Chapitre 4: The Mystery Unfolds

The next morning, Lilith and Elara woke up to the soft chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves. The first light of dawn filtered through the canopy above, casting a serene glow over Verdant Hollow. They quickly got ready and made their way to seek out the village elder, Grimald.

Grimald was already up and about, directing the morning activities and overseeing the village's daily routines. He greeted Lilith and Elara with a warm smile as they approached.

"Good morning," Grimald said. "I trust you slept well?"

"Very well, thank you," Elara replied. "We wanted to ask you more about the direwolf attacks. When did they start?"

Grimald's expression grew serious. "Come, let's sit and talk."

They followed him to a shaded area with wooden benches and sat down. Grimald took a deep breath before he began.

"The direwolf attacks started a few weeks ago," Grimald said. "At first, it was just isolated incidents—one or two wolves appearing at the outskirts of the village. But then, they became more frequent and aggressive."

Lilith and Elara exchanged a glance, their minds working to piece together the timeline.

"A few weeks ago?" Lilith asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "Do you remember anything unusual happening around that time?"

Grimald thought for a moment. "There were strange disturbances in the forest. Animals acting erratically, the usual calm of the woods disrupted. It felt like something had shifted in the balance of nature."

Elara nodded, her suspicions growing. "Did anything specific happen, like a powerful magical event or an unusual occurrence?"

Grimald sighed. "Now that you mention it, there was a night when the air was filled with a strange energy. It was as if the very essence of the forest was pulsing with life and power. It's hard to describe, but it was around that time that the direwolf attacks began."

Lilith and Elara shared a knowing look. They understood that this was likely connected to Lilith's awakening as the new Demon Lord, but they kept that information to themselves for now.

"Thank you for telling us this," Elara said. "We need to understand more about these disturbances and what might be causing them."

Grimald nodded. "If there's anything else you need, please don't hesitate to ask. Our village is grateful for your help."

They spent the rest of the day speaking with various inhabitants of Verdant Hollow, gathering stories and observations. Each tale added a piece to the puzzle, but the picture was still incomplete.

Their first stop was the market, where a shopkeeper named Liora, a spry elf with kind eyes, tended to her stall filled with herbs and potions. Elara and Lilith approached her, hoping to glean more information.

"Good day, Liora," Elara greeted. "We've heard about the disturbances in the forest and the direwolf attacks. Have you noticed anything unusual?"

Liora nodded, her expression grave. "Yes, the forest has been restless. Even the plants seem affected. Some of my usual herbs are not growing as they should, and the potency of my potions has been unpredictable. It's as if the natural balance is out of sync."

"Have you heard any specific reports about the direwolves?" Lilith asked.

Liora sighed. "The hunters have seen them near the old creek in the deep forest. They say the wolves are not just aggressive; they're desperate, as if something is driving them from their territory."

Armed with this information, they decided to seek out one of the hunters. As they walked near the edge of the village, they noticed a towering troll with a gentle demeanor, sharpening his hunting spear with focused precision.

Elara approached him respectfully. "Excuse me, are you one of the hunters? We've been hearing about the direwolves and other disturbances. Can you tell us more about what you've seen?"

The troll looked up, his expression serious yet kind. "I am Seslis," he introduced himself. "The direwolves are coming from their territory near the old creek. It used to be a place they never left, rich with prey and water. But something's changed. The creek has dried up, and the prey has scattered. The wolves are starving and desperate."

"Do you know what might have caused this?" Lilith asked, her curiosity piqued.

Seslis shook his head. "No one knows for sure. Some say it's a curse, others think it's the work of a powerful being. Whatever it is, it's affecting more than just the wolves. The entire forest is uneasy."

With each conversation, Lilith and Elara pieced together more of the puzzle. The disturbances seemed to coincide with Lilith's awakening, but the exact cause remained elusive. They knew they had to investigate the old creek and the direwolf territory to find more answers.

As night fell, Lilith and Elara returned to their quarters, their minds full of new questions and theories. They knew their journey was just beginning, and the answers they sought would not come easily. But they were determined to uncover the truth and restore harmony to the land.

as they lay on their beds Elara whispered, "don't worry Lilith, even if it have something to do with you. we will find away."

Elara reached out and gently squeezed Lilith's hand. "We will. Together."

With those thoughts, they drifted into sleep.

Armed with the information from Seslis, Lilith and Elara ventured into the forest the following day, determined to uncover the truth behind the disturbances in the direwolf territory and the tainted creek. The early morning light filtered through the dense canopy above, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor as they made their way deeper into the woods.

As they approached the creek, the air grew heavier, thick with a sense of unease. It wasn't long before they stumbled upon a dire sight: a mother direwolf, weak and barely able to move, surrounded by her three pups who whimpered softly. Nearby, an alpha direwolf watched over them with fierce protectiveness, his eyes glowing with suspicion and aggression.

"We need to help them," Lilith whispered, her heart aching at the sight of the suffering direwolves.

Elara nodded solemnly. "Be cautious, Lilith. The alpha won't allow us near easily."

Moving slowly to avoid startling the alpha, they edged closer. The alpha direwolf growled a warning and charged at them. Elara swiftly stepped forward, her sword drawn, ready to defend against the attack. The skirmish was intense but brief. Elara managed to incapacitate the alpha direwolf without causing permanent harm, allowing him to fall into a deep slumber.

With the immediate danger subdued, they cautiously approached the mother direwolf. Lilith knelt beside her, noting the labored breathing and the faint, sickly glow emanating from her body.

"Elara, look," Lilith said, pointing to the mother direwolf's side. "There's something wrong with her mana."

Elara examined the direwolf closely. "This isn't a normal poison. It's mana poisoning. It must have happened when you came into the world, Lilith. The mother direwolf gave birth to her pups that same day, and they were exposed to a surge of mana."

Lilith's eyes widened in realization. "So, it's my fault they're suffering."

Elara placed a reassuring hand on Lilith's shoulder. "No, Lilith. It's not your fault. But you possess the power to help them now. No potion can counteract this type of poison. You must use your magic."

Taking a deep breath, Lilith focused her energy on the ailing direwolves. She gently placed her hands on the mother direwolf, feeling the pulse of her mana flowing into the animal. Concentrating deeply, she channeled her magic to cleanse the poison from their bodies. A soft, golden aura enveloped the direwolves, and gradually, the mother direwolf's breathing steadied. The pups stirred, their whimpers turning into relieved yips as they regained strength.

"They'll be okay now," Lilith said softly, a mix of relief and exhaustion in her voice.

Elara smiled warmly. "You did it, Lilith. You saved them."

The alpha direwolf began to stir, awakening from his slumber. Confusion clouded his eyes momentarily, but it softened as he realized his family was safe. He offered a respectful nod to Lilith and Elara, acknowledging their aid.

Standing together, Lilith and Elara surveyed the creek. The water, once clear and lively, now lay stagnant, tainted with an unnatural glow. It was evident that the mana poisoning had affected more than just the direwolves.

"We must find the source of this contamination," Elara declared, determination ringing in her voice. "If it's affecting the creek and the creatures here, it could spread further."

Lilith nodded in agreement, her resolve firm. "Let's follow the creek upstream. Perhaps we can trace where this mana surge originated."

With the direwolves now stable, Lilith and Elara continued their journey, following the murmuring creek deeper into the heart of the forest. They knew that uncovering the origin of the contamination was vital, not only for the direwolves but for the entire ecosystem.
