Chapter 40: Child of Chaos
"Thud!!!"
The stone coffin began to tremble again. This time, the undead seemed to sense some danger, and they even abandoned their entanglement with Alex and the others, turning to stare intently at the coffin.
If the Lich Lord were here, perhaps these undead would still follow its commands, but now that the Lich Lord had inexplicably "disappeared," these undead began to act on instinct. Clearly, whatever was inside that coffin was more of a "threat" to them than Malt's group.
"What should we do, Mentor?"
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Alex quickly regrouped with the other temple knights and the two grand knights.
However, their expressions remained grave, showing no signs of relaxation despite the Lich Lord's sudden departure.
Hearing Alex's question, Stone frowned deeply, staring intently at the coffin without a word.
"Thud!!!"
At that moment, the coffin in the center of the magic circle jumped up. The chains binding the coffin finally gave way under the strain, snapping with a series of sharp cracks.
The heavy lid of the coffin flew into the air and then crashed to the ground. Simultaneously, Alex felt a very peculiar aura emanate from the coffin. Sensing this aura, Malt and Stone's expressions changed drastically.
"This is bad!"
"It's the Child of Chaos, we need to leave now!"
But before they could finish their warnings, the coffin trembled again. Alex felt a faint wave pass by him, spreading rapidly.
Before he could react, he saw Stone collapse to one knee beside him, drenched in sweat, his teeth clenched.
Gripping his greatsword tightly, the once-mighty paladin now looked like a frail old man, struggling even to move.
Malt and the other temple knights fared no better, with two heavily injured knights collapsing unconscious.
The undead attacking them were even worse off: the undead giant fell silent, and the Death Harbinger and the troublesome flesh golem disintegrated into bones and flesh.
"What... is happening?"
Gripping his sword, Alex stared in bewilderment at the scene. He had no idea why everyone else suddenly collapsed. Was he supposed to play along and pretend?
"Be... careful... it's the Child of Chaos..."
As Alex considered whether to "perform" his collapse too, Stone spoke up, though he looked extremely weak.
The once-robust warrior now struggled to speak. Gripping his greatsword tightly, he tried to stand, but his legs felt as heavy as lead.
"It's the most terrifying entity at the edge of twilight, the enemy of order... It can create an area that isolates all order forces..."
So that's why you've all turned into this?
Hearing Stone's explanation, Alex suddenly understood. He knew that the forces people used in this world were based on order.
If he had to make an analogy, it was like all skills required MP to cast. The Child of Chaos was like a built-in anti-magic field, sealing off all your MP... Wait, really?
Checking his status, Alex found that all his skills were grayed out and unusable, even his soul stone activation ability.
Damn! No wonder the Lich Lord ran!
Alex finally understood why the Bone Duke fled without a word. According to what he'd learned from the Temple, magic and other powers were part of order forces.
The undead created by the Bone Duke relied on undead magic, also a type of order force. Relative to the living, these undead were even more fragile before the Child of Chaos because their existence depended on order forces.
Once these forces were nullified or sealed, they were doomed.
The Bone Duke likely faced the same problem. Though one of the strongest members of the Council of the Dead, he was still an undead.
The Child of Chaos's "anti-magic field" probably affected him too, so he fled quickly! This is a nightmare!
Gripping his sword, Alex stared at the coffin, not daring to breathe. Under his gaze, a tall black figure slowly rose from the coffin.
It was a knight.
At first glance, it seemed no different from a regular human, except that it stood about two or three meters tall.
Covered in rusted armor, red light glowed faintly from the gaps in its helmet. Holding a massive, sharp sword, the knight stood silently, surveying its surroundings.
"Mentor, what are this thing's abilities?"
Gripping his sword, Alex asked without turning his head.
"Like, what skills does it have? What abilities...?"
"None."
"What? What do you mean by none?"
Hearing Stone's answer, Alex was dumbfounded. Wasn't this supposed to be a boss? Since when did bosses not have powerful abilities?
"The Child of Chaos is a creature born of chaos..."
Malt, having caught his breath, spoke in a low voice.
"And all skills and magic come from the blessings of order. They can't learn to use such power, but even so, they are still formidable enemies. These chaotic creatures can pose a terrifying threat with just their physical bodies. Be careful, it's said that they have immense strength and incredible speed..."
"I see... Wait a minute."
Hearing this, Alex nodded, then suddenly froze. Why did this scene look so familiar?
A giant monster enemy, unable to use soul stones or skills... Isn't this just like Free World?
Well then, let's see who's stronger, you or Gundyr. With a slight smirk, Alex reached to his waist and drew a short sword.
Then, Alex took a few steps forward, stopping in front of the creature. He gripped his sword tightly with his right hand, pointing it straight ahead at the Child of Chaos.
Raising his left hand, holding the short sword, across his chest, he nodded towards the Child of Chaos.
"Huh?"
Seeing this, everyone was stunned. Malt turned to Stone in surprise.
"Stone, what is he doing? And why isn't he affected by the chaos field?"
For people of the order, the Child of Chaos was extremely frightening because its chaos field isolated their power of order.
This applied to paladins like Malt and Stone too. Their superhuman strength was due to the power of order, much like martial artists in wuxia novels who could send people flying with a palm strike due to their inner strength. Without it, they were nearly powerless.
"The kid is special... but this stance, could it be..."
Stone's answer was vague. Holy protection was a secret, and although he and Malt were friends, it wasn't something to be shared lightly.
However, seeing Alex's stance, Stone's eyes lit up. He had often discussed the world of his "dreams" with Alex and learned about the Drakemoore Undead Legion, warriors who fought to eliminate the Abyss but eventually became what they hated.
Stone had felt a kinship with the Undead Legion, as it reminded him of the Order Legion at the edge of twilight, who fought chaos to protect order and civilization. Stone had once been part of that legion.
Now...
"That stance... could it be..."
"Roar!!"
The Child of Chaos, ignorant of Alex's actions, roared and leaped forward with its massive sword.
As the Child of Chaos's sword came crashing down, Alex rolled to the side, narrowly dodging it. His sword struck the creature's side, sparks flying.
The Child of Chaos staggered, then quickly swung its sword in a half-circle on the ground, aiming at Alex again.
This time, instead of retreating, Alex rolled forward, closing the distance and slashing the creature again. The Child of Chaos stepped back, swinging its sword at Alex's neck, but Alex ducked, avoiding the blade.
Seizing the moment, Alex's sword burst with holy light.
"Slash!!"
He swung his sword upwards, leaving a deep wound on the Child of Chaos's chest, causing it to stagger. Before it could react, Alex struck again, forcing it back. Leaping into the air, Alex spun, his sword forming a bright arc before crashing down on the creature.
Under Alex's relentless triple combo, the Child of Chaos was flung back, crashing into a distant stone wall with a resounding thud.
Dust settled.
Alex lowered his sword and exhaled deeply.
Behind him, Stone and Malt were wide-eyed in disbelief.
