"I am not his lover…just a…just a friend," Ariana said to the woman as she corrected her notion. She couldn't bring herself to tell Sybil that she was with Nicolai because she owed him a gigantic debt. 

And telling her that they were just acquaintances sounded wrong, as acquaintances do not go around shopping for a party together. 

This was why Ariana settled on being friends with Nicolai. The only slightly upsetting thing —— was the fact that she felt oddly relieved over the fact that Nicolai and Sybil were never a thing.

Sybil glanced at her as if she did not trust her words and turned to look at Nicolai before asking, "She is really not your fuck buddy?" 

"Of course not," Nicolai rolled his eyes before replying, "Have you ever seen me come with any other woman before? I don't buy shit for my fuck buddies. They start in bed and end once they step out."
