Chapitre 76: The Kiss

Anastasia wasn't sure how many times she had blinked, her mind refusing to let her rest. Staring up at the ceiling, endless thoughts raced through her head. She turned onto her right side, squeezing her eyes shut in another attempt to sleep when a sudden sound of something breaking pierced the silence.

Her heart raced as she quickly sat up. 'What was that?' She threw off the covers and slid out of bed, cautiously approaching the door. "Daniel..." she called softly, her voice barely above a whisper as she cracked the door open.

No answer.

The house was eerily silent, the only sound of her own breathing. It was already past midnight, and the emptiness of the bungalow made every little noise feel louder, more threatening. She craned her neck to look downstairs, wondering if a stray cat could have gotten in, even though she knew that was unlikely—they'd never had pets.
