Chapitre 5: Chapter 5: Bloody Ceremony

Time quickly flew by as many kids have been tested for their aptitude.

Luck had been shocked by how many children were passing out. The frail looking ones suffered terrible injuries with few of them as exceptions.

As for everyone who looked healthy, they seemed to be only passing out with minimal injuries.

Soon, there were only a dozen or so children left.

As Lord Thel asked for the next one to come up, Luck decided to go next. He could now vaguely guess what the aptitude ceremony was from his observations.

'The first test seems to be measuring someone's life essence. I'm guessing that's the overall condition of someone.' Luck pondered. He noticed how all the healthy looking kids were given the best results while the frail kids were much worse.

Luck observed how, so far, there were only three colours the altar could light up to being; red, yellow and green. And if the life essence was really weak, the altar wouldn't even glow at all. Most kids had red or no change in colour, and the talented ones had yellow.

As for the five strongest kids in The Sanctuary, they had made the runes light up in green.

As for the second test, he still didn't have a clue as to what it was. He just knew that the strange energy that the man was injecting would cause a negative reaction to the body that could vary.

The worst outcome would be blood coming out of your orifices before losing consciousness. The best outcome is nothing happening at all.

Apart from Faylen that had no negative reactions to the energy, most of the children had simply passed out with a nosebleed.

As Luck stood before the cloaked man, he extended his left hand to him. He hoped the man doesn't find anything strange with his body.

Feeling a prick on his index finger, a droplet of blood fell on the altar.

Luck waited for a few seconds, expecting something to happen, but there was no change.

After a few more seconds had past, Luck had suddenly witnessed the altar do...

Completely nothing!

'I feared my Alpha Cells would have caused the runes to glow in a green light, or perhaps even cause a problem to it. But no reaction whatsoever?' Luck contemplated.

He thought life essence had something to do with an individual's vitality and how healthy he was, but it seems he was wrong. If that had been the case, his blood would have caused the altar to react quite greatly.

Luck observed Lord Thel's expression and noticed how he didn't seem to have noticed any anomalies. After all the tests previously, he became less annoyed with bad results so his face didn't outwardly show any dissatisfaction towards Luck.

Lord Thel simply moved onto the aptitude test, not expecting much.

"Close your eyes." He instructed.

Closing his eyes, Luck suddenly felt something press onto his forehead before he quickly lost touch with his physical body.

Luck felt like he was floating in the abyss.

It was similar to his experiences in outer space. The only difference was how there was absolutely nothing.

No light, no stars, just darkness.

After some time, he had expected those black stars to appear like how it was described by the children who had an aptitude, however, nothing seemed to be happening.

'This is strange.'

Luck was perplexed.

As Luck patiently waited, he slowly began feeling his senses returning to him.

He guessed that the man had removed his hand from him, pulling him out of the dark world.

To Luck's surprise, he immediately felt that his body was in extreme discomfort.

With his returning senses, he felt like his body was on fire like he had been dropped on the scorching sun!

Luck tried to open his burning eyes to see what was happening to him, but it was extremely blurry.

It felt as if he was crying as liquid kept flowing out of his eyes.

From the metallic stench, Luck knew that these weren't tears, it was blood!

'Painful! Is this the negative reaction towards the strange energy?'

Luck tightly clenched his fist — the pain was excruciating. It felt as if something was rampaging in his body.

"Hm, passable. It seems you have a small aptitude towards magic." Lord Thel spoke with a hint of surprise.

He was casting a spell on the children, supplying the spell with only the smallest amount of mana to not instantly kill them.

The children that remained conscious after being exposed to his mana were the ones with an aptitude towards magic.

The people with a decent amount of life essence suffered fewer injuries, passing out if they didn't have an aptitude. As for the ones that remain conscious, their aptitude is measured by their compatibility with his mana.

If they had a high compatibility with his mana like Faylen, they would feel extremely comfortable and see plenty of dark elemental particles. However, if someone only had an aptitude towards magic and a small affinity for darkness, they would see fewer dark elemental particles — suffering a backlash due to their innate resistance towards foreign energy.

A small nosebleed while remaining conscious would be the best outcome for someone who doesn't have an aptitude towards dark mana. It means their talent in magic is high enough so their mana resistance is much more effective.

Unbeknownst to both Luck and the cloaked man, Luck saw no dark elemental particles. He didn't even have an aptitude towards magic. His body had somehow resisted the strange energy, leading him to profusely bleed out of his orifices and remain conscious.

Luck couldn't understand what the man was saying to him as his ears also seemed to be bleeding while his head was ringing incessantly.

Suddenly, Luck felt the cloaked man feed him a potion. The liquid flowing down his body felt cold as the burning feeling around his body slowly dissipated.

Still, in a somewhat dazed state, Luck spent a few moments adjusting to the wave of dizziness.

Wiping the lingering blood on his face, Luck was finally able to see his surroundings clearly. He noticed all the children around him had a horrified expression — probably due to how much blood was coming out of his body.

"Well done child, it seems you have an aptitude towards magic." Lord Thel spoke before continuing, "I have given you a potion that will slowly heal you, so get plenty of rest."

Luck could vaguely understand what the man was trying to tell him due to his injuries healing, so he gave a small nod.

With the potion and his Alpha Cells, the pain quickly disappeared, leaving only lingering blood on his body.

Fortunately, the man hadn't noticed anything strange with his body. Lord Thel simply thought the potion had swiftly caused the boy to stop bleeding.

Luck was surprised that the cloaked man had healed his injuries. The man seemed to have a complete change in attitude towards him. There were a few other children who had suffered a similar situation to Luck, even passing out, but Lord Thel simply watched with indifference.

'Is the value of someone with an aptitude towards magic greater than someone with a high life essence?'

Luck had a terrible life essence evident in the reaction on the altar, however, he had remained conscious on the second test. He guessed that this conclusion was likely true as the care Lord Thel showed towards him was worlds apart compared to the children who made the altar light up.

Looking down, Luck was immediately shocked. He noticed how his rags were completely drenched in his blood.

'Dangerous...' Luck sharply let out a breath. He became even more cautious towards the cloaked man and the strange magic of this world.

'But... The man said I had an aptitude towards magic. Unlike all the children who had an aptitude, they saw black stars. In that dark world, I didn't see any stars, so I may not have an aptitude towards magic...' Luck wore a thoughtful expression.

'Yet, I had remained conscious. Could it be possible that I don't have an affinity, however, my Alpha Cells can detect strange energies and react to it?'

Luck knew that if this crazy idea was true, his life in this world would definitely be more interesting. It meant his Alpha Cells had the capability of interacting with the supernatural.

'Perhaps... perhaps these Alpha Cells were the true reason for my transmigration...'

Luck wondered what the origins of that organism he fused with was. To have such abilities...

Luck knew that outer space held countless mysteries. He had always believed that humans weren't the only ones to exist throughout the universe.

He couldn't help but think that the world he was in was just in a different part of the universe.

Burying his complex thoughts, he waited till the aptitude ceremony ended.

After half an hour, the aptitude ceremony had concluded.

Of the children, only 7 had an aptitude, causing the cloaked man to have an extremely pleased expression.

This was the most he'd ever had!

...

Luck was currently within his cave, reevaluating the old book. After his recent experiences, he looked at this world much more differently.

'Now that I realised that this world is much more mysterious than I had initially thought, could this book actually contain secrets to superhuman strength?' Luck casually thought as he flipped through the pages.

Carefully reading through the entire book this time, Luck suddenly had a stroke of enlightenment.

"I see! So this was life essence, it all makes sense!" Luck exclaimed.

The breathing rotations within the book are a way for someone to channel their life essence.

Using this mysterious energy, you can enhance your physical strength, endurance and agility.

'No wonder I felt that the attack was missing something. Furthermore, the difference between me and that boy now makes sense! He was faster and stronger as he could channel his life essence!'

'There's more to this book that meets the eye. There are many techniques that you can master, but the book explains that this way of learning isn't wise. This book primarily functions as a way to train your body whilst combat is secondary.' Luck analysed.

'So the cloaked man is trying to raise future warriors for war? Why else would he train all these orphans?'

Glancing around the cave he's living in, Luck noticed the patches of moss on the corners and walls of his room.

Luck mumbled, "This cave is definitely man-made. And the moss that grows here indicates that it has been a while since this room was created.

"Perhaps half a decade? No, at least 15 years..."

Estimating how old The Sanctuary is, Luck had a strange expression. If this place was truly this old, perhaps there would have been other people that had lived here.

Remembering the crossed-out writing above his name at the entrance of his cave, Luck began feeling that this idea was likely true.

'If the cloak man is truly raising warriors, why would he do it in secret?'

All the children were underground — a vast underground space with numerous areas used for training and fighting. Such a big place was quite hard to believe for a single person to build. However, now that magic was involved, it became more believable.

Normally, when training a large group of people in secret, it requires immense resources. In the medieval era, this would be quite a difficult task.

Judging from the poor quality and quantity of food, Luck guessed the cloaked man didn't have any strong backing — only focusing on the children that looked promising.

He guessed he was doing everything by himself. At most, a few other people would be working with him.

Luck racked his brain.

'What is his goal? Is there a deeper plot that I don't understand?'
