Chapitre 2: Chapter Two

Suzy blinked, her vision blurry. Is she dead? That was the first thought that hammered into her mind as she cracked open her eyes. Instead of cold, damp darkness, she was met with a sight that stole her breath away.

She lay draped in luxurious silk sheets, the kind that felt impossibly soft against her skin. White curtains, embroidered with flowers in vibrant hues, diffused the morning sunlight that streamed through the window. Ornate tapestries adorned the walls, depicting scenes of mythical creatures and fantastical landscapes. This wasn't a hospital room, that much was certain.

Panic clawed at her throat. Where was she? The last thing she remembered was the chilling darkness of the well, the suffocating feeling of falling. How did she get here?

Just then, the chamber door creaked open, and a young woman, no older than sixteen, rushed in. Her ebony hair was pulled back in a neat braid, and her eyes widened in surprise when they landed on Suzy.

"You are finally awake, Lady Cassandra!" the young woman exclaimed, relief flooding her features. "I thought you wouldn't survive!" Her voice, high-pitched and laced with concern, echoed in the vast chamber.

Suzy stared at her, completely bewildered. Lady Cassandra? What was she talking about? "Wh-where am I?" Suzy stammered, her voice hoarse.

The young woman's brow furrowed in confusion. "But Lady Cassandra, this is your room" she explained, gesturing towards the lavish surroundings. "Have you forgotten?"

Suzy's mouth hung open. "Lady Cassandra?" she repeated, the name sounding foreign on her tongue. "Who the heck is Lady Cassandra?"

The young woman's eyes widened further, a flicker of alarm replacing the relief that had washed over her moments ago. "Heck?" she echoed, tilting her head in confusion. Clearly, the word wasn't part of her vocabulary.

"Uh, never mind," Suzy mumbled, realizing her outburst might seem strange. Taking a deep breath, she tried again. "Listen, I don't know who Cassandra is, and I definitely don't remember being in a luxurious house."

The young woman's brow furrowed in concern. "But Lady Cassandra... you fell unconscious yesterday. We thought..." Her voice trailed off, and she bit her lower lip nervously.

Suzy's heart hammered in her chest. Fell unconscious? "What do you mean I fell unconscious?" she pressed, a sliver of fear creeping into her voice. "The last thing I remember..." Her voice trailed off as the memory of the well, the darkness, the feeling of falling, came rushing back.

"The well!" she exclaimed, the horrifying realization dawning on her. "I fell down a well! How am I here?"

The young woman's eyes widened in understanding. "Oh, the well incident! Everyone was worried sick. The doctor said you hit your head and might not remember everything." Relief flooded back into her voice. "But you're awake now, that's the important thing!"

Suzy stared at her, mind reeling. This couldn't be happening. She'd fallen down a well, and now she was in a luxurious house, impersonating some noblewoman named Cassandra? This had to be a dream, a very elaborate and unsettling dream.

"Can you please tell me what happened?" Suzy pleaded, needing some semblance of explanation. "Who are you? Where exactly am I?"

The young woman curtseyed, a small smile gracing her lips. "I apologize for not introducing myself properly. I am Doris, your handmaiden, I've been with you since we were little, Lady Cassandra." She gestured towards the lavish surroundings. "And this is your chamber, in the house of Count Edmund in the kingdom of Ather."

Suzy processed this new information, each word adding another layer of confusion. Count? Ather? These were things out of history books, not her reality. "Count Edmund?" she squeaked, needing confirmation.

Doris nodded eagerly. "Yes, Lady Cassandra. You are the second daughter of the esteemed Count Edmund." She noticed the growing panic in Suzy's eyes and added soothingly, "Don't worry, the doctor said it's normal to be forgetful after such a fall. Your memories will come back slowly."

Suzy wasn't so sure about that. Her memories were clear – the well, the birthday celebration, her life as a real estate agent in a bustling city. This opulent chamber, this talk of Counts and palaces, felt like a scene from a movie, not her reality.

Suddenly, a wave of dizziness washed over her, and she clutched her head. The room spun, the vibrant colors blurring into a dizzying display. "I... I need some air," she mumbled, pushing herself up against the headboard.

Doris rushed to her side, her face etched with concern. "Easy, Lady Cassandra. Let me help you." She gently assisted Suzy back onto the pillows. "Perhaps some water would help?"

Suzy nodded weakly, grateful for the young woman's kindness. Even if she wasn't Cassandra, this Doris seemed genuinely worried about her. As Doris helped her sit up and sipped some cool water, Suzy decided to play along for now. There had to be a logical explanation for all of this, and maybe Doris could provide some answers.

"So, tell me about this Count Edmund," Suzy said cautiously. "Is he... my father?"

Doris smile faltered slightly. "Yes, Lady Cassandra. He is a very important man, also part of the nobles close to the King himself." She hesitated for a moment, then continued in a hushed tone, "But things haven't been easy for you lately, have they?"

Suzy frowned. "What do you mean?" She had no idea what this Cassandra person's life was like, but clearly, something wasn't right.

Doris bit her lip, her gaze flickering around the room as if searching for the right words. "Well, there's been... sadness, Lady Cassandra. A broken heart, some might say."

Suzy's confusion deepened. Broken heart? This was getting more bizarre by the minute."
