Chapter 46: Using Cheats to Mass Produce
The battle ended quickly.
Even though the mimetic aliens could attack from both long and close range, the Zerg didn't suffer much from their attacks. Two Hydralisks and seven Zerglings easily took them down. The only losses were two Zerglings who were too exuberant when they jumped out of the ground and got impaled by the aliens' antennae as they died.
After this battle, Alex had a better understanding of these mimetic aliens. Although their movement patterns were similar to biological creatures, they didn't seem to be purely living beings but rather some form of energy lifeforms.
As for their combat strength, it was about the average between a Zergling and a Hydralisk. This was only discovered after Miruune analyzed the remnants of the aliens in the hatchery. Fortunately, Alex's guess was correct. The Zerg did detect a unique gene sequence in the remains of these creatures. According to Miruune's analysis, this gene sequence seemed to grant immunity to time reversal.
Moreover...
"Master, this gene sequence can accelerate the Zerg's speed. I believe it will greatly enhance the Zerg's combat power."
"Do you know how it works?"
"Of course, Master. Based on my experiments, this gene sequence can accelerate the time flow for the Zerg, giving them stronger combat abilities."
"...Is that so?"
Hearing this, Alex frowned. Miruune's explanation was clear. In simple terms, this gene sequence would make the host's time flow faster compared to other creatures. For a normal person, one second might pass, but for the host of this gene sequence, two seconds would pass. Naturally, this had advantages, such as increased attack speed, frequency, and overall combat efficiency.
"Are there any side effects? If I recall correctly, the enemy also has a control system similar to ours. I don't want my Zerg to turn against me on the battlefield."
"It causes accelerated aging of the host, but this is not a problem for the Zerg, Master. As for the possibility of being controlled, it's practically zero. The Zerg are always loyal to their master."
"That's true."
Hearing Miruune's response, Alex thought about it and realized it made sense. The Zerg either die in battle or are on the verge of death. He had never heard of a Zerg dying of old age. Accelerated aging wasn't a significant issue for the Zerg.
In fact, it was unknown if the Zerg even aged in the traditional sense. From Alex's memory, the older the Zerg, the more formidable they became. Accelerating time flow might also accelerate the Zerg's natural evolution.
No way!
Thinking about this, Alex was startled. If this was true, then the alien genes in "Edge of Tomorrow" were incredibly beneficial for the Zerg. Accelerating both combat and evolution was like using a game cheat to speed up and having a bunch of Zerglings evolve into winged mutations after a stroll. No need to unlock the tech tree!
No wonder Miruune looked so eager when she talked about it. She must have been impatient to enjoy this genetic feast.
As for the control issue, Alex decided to put it aside. Even if the Zerg were controlled, he could still activate Kerrigan's soul stone. The Queen of Blades would control all Zerg, and Alex doubted any alien force could surpass the Xel'Naga's power to wrest control from her.
With Alex's approval, Miruune immediately began the genetic modification of the Zerg. Alex didn't know how the Zerg accomplished it, but by the next morning, Miruune reported that all Zerg nests and units had successfully absorbed the "time gene."
Additionally, Alex received an unexpected surprise from Miruune. The time gene not only benefited combat units but also Zerg structures and drones.
Since this gene accelerated time flow, it increased speed, and since Zerg buildings were essentially living organisms, they also evolved after absorbing the "time gene." The most noticeable improvements were faster production, research speed, and quicker transformation of drones into structures.
Although the time advantage was less than three seconds, Alex knew that even a slight advantage was significant. Imagine playing a game where all your units were three seconds faster than your opponent's. Within five minutes, your opponent would accuse you of cheating.
The Zerg continued to expand, while Alex, holding a phone he got from some thugs, watched a live broadcast. On the screen, an elderly man in a military uniform, with white hair and a commanding presence, was speaking passionately.
"This time, we will counterattack. We will completely repel the alien invaders and show them the power of humanity!"
The scene shifted to countless transport ships taking off, while the reporter's face was tense and serious.
"Today, brave warriors will cross the strait to face those terrifying alien monsters. Let's wish them victory and a safe return. The enemy will ultimately fail, and victory will be ours!"
That's right, the enemy will ultimately fail, but the victory belongs to the Swarm.
Alex put down his phone and glanced at the time. 10:23:45. Today is the day the storyline begins.
If Alex guessed correctly, Tom Cruise would go to the battlefield today, encounter that peculiar alien in the beach battle, scream "I'm hooked, I'm hooked, dad!" and then die, only to restart again. Now, Alex was looking to see if he could gain any benefit from this.
As for himself, Alex wasn't worried. This was also an experiment for him. The plan was already in motion, and even if he went back a few days, his Zerg forces were already established and couldn't be interfered with.
Three hours later, Alex suddenly felt a jolt in his heart. He stood up and looked into the distance. In the next moment, the wind and clouds suddenly changed.
Almost in the blink of an eye, Alex saw the world in front of him begin to change. Everything seemed to be in reverse, but at a much faster speed, making Alex feel as if he were in a time tunnel. He could barely see the sky and the ground.
This lasted for less than ten seconds. Then, Alex felt a sudden jolt, and the scenery around him became clear again. Everything seemed unchanged, but Alex could keenly sense that something was different.
He turned his head to see Miruune standing quietly beside him, watching him. "What's the situation, Miruune?"
"Just as you predicted, Master. We should have just traveled through time. Do you remember what we were doing before?"
"Discussing the next evolution plan for the Zerglings?"
"It seems you also retained your memory, Master."
Hearing Alex's response, Miruune smiled. Alex shrugged, saying nothing more. He suspected that his safe passage through this time reversal was due to the Dimensional Codex.
In his settings, the Dimensional Codex possessed powers beyond time and space, and it could protect its holder. Now, it seemed that the settings Alex wrote for show were quite useful.
"Report the situation."
"The Zerg nests are all functioning normally. The number of Zerg units has not decreased. According to the drones' reports, the resource nodes they previously depleted have been restored."
"Oh?" Hearing this, Alex's eyes lit up. "Does this mean we have unlimited resources?"
"Indeed, my Master." Miruune's voice also grew excited. The Zerg most desired power and resources, and now they had everything they needed.
"Then, let's proceed." Thinking of this, Alex quickly made a decision. "Let the nests hatch more drones, collect resources, and produce more Zerg units. When the time is right, we will show the people of this world our strength!"
