Chapitre 5: Academy Days

Tanna handed Naruto a bag with lunch, "Go on, Naruto. You are in class B - 4."

Naruto beamed, "Okay nee - chan."

Tanna waved as Naruto met with Sasuke and the two walked towards the shared classroom with someone who looked like he belonged to Akimichi clan. It was not Chouji considering she saw his name under a different class with Ino while Shikamaru and Sakura were in another class. Shikaku approached Tanna after the kids went inside to mention the others were waiting for her to which she nodded. A week before the Academy had actually opened Yamanaka had gotten his hands on some of the books she wrote to entertain Naruto. One of the books were Star Trek with the Klingon language with Grammar and pronunciation in it.

Yes, she had been a nerd who was obssesed with Star Trek and learned the fictional language. She has no regrets doing so and even taught Naruto and Sasuke to speak with Klingon making them have their own secret code language. And Ino found out and wanted to learn the language too though Sakura was feeling shy about voicing her own interest. Tanna was visited by Inoichi and Shikaku and given a letter of recommendation from the Hokage to teach a new language at the Academy. Naruto and Sasuke were awfully smug they could already read and write in that language and far more advanced than other kids.

Mikoto, "Tanna - chan, I am so glad you could join us."

Tanna, "I learned something interesting today that's all."

Yoshino, "Oh? What was it?"

Tanna, "No matter how terrifying a Shinobi is none of them can deny their children."

Mikoto snorted, "Indeed, anyway Tanna - chan this is Aburame Himeko. She will be in charge of Grammar like you said."

Himeko smiled, "Hello young Tanna, my hive is very fond of you. How fascinating!"

Tanna noticed the ladybugs approaching her, "Umm... Hello there, nice to meet you and I think they just want my honey dessert."

Himeko, "Dessert? Ah! Yes, they mention you smell sweet."

Tanna, "I do not mind sharing during lunch, maybe I should have brought a little bit more."

Himeko, "Thank you for your consideration young one. Most civilians are scared of my clan."

Tanna, "Well, bugs are known for being one of the strongest existence in the world. A beetle can carry six times their weight, a feat which is impossible for humans without chakra."

Himeko visibly brightened, "You studied about insects."

Tanna, "Naruto loves beetles while Sasuke adores fireflies, Sakura loves butterflies and Chouji adores bees. The rest of their group are not interested in a specific bug but learning about them together was a fun activity."

Himeko hummed, "That is an interesting tidbit to learn."

Tanna, "It is very common for children to always try and find something in common in the most uncommon things."

Mikoto, "I heard you are teaching that Klingon language, you taught Sasuke - kun and Naruto - kun. I think the shinobi are interested in it too."

Tanna gave an amused laugh, "It is a made up language, with made up words."

Yoshino, "Perhaps but it has it's own Grammar, characters and discipline. It will be very useful for those who learn it."

Tanna wanted to protest, but then decided to just go with it in the end and teach the language to those interested. Besides being a bilingual never hurt anyone, right? And having a language that only they could use would be another layer of security. Tanna had to teach the language once a week for every batch at the Academy which meant she held classes twice a day. There were fourteen batches in the Academy divided into three groups with the final students close to graduation being divided into three batches, the second years into five batches and the first years was in six batches. Her first class was with the third years in Class J - 2, followed by the second class after lunch with the second years in Class K - 3.

Now that Tanna thought about it there really was not much detail about the Academy in the anime or manga though it played a huge part in teaching the main characters the basics of being a shinobi. So observing it up close was something new and fresh, though it lost it's charm after a few days, at the end of the day, a school was still a school and the shinobi hopefuls spent most of their time focused on studies. But just like any other school it had it's own version of bunkers and cltiches based on civilian kids, clan kids and orphan kids. Naruto's group fell under the mixed group territory and aside from that the school routine was monotonous.

Tanna grumbled, 'I take it back. It was a good thing the anime and manga skipped the Academy days.'

Mikoto, "Is something in your mind Tanna - chan? You have been staring at the register for quite a bit."

Tanna, "Oh just a thought. I was wondering if I could rope Kakashi into teaching at the Academy as well."

Himeko hummed, "Why?"

Tanna jabbed a finger at the window, "He is supposed to be on a break but he keeps following Naruto around like some guard dog. Might as well give him something to do instead of watching him slunk around."

Yoshino coughed, "Ah! That he does."

Himeko, "I think I have an idea."

It had been one month since the Academy started, long enough for Naruto and Tanna to fall into a routine of getting up early in the morning and heading to school. They would head to their respective areas and while Naruto attended class, Tanna taught her own class and now started to deal with paperwork read homework and tests. After class, Naruto would wait for Tanna by training while she finished up her work with Sasuke who insisted on staying behind for extra training. Both boys would return home with their older sister and mother after they had finished their work for the day. Sometimes Itachi would be with them waiting for the ladies to come out or it would be Kakashi giving pointers.

The most interesting thing was watching the kids show interest in different fields not just study and become a genius or knuckle head because of lack of interest in theory. Lee, who was a year older than Naruto showed a lot of interest in poison and chakra control training. Tanna was expecting Lee to be interested in Taijutsu like in the anime but it seems making tree walking a reward for learning about the poisons available around fire country worked a little too well in making Lee interested in mastering chakra. Sure, he had very little chakra and according to his health profile his chakra coils were very underdeveloped but it gave him a better chance to control and mold his chakra.

Despite the difference in the beginning, it seems like Lee still caught Gai's attention if the rumours were anything to go by. Sakura was another change, being acquainted with more Uchihas then just Sasuke, changed her in good ways. It looks like she did not develop her obsessive crush on Sasuke like the manga or anime. Rather the pinkette mostly preferred the presence of the older twins, or one of them over Sasuke who was more interested in spending time with Naruto. It was not a bad thing in the long run, this might just spare her from the emotional and mental turmoil that her anime and manga selves went through. Kuroda - kun looked interested in Sakura too while his twin younger twin Shinichi was more focused on training.

Mikoto, "Oh? Is that the paperwork for the missions?"

Tanna, "Yes, aside from farm work from the non shinobi clans, the Akimichi clan has added beef, pork and poultry manufacturing as a mission. It will be a safe way to disenitize the kids to killing without actually murdering a person."

Yoshino looked at the details, "It will teach them to recognize good quality meat and poor quality meat while showing them which plants are good for the cattle and which are not. This is hitting many stones in one though from the looks of it will be a year long mission."

Himeko was smiling, "The older students will be learning at the Aburame fields. It is filled with every type of flower possible. They will learn which flowers are best to make honey and which make poison."

Tanna, "They will be the first to start. They will be dealing with two missions in a year instead of one. I hope they are ready for the physical work."

Mikoto, "Whether they can last or not will tell us if they are fit to be shinobi. So, we should not be disappointed if many of them drop out after this."

Tanna mentally begged for forgiveness, 'I am truly sorry for increasing the study workload kids. But if it will keep you alive instead of being killed in a mission then it is for the best.'

Naruto waited for her to finish like always, "Nee - chan, nee - chan, guess what, guess what?"

Tanna, "What is it Naru - tan?"

Naruto, "I got better at Shuriken throwing and Mizuki - Sensei had to give me more marks then last week."

Tanna looked at Naruto when he mentioned Mizuki then looked forward, "Did he now?"

Naruto, "Yeah, even he could not deny I was better than last week. Last week I hit five out of ten targets. This week I hit eight out of ten, so it was an improvement."

Tanna, "Good job Ruru, you are getting better than before."

Naruto grinned, "And I think Ino - tan is jealous."

Tanna raised her eyebrow, "Why would she be jealous?"

Naruto had an impish look, "Sakura - chan is going on a date with Kuroda - kun. I think his mom and Sakura's mom agreed they would not be a bad match."

Tanna had an understanding look, "I see, she is feeling left out. You and your friends should distract Ino then Naruto. Challenge her to a contest and keep her busy."

Naruto nodded, "Okay nee - chan."

Tanna smiled, "I am sure she will be fine with you all beside her. Plus, it's not like Sakura is leaving us anyway."

Naruto nodded and then scowled, "There are this two new guys that joined us. The older guy is sweet but the younger one is really weird. He keeps giving us weird nicknames."

Tanna, 'What? Ugh! I knew Danzo would not stay quiet. This has his fingers all over it.'

Naruto, "He keeps calling me a twink. I don't know what that means and I don't like it."

Tanna had black lines on her face, "He did what?"

While this was funny through the screen, it was just different in real life, looks like she needed to have a talk with the other ladies about introducing etiquette classes sooner rather than later. But it would have to be done at a later date because they had to work on adjusting the theoretical studies with mock missions. Naruto's batch was heading to one the civilian owned farms to work on it early in the morning. Tanna packed him lunch and reminded him to take a change of clothes and the new shower system had been implemented inside the Academy for after missions. Naruto nodded sleepily and went to the Academy to join his group alongside Shikamaru who was asleep on his feet.

Their Jounin Sensei who was currently on a break because of her pregnancy got their attention and introduced herself. Her name was Hyuuga Zanmei, they were to call her Hyuuga - Sensei and instructed them to introduce themselves. Zanmei nodded as they gave their names and then moved out to head to the farm as she explained their first task was to till the land. The kids left with her and Naruto noticed Sakura was in a group with Ino while Kuroda was in a group with Chouji who was eating chips. Those groups would be heading to completely different areas to do their mock missions which would help filter the hopefuls out.

Tanna sat in the office of the quiet Academy, 'Well, looks like some kids are better at grasping a new language more than others.'

A knock came, "Ahem! Tanna - Sensei."

Tanna would never get used to that title no matter what, "Yes, Iruka - Sensei?"

Iruka placed a bunch of papers in front of her, "I wrote a full comprehensive study on the uses of turmeric in Klingon."

Tanna took the papers and went through the report, "I am honestly impressed Iruka - Sensei. Maybe you will be one of the first to pass Shikaku - dono's test."

Iruka blinked, "Shikaku - dono is conducting the test?"

Tanna, "I left the dealing of Shinobi matters to him. He said he can handle it."

Iruka, "Oh! I suppose I understand the reasoning, Tanna - Sensei."

Iruka and Tanna talked more discussing the Grammar and structure of the report and how to make it more cognizant. If he cleared Shikaku's test, Iruka would be one of the few teachers in the Academy to be able to teavh the language. Tanna on the other hand was left wondering if she accidentally created a nerd version of Naruto show and refused to think about it. The next two years went by with everyone focusing on their tasks and the kids clearing the first year exam. Their second year an future shinobi started more or less the same with them starting the first day with a mission. This time the missions were more or less geared towards service and paperwork.

Naruto and Sasuke were both interested in doing the patrol missions for the Konoha Police Force under Fugaku. But just like the first year shinobi hopefuls they did not have a say in picking the missions and the first mission the boys got was at the hospital, sanitizing one of the floors. Not the most fabulous or illustrious mission but it was a reminder that shinobi were there to protect and help the village in anyway possible. It was after three weeks of working at the hospital Sasuke and Naruto finally got the chance to patrol for the Police Force. On the other hand Shikamaru and Ino got stuck with hospital duty which the Nara complained about to his friends as being troublesome.

Either way it looks like some of the students Sakura, Hinata, Chouji and a few clan and civilian kids became interested in pursuing medical studies. Tanna expected to have a handful of kids, like around seven or ten from all the groups to show interest but this was more than expected. There were around fifteen children who were serious about becoming healers and now Tanna was talking with the hospital in charge and the Hokage to teach these kids some basics like caring for patients, helping the sick with day to day tasks etc. The nurses more than welcomed the extra help but not before giving them strick instructions and rules they needed to follow.

In simple words, the second year shinobi had decided on whether they wanted to be attackers, defenders, healers or background workers. Shikamaru and Ino was more interested in the work going on in the background from the reports Tanna received on her desk. She was not sure why she was being given this report though, yes, she understood she was one of their teachers but still. The hard core fact remained that she was a civilian not a shinobi and knowing details of the interests and future goals was not exactly needed by her. But she did not complain it was interesting to compare what was happening between the now and the then.

Tanna, "Another batch exams cleared."

Mikoto, "Indeed, I must admit we have not had a variety of future shinobi hopefuls like this new batches and hopefully in future batches too."

Himeko, "If we keep up the steady work I think we can churn out more shinobi specialized in different fields. I know the Akimichi were very happy to take in two apprentices from the graduating batch."

Yoshino, "Yes, they were not able to get a third member but their exceptional work at understanding the cooking methods and knife use was hard to pass up."

Tanna, "Chouza - dono was very happy to be able to teach new faces his clan specialties and the fact one of them is a Yamanaka was the icing on the cake."

Mikoto chuckled, "Yes, I have heard Ino - chan brag about her older cousin getting an apprenticeship to everyone who will hear."

Himeko laughed, "Shikamaru, Naruto and Sasuke will be in this graduating batch. I bet you three are excited."

Yoshino, "Of course we are. Do not pretend you are not. After all Shino - kun is part of the batch too. To think four years has already passed since we started here."

Tanna, "True that! Time sure flies when you work. To think they were only six years old when they started. They are all ten years now."

Yoshino, "They will still have to study for three years before graduating at thirteen. So we still have time with them."

Mikoto, "Yes, this will be the years they pick a field to focus on. Sasuke wishes to train in Kenjutsu and get ANBU training before taking up his father's position."

Tanna, "Those are really good options if he wants to focus on security as his main. As for Naruto, he is still into becoming a Seal Master and Hokage."

Yoshino sighed, "My son it seems is content with being clan leader. He has no desire to be anything else."

Tanna sighed then, "The Sandaime wants me to teach the Economy of Konoha as well, now that we have Iruka - Sensei and Ayako - Sensei helping out with learning a second language."

Himeko, "Our Tanna - chan is very reliable that's why."

Yoshino chuckled, "Indeed, we would not be sitting together like this talking to each other if not for you Tanna - chan."

Tanna narrowed her eyes, "You just don't want extra work."

Mikoto laughed at the pout coming from the brunette as she got up to go to her calligraphy class. Mikoto hummed to herself as she walked down the hallway to her next class and recalled the last few years. When she had first seen Tanna she had not been sure what to think of the very obvious foreigner next to her Godson. In the early days she had observed her with a close eye, realizing the girl was not scared of her and neither did she feared the shinobi. In her own words, as long as they were not traitors to their village you could trust a shinobi to do the right thing. It was a very simple way to look at things but it was a logic she could not refute without calling her fellow shinobi possible traitors.

Mikoto smiled, "Alright class today we will be learning how to write an essay in calligraphy."

"Yes Mikoto - Sensei."

Mikoto, "Take out your ink stones and start grinding the ink like I taught you."

Naruto, "Sensei, what is the topic for the essay?"

Mikoto, "The topic is careers. You will be writing about your future careers. You will start with introduction obviously then followed by your career choice, the reason of interest and an ending."

Mikoto smiled as the students got to work on their calligraphy after they finished grinding their ink stones. Naruto had shown to be adept in sealing as seen by his use of the flash bomb seals that Akari - chan had previously taught him. But Tanna wanted Naruto to first have a sharp and clear calligraphy writing skills before he attempted to study the more dangerous ones. In a way Mikoto could understand why, seals were a very intricate subject and needed to the point detailing and instructions. Naruto was not deterred though and worked hard to always get high marks in calligraphy aside from Shikamaru and Sakura.

Mikoto, 'Pity Sasuke - kun is not that interested in this subject. Ah well!'
