Chapitre 53: This Doesn't Change Anything

Alicia shook her head and said, "I'll take care of all that."

Dominic chuckled from the other side of the room upon hearing this. As someone who knew Madison Clark perfectly, he knew she was a natural survivor when it came to her family. This might not be evident in their early journeys in this world, but if she was motivated, the results would be satisfactory.

But the problem Dominic faced was the same as always: the people who would be great ten years from now don't exist yet. Madison, Alicia, or Nick were inexperienced civilians, and that was honestly a bad thing.

The experiences of this family weren't entirely improving their perception of the world, but at least later on, he hoped to achieve something with them and make them better in the not-so-distant future. Besides going against the clock, he hoped that the aerial attacks on Los Angeles wouldn't happen.

But all that was asking for too much. Dominic had come farther than he ever imagined, so as long as he could continue on this path, it was okay.

For the first time, he could have control over the game of walkers and people he once thought were fictional.

Yes, Dominic was quite ambitious, and if he could do everything Emma asked of him to survive, then he would. When he dies, maybe all of this will be completely forgotten in no time. That's why how he felt now didn't matter; what mattered was survival.

"What I'm planning now is to take control of the base. I have the opportunity to have more than half of the most important soldiers under control. The rest will be persuaded, and I'll do my best to save their families like the others." Dominic had confided in Alicia after she had coincidentally overheard the conversation a few days ago.

Alicia looked at Dominic and asked, "Why do you bother so much about that?"

"You know why I do it. If I hadn't interfered, all the soldiers would have left this place with the resources, leaving us to fend for ourselves." Dominic set aside his coffee cup and said, "I need the soldiers to protect our interests and plans in the future; we need them."

Alicia knew perfectly well what kind of person Dominic was, and she didn't dislike him. It was precisely because of him that she could end Matt and erase all longing. That's why she understood that a man like Dominic was necessary to survive, regardless of what anyone else would do before people turned into the undead.

"Do you have contingency plans if everything goes wrong?"

"I do. I also have a safe place you can go if things here get disrupted for some unknown reason." Dominic pointed to some coordinates and handed them to Alicia, who was surprised by this.

For Dominic, this was more of a necessity. He was in a world that used to be fictional, and in this one, there is a development process that must be taken seriously. Processes are history, and in them are events; if any of these don't occur for some unknown reason, future events will be altered.

Taking all this into account, Dominic, by the string theory, understands that this might never happen or that everything will happen in one way or another. Certainly, the second option would suck, but the first would let Dominic rest easy.

"When I come back, we can talk more in depth about the virus. At least you should be ready to deal with them." Dominic said as he prepared to leave.

Alicia remained silent; she didn't know if she still had the strength to kill walkers. But knowing that Dominic did it, she thought it wouldn't be so complicated.

...

A few hours later, outside the community,.

"There are reports that the bases around the most inhabited cities have been evacuated, and others have been invaded by the virus, so they will soon give us orders to evacuate."

"Damn it, how do they expect us to abandon all those people?"

"Don't get me wrong, but most of the people we take care of don't deserve to be taken care of. All they do is believe it's our obligation to take care of them forever; they think they should be protected at the cost of our lives while they do nothing but criticize us."

"I agree with you on that, Diaz, but we must not forget that we are soldiers."

Dominic listened to all the comments from the soldiers around him and silently pondered the problems with people. Not everyone is fit to survive, and the complaints these soldiers had about the people they protected were that they did nothing; they simply ate and lived their normal lives with their families while they suffered killing walkers.

The psychological damage that soldiers were suffering from being in a war zone within their homes was something that couldn't be accepted overnight. Soldiers in war stay sane because they know that the war isn't in their country and their relatives are fine, but what happens when the war is in their country?

Everyone fears losing their loved ones, dying, or being bitten. No one wanted to become a walker, and that was something everyone was very clear about, but this was a process everyone had to go through.

The dead come back to life; Dominic knew that whether by natural death or not, everyone would turn into walkers.

"Just hold on a little longer; when we move to that island, productive people will be worthy of protection, and those who aren't won't need to die for them." Dominic said as his gaze fell on Diaz, Cole, and Sergeant Castro, who were the ones with the highest rank outside his circle.

"What about food?"

Dominic frowned and said, "I can bring supplies when I deem it necessary, but we won't stay here; we'll go to the coasts. The main shelter is secured; we'll pass by there when the time comes, and you'll be able to see your families. But the most important thing at that moment will be taking the coastal forces."

Everyone knew Dominic's plan; certainly, that island was the best idea they could have for their families. If they manage to establish themselves on that island and create a base, then there would be nothing more to worry about. The safety of their families would be ensured.
