Chapitre 58: 058 Uninvited guest

Sister Xu's thin body was covered by a white sheet by the nurses. Seeing her mother about to be carried onto a stretcher and sent to the morgue, Xu Qianqian was overcome with grief and fainted.

Two nurses busily revived Xu Qianqian and gave her a sedative. Soon, she fell asleep.

Zhang Wei couldn't bear to see Xu Qianqian's heartbreak when she woke up. He quietly left the ICU, closed the door, and leaned against the hallway wall. From his pocket, he took out a cigarette box, lit a cigarette, and smoked.

As the smoke curled around him, his gaze became empty and distant. No one could tell what he was thinking or how deeply sad he felt.

Zhang Wei felt deep guilt. If only he had acted a few seconds earlier, everything might have been different. He believed he could have prevented this tragedy, but he didn't.

Xu Xiaowei sat on a chair across the hallway, quietly watching Zhang Wei with slightly furrowed brows and a vacant look. In her memory, this rogue neighbor had never shown such an expression. He had always been lazy and careless, giving the impression of a small-time hooligan. But now, she saw a completely different Zhang Wei. His empty gaze made her realize that she didn't understand this neighbor at all, and she couldn't fathom his inner world.

Xu Xiaowei sighed softly. From Zhang Wei's behavior at the scene of the violence and his expression during Sister Xu's final moments, she saw that he had a humane side beyond his violent tendencies.

But unfortunately, he had committed serious crimes: resisting arrest, assault, causing at least eight people to be disabled, and seriously injuring several others. He was also facing a lawsuit from her prospective boyfriend for car robbery. Any one of these charges could land him in prison for decades.

Sighing again, Xu Xiaowei thought that if he surrendered, maybe the judge would be lenient. Though Zhang Wei hadn't formally turned himself in, she felt a twinge of pity for him.

Quickly, Xu Xiaowei sent a text message to her colleague, informing them that she was with the suspect on the fifth floor.

Zhang Wei saw her discreet actions but didn't react. He knew that running wasn't the solution; he had to face the consequences of his actions.

Outside the hospital building, there was a commotion. The noise grew louder, mixed with police sirens and the sound of cars continuously arriving. The previously quiet hospital became even noisier.

Zhang Wei and Xu Xiaowei heard the sounds. They exchanged glances. Zhang Wei remained expressionless, while Xu Xiaowei sighed again.

"Zhang Wei, surrender... come back to the police station with me," Xu Xiaowei stood up.

A bitter smile appeared on Zhang Wei's lips. Surrendering seemed like the only option. But who would take care of Xu Qianqian if he went to prison? Thinking of the heartbroken, orphaned Xu Qianqian, Zhang Wei felt a pang of sorrow.

Maybe the "tigress" could take on the responsibility of caring for Xu Qianqian... Zhang Wei pictured that beautiful face in his mind. Thinking of the tigress made him feel better. Entrusting Xu Qianqian to her, she would surely take good care of her. With no more worries, Zhang Wei composed himself and said softly, "Okay, Xu, I'll surrender. I'll go with you..."

Seeing Zhang Wei cooperate, Xu Xiaowei's beautiful eyes showed a hint of relief.

At that moment, the elevator at the end of the hallway opened, and several uniformed officers stepped out. Simultaneously, the sound of footsteps echoed from the stairs. As the officers from the elevator approached Xu Xiaowei and Zhang Wei, over ten more uniformed officers appeared around the corner of the hallway.

The group, initially rushing, slowed their pace as they neared. Though they had never seen Zhang Wei, they recognized him from witness descriptions. Some of them instinctively reached for their guns, forming a semicircle around Zhang Wei.

These officers were clearly cautious. Despite being told the suspect had surrendered, the sight of the carnage he had caused made them wary. No one dared to be careless in front of the man who had incapacitated over a dozen people.

Seeing so many officers and their readiness, the nurses and patients' families quickly retreated into their rooms. The braver ones peeked from behind slightly opened doors.

Zhang Wei looked at the officers cautiously surrounding him, still leaning against the wall, unmoving, with an indifferent expression.

Xu Xiaowei saw her subordinates acting like they were facing a formidable enemy. She shook her head slightly, walked quickly to the front of the group, and resumed her usual cold demeanor. "Everyone back off. He's surrendered. Xiao Liu, give me the cuffs." She reached out to the officer at the front.

Xiao Liu, clutching the cuffs tightly, had sweaty palms. Hearing Xu Xiaowei's order, he quickly handed over the shining handcuffs.

Xu Xiaowei took the handcuffs and turned to look at Zhang Wei. At this moment, Zhang Wei slowly extended his hands, his expression calm.

Zhang Wei's cooperation made Xu Xiaowei's heart tremble slightly. For some reason, her beautiful eyes showed a trace of hesitation. It was the first time she didn't want to cuff a criminal suspect.

Just then, footsteps suddenly echoed from the hallway, and three well-dressed men in suits appeared around the corner.

One of the outermost officers stopped the three men, saying in a low voice, "What are you doing? We're on duty; unauthorized personnel are not allowed."

The leading man, around forty years old with a clean-shaven face, took out his credentials and flashed them. Then he quickly said, "Who is the leader here? Please come over."

The officer glanced at the credentials, his eyes showing a hint of surprise. He quickly turned and walked over to Xu Xiaowei, saying, "Captain Xu, someone wants to see you."

Xu Xiaowei was slightly taken aback. She glanced at the three men beyond the police line and then looked at Zhang Wei, hesitating whether to cuff him first.

At that moment, Zhang Wei spoke up, "Xu, go see them first. You have nothing to worry about. With so many of your colleagues here, I can't escape." As he spoke, he glanced at the three men in suits, a faint, bitter smile on his lips.

Xu Xiaowei, seeing that Zhang Wei had guessed her concerns, glared at him in irritation, handed the cuffs back to Xiao Liu, and walked quickly towards the three men.

She exchanged a few words with the three men, and then her voice suddenly rose: "What? The entire city's police force is outside the hospital?"

Turning back, Xu Xiaowei shouted, "Xiao Liu, quick, take a few people downstairs for security. Don't let anyone rush into this building. Hold them off until reinforcements arrive! If anyone tries to force their way in, fire warning shots!"

Xiao Liu responded quickly, gathered several officers, and hurried towards the elevator.
