Chapter 87: Strong Assault (I)
Although the method Alex used for communication was rather ancient—relying on manpower—it proved to be incredibly effective. Conan, the paladin, rushed to the Order Fortress at his fastest possible speed and reported the situation at the rear base. The Order Fortress, upon receiving Conan's report, was shocked. They had already suspected something was wrong at the rear since communication had been lost, but they hadn't expected the situation to be this severe.
Moreover, the Order Fortress itself wasn't in great shape either.
The current monster calamity had pushed them to their limits!
This year's monster calamity had brought not only an overwhelming number of monsters, but also three lord-class beasts attacking the fortress!
These three lord-class monsters had tied down the two powerful warriors guarding the Order Fortress, making it impossible for them to leave and send out exploration teams under the uncertain circumstances.
Upon learning of the situation, the Order Fortress immediately dispatched a small team to break through the blockade and seek reinforcements from the rear.
When the temple learned about the Order Fortress's situation, it caused a huge uproar!!
The Order Fortress was the only barrier protecting the northern lands. If it were to fall, the monster calamity would sweep through, bringing disaster to the entire northern region!
In response, the temple swiftly gathered every bit of combat power they could muster in the northern lands and sent it all to the Order Fortress, hoping to hold back the terrifying monster tide. But as the saying goes, when it rains, it pours. Just as the headquarters of the Northern Temple managed to assemble reinforcements and sent them off, they received another request for help from Ston.
This new plea for aid gave the temple another headache.
The Six-Armed Snake Demon, Bella!!
The monster calamity was already a major problem, but the Six-Armed Snake Demon Lord Bella was equally fearsome, a name that struck terror into everyone. When the high-ranking members of the temple learned of this name from the Pegasus Knights, they were nearly scared out of their wits! They had no idea why the cultists were gathering statues of Bella, but whatever the cultists were planning, it was bound to be bad news.
And given the current circumstances, along with the abnormal attacks on the Order Fortress... the looming sense of a grand conspiracy was too obvious to ignore.
However, the temple's options were limited. The Holy Church was a massive country, and while it had its own army, that army was used to maintain order across various regions and couldn't be easily mobilized. Furthermore, the Northern Alliance didn't share a direct border with the Holy Church, making the northern region more of an "enclave" for the Holy Church. While the Holy Church had jurisdiction over the Order Fortress, it was limited to that fortress alone.
Even if they could mobilize troops, the logistics were a nightmare. They couldn't just use the temple's teleportation arrays to send an army into the Northern Alliance's territory—doing so would be akin to parachuting an army into a foreign country's heartland, practically an act of war!
And besides, distant water couldn't put out a nearby fire. Even if the Holy Church managed to gather reinforcements, it would take too long for them to arrive. By that time, it would be far too late.
Thankfully, the temple wasn't bound by rigid thinking.
I really hadn't expected the temple in this world to be so adaptable.
Looking at the disheveled warriors in front of him, Alex was speechless. In fact, among the reinforcements brought back by the Pegasus Knights on their second trip, only half were temple warriors and Pegasus Knights. The rest... were mercenaries!
That's right—according to the Pegasus Knight, after realizing they didn't have enough manpower, the temple simply went to the Mercenary Guild and issued a commission. After all, the temple was a huge organization with plenty of money but a shortage of manpower. And to the temple, problems that could be solved with money weren't really problems.
This time, the temple sent ten Pegasus Knights and ten mercenaries. This was mainly because each Pegasus could only carry a maximum of two people, and the temple had no more Pegasus Knights available.
Alex was starting to feel that the temple in this world was completely different from what he had imagined. His initial impressions of the temple came from Williams' memories, and it was easy to imagine that a cultist wouldn't have much of a favorable opinion of the Order Temple. Later, during his brief stay in the temple, Alex had only thought it seemed similar to the religious orders he had seen in novels, games, and animations.
But today, Alex saw a different side of the temple. This massive organization wasn't as binary as he had expected, viewing itself as purely good and all opposition as evil. Nor did they seem overly constrained by identity or rules. They used whatever means were necessary, employing any force they could. Upon reflection, it made sense. The temple didn't worship gods of justice, goodness, or light. They followed the god of order.
And order was never simply black and white.
"We can't delay any longer. If we do, that destruction mage will grow suspicious. We must act immediately."
The old bishop looked up at the sky. The guiding star was almost in position.
"I suggest we split into two groups," Stone spoke up, clearly the most experienced when it came to combat strategies.
"Those pests flying overhead are really annoying. I propose the Pegasus Knights focus on dispersing and eliminating the small demons in the air. Once the enemy is thrown into disarray, the ground forces can charge in and completely disrupt their ritual."
A classic air-ground coordinated strike.
"Then let the Pegasus Knights handle the small demons, while the mercenaries take care of the enemies on the ground," the old bishop quickly decided. Time was running out, and they couldn't afford to waste any more.
"Sir Stone, you'll lead the Pegasus Knights. As for the mercenaries on the ground…"
"I'll take care of them," Alex stepped forward, raising his hand. He had noticed earlier that Stone had subtly signaled for him to join the aerial assault, but Alex had thought it over and declined. To be honest, while the Pegasus Knights were skilled, they were too rigid, too military for Alex's liking. Fighting alongside them made him uncomfortable. The mercenaries, on the other hand, felt more relatable to him, like joining a random team of new allies in a game dungeon.
Besides, mercenaries were usually carefree and didn't fuss over small details. If Alex had to use some of his unique abilities, he could easily brush it off among them. But under the watchful eyes of the Pegasus Knights? That would be much harder to explain.
"Then it's settled. I leave it to you, Sir Alex," the old bishop said, giving Alex a glance before pulling out a crystal the size of a finger from his robes.
"This is a communication crystal. It can break through signal jamming over short distances. I know you have a unique way of communicating with the angel, but I hope you can use this to report the situation to us. The mercenaries are in your hands. I'll take the rest and provide support from the side."
The bishop spoke rapidly, handing the communication crystal to Alex. Then, turning his gaze to the small demon under his control, he gave it a look. The demon, which had been controlled by the bishop, immediately got up and flew into the night sky.
"I've already controlled it. When it returns, it will tell the destruction mage that the people he was waiting for were delayed due to a wolf pack attack in the forest. This should buy us some time, but not too long."
"Good," Stone nodded, satisfied with the bishop's plan. He then glanced at Alex.
"Let's begin."
