Chapitre 29: Re-enter the Game:Village Carnival 4

As a new player entering the game for the second time, you should listen to the old players' conversations whenever you're not hiding.

Remembering the safe distance tested before the end of the last game, Wen Nannan patted the dirt off her hands and walked towards the top of the mountain.

She didn't know how long she'd been walking uphill, but her legs were so sore she could barely move anymore when she finally touched the invisible wall.

Wen Nannan's eyes flickered, and she tried to take note of her surroundings.

The sun was already setting, and Wen Nannan was breathless from exhaustion, yet she still had to be careful on the steep mountain path.

Despite being extra careful, she slipped and rolled off the curb into a cave.

After a dizzying spin, Wen Nannan struggled to get up from the ground. Her legs and arms were stinging, and she knew without looking that she had been scraped by rocks and was bleeding.

It was completely dark, and there was no light around. Wen Nannan felt her way around the cave and then laughed.

The cave was a good place. Because of its location deep in the mountains, the temperature inside wasn't as stuffy as in the town.

It was also very hidden, a perfect spot.

Wen Nannan, gritting her teeth against the pain, memorized the location of the cave, and then limped back down the mountain.

If things really got bad in the later stages of the game, she would need a safe place to hide.

Over the next few days, Wen Nannan consciously hoarded food.

There was plenty of wild game in the mountains, and the trees were covered in fruit. Wen Nannan didn't discriminate, she basically put anything she saw into her space.

But after several days, she still hadn't found a sufficient water source – enough to last her for the remaining twenty or so days of the game.

There was a public well in the center of Fuguo Town, and Wen Nannan originally wanted to collect water there.

However, judging from the way those few players were so eager for supplies a few days ago, Wen Nannan decided to play it safe and avoid revealing her identity. She would go up the mountain to find a new water source.

As it turned out, there were many people who shared her desire to stay hidden. Wen Nannan found many scattered footprints by a small stream.

Judging from the depth and size of the footprints, more than one person had been there to collect water. The top layer of soil on the footprints was still damp.

Someone has been here recently.

Seeing this, Wen Nannan focused her attention. Her white, slender fingers dipped into the stream, and at the same time, a steady stream of water began to flow from the bottom of the stream into another space where time was frozen.

Only after filling two spaces did Wen Nannan leave with satisfaction.

After several days of busily gathering supplies, Wen Nannan looked at her space, filled with food, and finally felt a sense of calm. She decided to have a good sleep tonight.

But the next day, Wen Nannan was woken up by Aunt Zhang and Auntie Li.

"Nannan, Nannan, get up quickly, the rice is infested with insects!"

"Nannan! Are you home?"

The sharp voice mingled with the sound of banging on the door. Wen Nannan, who was sleeping soundly, suddenly had a change of scenery in her dream. It became a scene of someone chasing after her with a knife, and she was startled awake.

Fuguo town was experiencing a plague of insects.

This hadn't happened in decades. The town leader, stroking his graying beard, looked worried, his face etched with wrinkles.

"It was supposed to be a bumper harvest today, but it seems fate doesn't favor us."

After a pause, he sighed, looking ten years older.

All the people in town gathered around the rice field, lamenting the situation.

Wen Nannan frowned, not understanding what was so big a deal about some insects in the rice field. Spray some insecticide, or even manually remove them. Both ways are more effective than just standing around.

But when she squeezed her way to the front of the crowd, she was stunned.

This wasn't just some insects in the rice; this was a damn insect pile with some rice growing in it.

Fields of golden waves were replaced by a sea of black. Only the occasional green leaf of a rice plant could be seen.

Up close, there were dozens or even hundreds of insects crowded on a single rice plant. Those that couldn't fit on top were clinging to their companions, layer upon layer, wriggling.

Occasionally, some that couldn't get a foothold fell to the ground, making a buzzing sound.

The locusts perched on the rice stalks ate quickly, and the ones above them... were actually eating their companions who were already eating.

This paddy field was beyond saving.

Not just her, but others had the same thought.

Auntie Li and Aunt Zhang, who had informed Wen Nannan, squeezed their way through the crowd. They saw the scene, and Auntie Li's legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground.

But as if she didn't feel the pain, she cried out loudly.

"How can this be, there weren't so many insects when we left just now, they doubled in the blink of an eye!"

Doubled?

That was no small number. If the number of locusts had always been this high, it wouldn't be a big deal. But if they had suddenly multiplied this much, wouldn't their numbers continue to increase?

Wen Nannan lowered her eyelids and was about to ask about the specific situation in private when a female teacher who had come to the village asked a question first.

"Did these locusts double in number simply because they multiplied within the rice fields? What a disgusting place this village is."

It was Xu Fang. As she questioned the villagers, she had a look of disdain on her face. If she didn't need information from the NPCs, she would have ignored them.

Auntie Li could clearly see Xu Fang's contempt. She spat loudly, stood up and distanced herself from Xu Fang.

"What's wrong with the village? You think you're better than us just because you come from the city? Don't think you're so special."

"Old woman, what are you talking about?"

Xu Fang's brow furrowed. She had a bad temper too, and she retorted.

The two of them started arguing, and somehow, it turned into shoving, and finally into a fight. Town residents and players who originally wanted to stop the fighting also fell into the brawl.
