"SISTERS! FRIENDS! Penny~!" Ruby called out, waving to Yang, Cinder, Blake, Weiss, Emerald, and Neo with one hand, then at Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, Ren, and Mercury with the other, then finally rounding out with a bashful little finger wave at Penny, blushing brightly and giggling as Penny returned her greeting.
"Haven't you done this bit before?" Cinder asked, raising an eyebrow as she filed her nails and rolled her eyes, huffing at Ruby's performance and pursing her lips as she made sure two of her nails on each hand were shortened because of… reasons. Reasons that made Emerald look away and cough into her hand in embarrassment. "I swear we were all here when you showed off Nora's new hammer. Are we doing that again?"
"Nope! Jaune is still waffling on whether or not he wants me to integrate a railgun into Crocea Mors and Miló and Akoúo̱ are pretty much perfect as they are," Ruby paused, narrowing her eyes at Pyrrha, who cleared her throat and looked away. "Except for Pyrrha's refusal to let me reconfigure the internals to accept stronger Dust shots-"
"It'd take too long to get used to the new effects! I'm fine as I am," Pyrrha protested, blushing a little and waving off Ruby's attempts at upgrading her weapons. "M-maybe later, alright?"
"Mmm… fine… Anyway! Today is our last day of break before classes begin on Monday, so I wanted to make sure we started this semester off with a bang!" Ruby grinned, slamming down a binder that was, very clearly, Weiss' but now had a hastily scribbled on post-it note proclaiming it to be the "Best Day Ever Friendship Binder!!!" with several more notes worth of big red exclamation marks. She quietly ignored Yang's crack about always starting her semesters off with a Yang . Ugh. She never did stop using that pun. "I've got plans for everything and everyone, and it's all set to all-day! We're gonna jam-pack today so full of stuff that-"
"Is that my binder?" Weiss asked crossly, narrowing her eyes at Ruby and making a rather pinched face of discontent. "When and why did you steal my binder- you can't have possibly replaced all of my notes in there- did you just throw out a bunch of my stuff and leave the rest as filler!?"
Ruby cleared her throat, looking away shiftily while holding up a pair of peace signs. "I am not a crook."
"Ruby Rose!"
"Anyway!" Ruby continued on, slamming her hand down onto the binder with a bright smile, completely ignoring Weiss' protests as she looked around at her friends, family, and girlfriend. "We're gonna have the bestest day ever guys! C'mon! I've got ideas for team sports and gaming and a trip out to Vale and movies and snacktime and-"
"Ow! Nora!"
"Sorry! I was aiming for Yang!" Nora called out, waving from near the other end of the table as she flicked another grape across the intervening space, almost beaning Weiss in the forehead again before Blake flicked her hand out at lightning speed, catching the grape midair between a pair of chopsticks. "Nice catch!"
"You might want to work on your aim," Blake deadpanned, rolling her eyes as she returned fire with one of Weiss' pizza bagels flicking it out before the heiress could react and catching Jaune right in the mouth. "... As should I, apparently."
"Oh no, I know exactly where this is going," Emerald muttered, forking a breakfast sausage and chewing on it as food started flying across the table, with only Penny really still paying to Ruby as she somewhat obliviously continued rambling on about everything they could do that day.
For someone who napped as much as Ruby, she sure could be mouthy at six in the gods damned morning.
"Neo dear, please say out of the crossfire," Cinder deadpanned, flicking a butter knife between her fingers and intercepting a flying croissant before it could knock over Neo's morning coffee ice cream sundae.
Cinder… privately thought to herself that Neo eating ice cream with every meal was… perhaps a bit much, but… well. They worked off the calories anyway so whatever. It worked out.
Neo just rolled her eyes in response as the table started to descend into food tossing shenanigans, with Nora, Jaune, Mercury, and Yang doing the most of it while Blake, Emerald, and Ren followed along… up until the point that Nora got too excited and picked up a large cream pie off of a nearby food cart and lobbed it straight at Ruby … only to miss and slam Weiss straight in the face while she was berating Ruby for haphazardly repurposing her binder.
"Uh oh," Nora whispered, backing up slightly as the entire rest of the table gasped- even Ruby taking a few steps away from the now trembling, steaming heiress as the entire area burned with cold from the expression of Weiss' suddenly flaring Aura. "I missed."
"We're dead," Jaune sighed, making the sign of the brother gods across his chest and clapping his hands together as he silently wept for the cleanliness of his uniform. "We're so dead. The laundry workers are gonna kill us, and then Professor Goodwitch is going to extra kill us for causing trouble the day before classes start.
"Well… at least this promises to be… fun … sort of," Pyrrha offered, wincing a little as she surreptitiously used Polarity to bring over a plate of baguettes, preparing for the inevitable meltdown before-

"And… here we go," Mercury snorted, watching as Nora went flying back as an entire bucket of chicken slammed into her face with enough force to bowl her into and through three tables, knocking them aside with an almighty crash that sent the other students in the cafeteria immediately start edging away… up until the point that Weiss started shouting.
"YOU ABSOLUTE DOLT! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO MY HAIR!? YOU'VE RUINED HOURS OF WORK! YOU ABSOLUTE- YOU-YOU- YOU FOOL! THIS DEMANDS RETRIBUTION! I DEMAND YOUR HEAD!" Weiss screamed, glyphs forming around her as she jumped onto the table with a mighty roar, still covered in the remains of the pie as she wielded an Aura-filled swordfish as though it were the actual Myrtenaster. And Blake and Yang jumped up next to her, shouting their assent while Ruby just palmed her face and muttered to herself.
"Oh here we go."
And thus, the screaming began for real as Team _WBY, Team CMNE, Team JNPR, and Team R+P all scrambled for territory and started hitting each other with as much food as they could, knocking over tables and sending the wooden constructs flying along with their fellow students. In the ensuing chaos of the beginning stages of the Food War, nobody noticed four decidedly non-native students kick open the door and freeze at the sight of a flood of other students running out, plus the screams and shouts of "Food Fight!" and "OH GOD MY HAIR!" and "THERE'S GHOST PEPPER SAUCE IN MY UNDERWEAR AAUGH!!!".
"Poor guy," Sun muttered, wincing as he stood with his teammates and cleared his throat, all of Team SSSN watching as sides were formed, food was thrown, Jaune somehow managed to get flipped in such a way that he slammed face first into the window, and Nora managed to stack a whole shitload of tables together into a massive mountain she proclaimed as a castle.
"YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME DOWN, ICE PRINCESS!" Nora cried, throwing her head back with maniacal laughter as she stood there with a watermelon impaled on a pole, a lopsided crown made of hastily folded napkins, a few crushed drink cans, and Weiss' hair pin sitting jauntily on her head at an odd angle. "I'M QUEEN OF THE CASTLE! I'M QUEEN OF THE CASTLE!"
"JUSTICE WILL BE SWIFT! JUSTICE WILL BE PAINFUL! IT WILL BE MY REVENGE SERVED COLD!" Weiss screamed back, pointing dramatically and crushing a carton of apple juice in her hand and raising it high as Blake and Weiss cheered alongside her, Ruby and Penny watching from their own little fort of food items and tables while Team CMNE watched and waited for signs of weakness.
In an instant, the stalemate was broken and an all out brawl began- Yang rushing forward with twin fists stuffed inside turkeys and matching up against Pyrrha's baguette javelin, Weiss using condiment bottles in lieu of Dust effects against Nora, and Blake using liberal application of Shadow to dodge Ren's thrown leeks while striking back with a chain of sausage links.
Jaune just threw watermelons and tried not to get hit in the balls by a thrown, frozen turkey. Thankfully for Pyrrha's prospects of future bedroom activities, he did not.
Unfortunately, he still got hit in the gut, which threw him just off balance enough for Neo to enter the fray using her Overactive Imagination and slam an entire raw halibut into his face, knocking him out of the fight for now… only to draw Pyrrha's attention away from Yang and causing a shift in the tides as _WBY and _NPR turned towards CMNE, all of whom were standing their with their own makeshift weapons- Cinder with swords made of molten and reshaped caramel, Mercury with a half eaten garlic bread stick held like a dagger, Emerald with twin chains made of somehow linked together ramen noodles, each tied to a sickle made of chicken wings. Neo, meanwhile, flicked back into existence with a popsicle held delicately between her fingers.
"You guys… have no idea who you're dealing with," Mercury smirked, holding his "knife" at the ready as he rolled his neck and motioned for the others to come closer.
"What, nothing for Talaria?" Yang asked, cocking her turkey covered fists and grinning at her "cousin" and getting ready to brawl.
"... I am not putting my shoes in food. That's nasty," Mercury shuddered, pulling a face at the thought of getting food sauce or drippings in his shoes and socks. "Nuh uh, no way."
"... Yeah, that's fair."
And thus, the brawl resumed- Yang faring much better than the rest of her team as hallucinations and illusions flew around the entire area, Team _NPR getting all but destroyed just by Neo alone, who kept hitting them with a half frozen halibut while they were trying and failing to keep track of her movements- Pyrrha stood up the best, managing a few hits in return and breaking a baguette across Neo's gut before getting flung halfway across the room. Cinder overextended and lost her caramel swords to Nora's sheer brute strength, getting struck in the chest and getting launched through the roof so hard that she disappeared into the sky before crashing back down nearly twenty seconds later. Through it all, even with the rest of the fighting, Ruby and Penny stayed at the edges- staying mobile and dodging everything as they pelted muffins and apples at any target of opportunity, dodging around Mercury's thrown sausages, avoiding Jaune's ill timed shield charge with a food tray, and even managing to avoid Weiss blasting the entire floor with ranch and making an ice field that Yang then slammed her fist into and turned into a salty smelling cloud of eye burning ranch mist.
The fight between four factions became a free for all chaos, thrown punches and weapon strikes filling the cloud as the ranch slowly settled, screams and splats and the sounds of crunching and munching- "RUBY STOP EATING THE WEAPONS OF MY DIVINE RETRIBUTION!" "THEN STOP TRYING TO THROW COOKIES LIKE SHURIKEN!"- filling the air as Ruby intercepted everything that even remotely came Penny's way… up until the point that her beloved took a stray shot to the head from a flying ketchup bowl, red splattering into the air as she stumbled to the side with an expression of shock etched into her slowly dimming eyes.
Everything froze. The cloud settled.
Everyone stared.
"Penny-!? PENNY! NO! NOOOO! DON'T LEAVE ME! My beautiful firefly- taken so soon, our love had only just blossomed!"
"D-do not… worry for me," Penny murmured dramatically, stuttering and gasping for air as she reached up and slowly stroked Ruby's cheek, tears filling her eyes as the red splatter across her head dripped slowly and shards of ceramic slowly splattered against the stained tile floor. "I… will be going… to a better place. Please… my love… my wishing star… go… fight… win this for me… my dearest beloved… bleh."
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
For a moment, all was silent- nobody spoke as Ruby gently laid her lost lover to rest.
She said nothing, turning to face the monsters that had taken her young love from her.
"It's time to end this," Ruby whispered, eyes glowing with hateful crimson as she glared and kneeled down in a runner's crouch.
"... Ah shit," Cinder sighed, immediately knowing what was coming.
Ruby ran. The wind followed.
Professor Goodwitch yelled at all of them for a solid fifteen minutes before Professor Ozpin calmed her down.
Penny and Ruby won bragging rights for the rest of the day.
