The sound of my phone vibrating on the table pulls me out of my thoughts. I glance at the screen, my heart skipping a beat when I see the Police Chief's name. What now?

"Hello?" I try to keep my voice steady, though I already feel the familiar tightness creeping up in my chest.

"Ella, it's the Chief of Police." His voice is gruff but calm, which helps ease my nerves a little. "I wanted to let you know that the case went smoothly. Jessica pleaded guilty to all charges."

"Really?" I lean back in my chair, releasing a long breath. "That's... that's good. I mean, great. I didn't think she would."

"Neither did we," he says. "But it seems her lawyer advised her not to drag it out. The evidence we had against her was overwhelming. Her pleading guilty was the only sensible thing to do."

I nod, even though he can't see me. I picture Jessica in court, her face twisted in frustration, finally cornered by her own lies and violence. The thought is oddly satisfying.
