The private elevator opened directly into the plush apartment, I ushered her battered form through the doorway with an insistent hand at the small of her back, striving to maintain a clinical detachment.

Yanyan barked out a rusty peal of laughter that rapidly shaded into a grimace as her injuries made their presence known. "Save the dog and pony show for your snooty guests, rich boy. I could use a little 'disarray' to feel right at home for once."

The abrupt whip-crack of a door slamming in my face brought me up short, Yanyan's mocking drawl filtering through the cheap veneer with perfect clarity.

"Give a girl some privacy to get freshened up here, yeah? Even uncultured swine like me like to clean up good after taking a beating to retain some scrap of feminine pride."
