For a long time, Sharlo practiced. As his Conqueror's Haki began to fade, he suddenly opened his eyes wide. Another surge of intense Haki radiated from him, even stronger than before. The waves rippled violently, and the palm leaves on the beach trembled.
Sharlo laughed heartily at the sight of fish fainted from his Haki. "I'm truly a genius," he thought, retracting his Haki and restoring calm to the surroundings, save for the unconscious fish washed ashore.
"Ha ha ha ha! Finally, I can control my Conqueror's Haki at will. I've taken another step towards becoming a strong warrior," Sharlo exclaimed, slashing the air with his sword. The air filled with increasingly powerful sword strikes. He continued until he was utterly exhausted.
Time passed as Sharlo trained. Although he initially planned to set sail at eighteen, circumstances delayed him. His ship wasn't ready, and he wasn't willing to set out in a barrel like Luffy. Moreover, the seas were turbulent, with the Rocks Pirates wreaking havoc and pirates becoming more numerous.
Every month, a pirate crew would raid the port, only to be killed by Sharlo and converted into bounty money, collected by his loyal subordinates to avoid drawing attention to himself. This vigilance made the island remarkably safe.
Carmie Island thrived as a mid-point for the Sea Transport King, Umis. The population grew from over a thousand to more than seven thousand in five years, many fleeing the New World or rescued by Sharlo.
Randolph Chamberlain, Umis' subordinate, witnessed Sharlo's pirate-killing prowess and became more deferential, consulting Sharlo on every matter. Sharlo, annoyed by this, delegated Ivan to handle these discussions.
With pirate numbers increasing, Sharlo couldn't deal with them all alone. Last year, he selected fifty promising subordinates and confirmed their loyalty using his Observation Haki. Sharlo decided to train them weekly.
These subordinates, either his brothers or rescued slaves, excelled in their training, capable of handling multiple pirates simultaneously. Some even learned techniques from the Navy's Rokushiki. They would be invaluable when Sharlo set sail.
Sharlo also ensured some subordinates learned navigation. Chamberlain, knowing many sailors, doctors, and shipwrights, helped recruit navigators and instructors. Sharlo entrusted Ivan to oversee their training, and even had his maids learn medical skills from the recruited doctors.
Sharlo saved many slaves, including women with nowhere to go, who he employed. With skilled shipwrights and cooks already on the island, Sharlo was confident he could quickly assemble a crew when the time came. His immediate need was a suitable ship.
Initially, Sharlo planned to build a 50-meter ship, but with increased funds from pirate bounties, he aimed higher. Chamberlain, recognizing Sharlo's potential, supported this by recruiting sailors and procuring top-quality materials, though not the legendary Adam Wood.
Sharlo decided to build a 100-meter-long, 20-meter-wide, and 30-meter-high ship, which would take about a year due to limited shipwrights on the island. In the meantime, Sharlo trained daily, mastering Armament Haki.
Three months ago, a notorious pirate with a 100-million-berry bounty arrived at Carmie Island. Sensing malicious intent, Sharlo immediately launched a flying slash at the pirate ship. To his surprise, someone on the ship blocked the attack with their fists, piquing Sharlo's interest.
He let the pirate crew dock but evacuated the port, leaving only himself to face them. The pirates, living up to their reputation, fired cannons at Sharlo, who effortlessly deflected the cannonballs into the sea with his sword.
As Sharlo prepared for the pirates' assault, he suddenly felt a chill, puzzling him as it was only autumn.
