Chapitre 2: Chapter 2. Welcome to Re:Zero

'Mordred, huh? And a Saber?' Roy thought while staring at the system window. ///I rewrote the previous chapter from the mid-point, so check it out. The MC had already summoned his first Servant. Plus, the Class of summoned Servant now cannot be freely chosen and the result cannot be reset with Return by Death.///

Was he compatible with Mordred? Why?

What did it mean that he was 'compatible' with her? It could not be that they were similar, because they were certainly not.

He certainly knew Mordred as a Servant rather well.

In truth, Mordred was one of the Servants from Fate that he knew the most about and quite liked, even though as a person she had many issues and was even sort-of dumb; she wasn't a beauty either.

And why did he get the Saber class first?

It was not bad, but he personally felt that he would be slightly more suited to be a Caster, and that it might be the first choice.

After thinking of all this for a moment, Roy shook his head and focused on a notification at the front of his vision.

[Do you want to integrate with the Saber - Mordred Pendragon?]

[Yes] [No]

He couldn't change the result anymore, so he might as well integrate with his summoned Heroic Spirit.

'Anyway, I'm glad I have the system in the first place. Let's see…'

As he selected 'yes', his body momentarily lit up with a faint light and Roy felt himself being filled with power and energy.

It was a very pleasurable feeling and he could not let out a small sigh to express how well he felt.

This lasted for a few short seconds.

[Congratulations! Integration complete!]

[Saber - MOrdred Pendragon - is now your Main Servant!]

[Integration Percentage: 10%.]

The notification appeared, then faded moments later.

His face being incredibly excited at the feeling of power billowing from within him, Roy began to slightly jump up on the soles of his feet like a boxer.

He then sent out a few light and lightning-fast jabs into the air.

'I feel so light!… And so energetic. It really feels great! It's as if I was reborn.'

'Amazing!'

Just as Roy was expressing his joy at his transformation, he heard people on the street beginning to shout in a panic.

"Aaah!"

"Aghhhh!"

"Hey, watch out!"

'Hm? What's wrong?' Roy quickly walked out from in between the buildings to assess the situation.

Then he noticed a carriage that was about to run over and trample a kid.

Roy instinctively took a slow step toward the kid's direction, but he immediately realized that there was nothing that he could do from his location and with the distance between them.

The other onlookers on the other side of the street simply looked at the scene with startled expression and none of them showed any intention of doing anything.

But among them Roy noticed a peculiar looking Asian kid that was kneeling on the ground and waving around his arms in a clown-like performance.

The reason the bot was peculiar was because, unlike everyone else, he wore clearly rather modern clothing, a tracksuit, and even held a plastic bag in his hand.

Roy stared with a confused expression as the boy suddenly shot out his palm to the front.

'Is he casting magic?'

Roy could not help but expect something, so he turned to look in the direction of the boy still sprawled on the street.

He expected something, something magical…

But ultimately he was left disappointed, because nothing happened.

The kid still laid on the ground, seemingly knocked unconscious.

Meanwhile the carriage continued on its way without even bothering to slow down for some reason, about to run over the kid at any moment.

Roy felt a stab in his heart at seeing such a gruesome and pitiful scene, but knew well that he really could do nothing.

Certainly not when he only had 10% of a Servant Strength and was even a Saber.

Fortunately, at the last moment, a man in full-plate armor dashed toward the center of the street, intercepted the kid, then rolled over the street with the boy in his arms just in time to make both of them avoid the carriage.

"Yeaaah!"

"Yaaah!"

"Great job!"

The onlookers all loudly cheered toward the knight who saved the kid, while the knight raised up his fist in victory.

Roy also felt slightly relieved.

However, at that time all of his feelings were dulled as he was overcome with a strong sense of Deja Vu.

Lizard-drawn carriages could appear in all kinds of worlds, so it was not a solid indication of anything. But the current situation, paired with the lizard-carriages and the Asian kid in a tracksuit and with a plastic bag, made him think of one single world: Re:Zero.

Roy looked toward the Asian kid again.

On the other hand, the boy paid him no mind as he let out a disappointed sight, turned and began walking along the street with slouched down shoulders

Roy blinked his eyes. 'Holy crap. That's Natsuki Subaru, no doubt!'

After coming to this realization, Roy suddenly recalled that he still had not read the last among the three messages from the system, one that should talk about the world he was in.

But at that time he received two new notifications.

[You received a Campaign Mission]

[Mission name: A Tumultuous First Day <Arc 1>]

[Goal: Ensure Emilia's safety.]

[Reward: 5-10 Integration Points. 1 Summoning Card.]

<...>

[You received a Bonus Mission]

[Goal: Introduce yourself to the 'Protagonist' Natsuki Subaru.]

[Reward: 1 Integration Point.]

Roy was lost in a daze for a moment after glancing at the 'missions', which confirmed his suspicion that the boy he just saw was Natsuki Subaru and he was now in the Re:Zero world.

'Hmmm?... I have to save Emilia? And the reward is a second Summoning Card?' Roy slightly raised his eyebrows in surprise.

He could summon a second Servant already, as long as he passes this day successfully?

That was certainly nice!

'No, it doesn't say that I have to save Emilia. I just have to ensure 'her safety'...'

'But damn, first I can't let Subaru get away!'

Pushing all of this aside, Roy sprung out from his spot to chase after Subaru, who had already resumed walking.

The bonus mission asked him to introduce himself to Subaru, so he could certainly not lose him.

After getting to the other side of the street and catching up to Subaru, Roy did not immediately approach him, but simply followed him a small distance behind him, and then focused on his system again.

With a thought he hid the two quest messages and called out the Message Box.

Then he opened his last unread message from earlier while slowly walking along the street.

[Introduction to the world.]

[Congratulations! The world selected for your incarnation is a parallel world known by you as the world of Re:Zero.]

[Due to the protection of the Holy Grail, your soul was affected by the <Blessing of Satella> upon arrival, connecting you to <Natsuki Subaru>.]

[Thanks to <Blessing of Satella>, your soul will return to a saved point in the past upon death; the same thing will happen when Natsuki Subaru dies.]

[Note: Your choices and points of the System will not be reset upon going back in time.]

[Good luck!]

'That's it. That's a bit short.'

'But, I'm also affected by Return by Death? Well, that's good!'

Roy let out a breath of relief.

Since Return by Death granted him a form of limited immortality, protecting him from unexpected death. It allowed him to regress through time and abuse this cheat-like ability. And it also made it so that the world isn't constantly reset without his knowledge while Subaru keeps doing his thing and potentially even exploiting him.

It would be annoying that he might suddenly be sent back in time when Subaru randomly dies by tripping himself and bashes his head against the ground, but it was better to be in the loops than outside of them.

'And all this means that I can't just do my thing and will need to be entangled in Subaru's mess… And that's even what the system wants from me.'

It felt troublesome to deal with Subaru's problems, but Roy immediately shook his head.

Since he was connected to Subaru and benefited from Return by Death, at least keeping an eye on him was something that he needed to do in order to stay in control of the situation and his new life.

Simply locking Subaru up somewhere was not an option, for many reasons.

In addition, following events of the plot while making use of his knowledge was also the most beneficial for him and offered many opportunities, being much better than simply stumbling about in that new world while knowing nothing and no-one.

'Anyway, a Re:Zero world, huh?' Roy thought to himself.

Normally transmigrating to Re:Zero in his eyes would rather suck. The power levels here are all over the place, human lifespan is the same as in the real world and most importantly the prospects of becoming strong and Immortal as a transmigrator were very low.

But since he had a power system and Return by Death, it was not too bad!

In fact, there was no reason to complain, since he had these things.

It was great!

Roy squeezed his fists with a smile. 'Right! Transmigrating here is my greatest opportunity. I even got a great body and a system! Regardless of what the limitations or desires of the system are, I need to make the best of this chance!'

He had to do his very best. Since here he had a chance of becoming a supreme existence and achieving Immortality!

His crimson eyes glazed over with determination, Roy closed the message while looking at Subaru who talked with a muscular merchant selling apples and other fruits at his stall.

His expression returned to a focused one.

'Hmm, Mr. Save Point guy?'

At that moment, a new notification appeared.

[System notification.]

[All messages had been read.]

[<Status Window>, <Servant Lists> and <Quest Lists> are unlocked.]

[Good Luck!]

Thinking of what it might be about, once the notification faded, Roy concentrated and opened the <Status Window>, all while Subaru was suddenly shouted at and chased away from the stall.

Roy faintly smirked when he heard the man yelling at Subaru to not interfere in his business.

As Subaru resumed his pilgrimage, Roy focused on his Status Window.

At that time he simply saw his status that displayed his Main Integrated Heroic Spirit, his statistics and abilities, all of which simply consisted of 10% of Mordred's stats. However, it also listed and briefly explained the <Blessing of Satella>.

Following that, Roy briefly checked the <Servant List>, which only included Saber Mordred, containing the same info that he had already seen, and then he finally opened the <Quest Log>.

Going into Quest Log and selecting the Campaign Mission, he found a little more information at the bottom.

[Campaign Mission: A Tumultuous First Day <Arc 1>]

[Goal: Ensure Emilia's safety.]

[Reward: 5-10 System Points. 1 Summoning Card.]

[Note: Your reward will be calculated depending on your performance and how much you benefited during the Arc. A bonus reward could be given after the player exceeds the system's expectations.]

'My performance and benefits? In other words… If I did absolutely nothing, stayed on the sidelines, and Subaru saved Emilia himself, then I would probably only get 5 System Points, but if I contributed, then it might be 7 or 8. In that case, what should I do to receive 10 points and a bonus reward? Beat Elsa?'

Roy thought of this and frowned.

Wasn't this just way too difficult?

If he can only bring out 10% of Mordred's power, then beating Elsa by himself really seemed way too difficult.

Could he beat her this bit of Saber's strength when even Emilia and Puck were sort-of unable to do that?

In the end, it was only Reinhard, the strongest man in the world, who managed to chase away Elsa, who in turn continued fighting him until she was thoroughly defeated. And even when she was defeated, she still made one final assassination attempt on Emilia before finally fleeing for good.

She was certainly very tough, persistent and difficult to deal with.

Elsa was simply not a type of boss that was meant to be defeated on the first day!

'Damn, this is hard. Is this even possible?'

Roy wrinkled his eyebrows as he lacked confidence.

Perhaps it wasn't impossible to chase away Elsa after a near-infinite amount of tries. And that's what would really count as 'exceeding the system's expectations'.

But still, it would really be incredibly troublesome.

Nonetheless, Roy still wanted to complete the mission with the highest score and receive the highest grade reward.

'So, how do I go about it?'
