People questioned her whereabouts and why she hadn't returned, but Maria effectively dodged all inquiries by stating she was serving the Lord. This wasn't to save her skin but rather to avoid unnecessary trouble until Mordret awakened. Once he was conscious, Maria planned to repent for all her sins.
