Chapter 90: The Hidden Sage's Gaze

Bernadette quickly grabbed Alice.

Alice never imagined that introducing the internet to Bernadette would attract the attention of the Hidden Sage.

She was not unfamiliar with those eyes belonging to the Hidden Sage; the last time she saw them was behind Old Neil.

She could hardly control her inner fear. After they held their breath and waited for the Hidden Sage to leave, her legs gave out, and she almost collapsed.

"Sorry," Bernadette apologized after helping Alice stand up again. "I didn't expect this to attract the Hidden Sage's attention."

Alice, still shaken, shook her head and asked, "Why would the Hidden Sage suddenly... suddenly cast its gaze?"

Bernadette looked at Alice with an unclear expression and replied, "Only truly existing, extremely rare, and secret knowledge would attract the Hidden Sage's gaze.

"In other words, what you said is true. A civilization like the one you described, without extraordinary powers, did exist in this world and has long disappeared into the river of history, unknown to anyone."

However, Alice's expression did not reflect the confirmation of her words. Instead, she showed a deeper level of fear than when she first saw the Hidden Sage.

Bernadette heard Alice's incredulous voice, "Did such a civilization, without extraordinary powers, really exist in this world?"

"Were you lying to me earlier?" Bernadette asked, frowning.

"No," Alice closed her eyes and whispered, "We really come from such a civilization, but we all thought that civilization did not exist in this world."

Bernadette was slightly stunned, but Alice continued, "I should have realized it earlier... A year has 12 months and 365 days, a day has 24 hours, there is one sun and one moon in the sky, and this place can also be confirmed as a planet... How could there be so many coincidences in the world?"

Bernadette quietly watched Alice, who was still lost in her thoughts.

The concept of "transmigration" is not unfamiliar to children living in modern society, but if you transmigrate to a world that once had the civilization you remember, it becomes terrifying.

—Are you from that long-lost civilization, or from another world?

For Alice, the most terrifying thing was the last sentence she heard before Shen Yinghuan's death: "Huanhuan, if you transmigrate into the Mysteries, you would be a natural-born monster!"

Did she transmigrate to another world, or was that book actually a prophecy?

This was a suspicion Alice could not verify.

Bernadette seemed to deduce something from Alice's reaction and asked, "Why do you all believe that civilization did not exist in this world?"

Hearing the question, Alice suppressed her complicated emotions and answered in a completely different tone, "Because 'transmigration' is not a foreign concept to us."

"Transmigration?" Bernadette repeated the term, frowning.

Alice organized her thoughts and explained, "Yes... It's a popular literary genre in our time, where the main idea is waking up in a strange new world after death... or maybe transmigrating to the past or future?"

"Your civilization's literature seems to be well-developed?" Bernadette asked tentatively.

"Yes... probably because we have compulsory education?" Alice tilted her head, guessing.

"Compulsory education?" Bernadette asked.

Alice hesitated a bit before explaining, "It means basic education is free of tuition and book fees, including basic literacy, arithmetic, music, art..."

"Wait," Bernadette interrupted, "These are all considered basic education?"

"Yes, and more," Alice nodded, continuing, "There are also physics, chemistry, biology... basically fundamental scientific knowledge, and also politics, history, geography... all part of basic education."

Living in an era where literacy was not free, Bernadette fell into deep thought.

For Alice, spreading compulsory education was a simple statement.

But for Bernadette, it represented a highly affluent civilization—one that had at least solved the problem of feeding its people and achieved a high degree of industrialization, allowing children to study in peace.

The productivity and wealth behind this were unimaginable to Bernadette.

What was even more unimaginable was how such a vast civilization disappeared from history without leaving a trace.

Even the spiritual realm couldn't capture information about that lost civilization...

After thinking for a long time, Bernadette finally said, "If you need help, you can ask."

Alice was silent for a moment before seriously telling Bernadette, "You probably can't help me."

Bernadette frowned at Alice.

"I want to know the potion formula for the Sequence 0 of the 'Fate' pathway," Alice shrugged and replied.

"Why do you need that?" Bernadette asked in confusion. "Wait, how do you know about Sequence 0?"

"Your father's diary mentioned it," Alice shrugged again. "As for why I need it... is it strange for an extraordinary being to collect potion formulas?"

Bernadette looked at Alice, answering the question with her eyes.

"Alright," Alice sighed. "But what's the point of asking this? Do you really have what I need?"

"If you read his diary, do you know about the Blasphemy Slate?" Bernadette asked, looking at Alice.

"Yes," Alice nodded, suddenly thinking of a possibility. "Do you have the Blasphemy Slate for the 'Fate' pathway?"

Bernadette nodded.

"A 'Mercury Snake' is hunting me," Alice lowered her eyes and calmly replied. "I suspect I am one of its materials for ascending to Sequence 0."

Bernadette opened her mouth but couldn't speak for a while.

"So... what are the materials for the Sequence 0 potion of the 'Fate' pathway?" Alice asked calmly, looking at Bernadette.

Facing Alice's gaze, Bernadette felt the air freeze for a moment, an invisible threat enveloping her. When she tried to find it, the threat had already disappeared.
