah, humans and their greed," he thought. "Always so predictable, always so... delicious."

But he had considered his options. He could destroy the ship, devour the crew in seconds. But something stopped him. The mention of a "valuable cargo" had piqued his interest.

"Slaves," Morgan mused. "Flesh that walks and talks. Interesting, but complicated. Eating them would be... unrefined. Freeing them, too noble for a monster like me."

He carefully controlled his breathing, emitting barely a soft bubbling that was lost in the immensity of the sea. He didn't want to alert other Sea Kings in the area; this prey was his and his alone.

Like a shadow, Morgan followed the ship to the vicinity of Sabaody.

His body, as long as three pirate ships lined up, blended perfectly into the growing darkness.

At dawn on the second day, Morgan stealthily ascended. A malicious smile spread across his face as he saw his prey.

Minutes later, the pirate ship, now encased in a protective bubble, began its descent. The daylight faded rapidly as they submerged deeper, replaced by darkness.

The ship's lamps only managed to illuminate about ten meters around them, creating a fragile sense of security.

What the crew didn't know was that, a hundred meters away, Morgan's eyes never stopped watching them.

His body, perfectly adapted to the depths, was invisible in the blackness of the ocean.

On the ship's deck, Kuro nervously scanned the surroundings. After a few moments of tension, he turned to his captain.

"Captain! Everything is calm, no danger in sight," he reported.

Upon hearing this, Daisen emerged from the cabin, walking towards the bow. Along the way, he took an orange from a crew member's hands and began peeling it with his knife.

"Of course everything is quiet," he responded with arrogance. "The sea knows how to recognize a true pirate. It respects us."

But his confidence evaporated in an instant. As he peeled the fruit, his eyes caught a movement in the darkness.

Two gigantic eyeballs blinked in the darkness.

"WHAT THE HELL! A Sea King!" Daisen shouted in fright.

Before they could react, Morgan made himself visible to everyone.

His body was so vast that it seemed the ocean itself was rising against them. One of his claws, as large as half the ship, closed around the protective bubble.

"Attack! Defend the ship!" Daisen ordered, panic evident in his voice.

"No, captain!" interjected the carpenter. "If we attack, we'll only manage to enrage it. We'll die faster."

"Then what do you propose?" asked Daisen, desperate.

"Captain, aren't you a Devil Fruit user?" suggested another crew member.

Daisen, almost beside himself, responded: "I'm a Paramecia with suction power! Do you want me to try to suck up this marine monster? It would be like trying to drink the ocean with a straw!"

Morgan, aware of the terror he caused, tilted his colossal head.

He brought one of his eyes close to the terrified Daisen. With care, he spoke:

"Well, well. It seems I finally remembered that I was going to have visitors in the depths."

Kuro, mouth agape, barely managed to articulate: "The... the Sea King... it spoke!"

Another member of the crew, his voice barely a whisper, added: "C-Could it be? Is this the legendary Devil of the depths that is so rumored about?"
