Maya lay awake on the bed, looking quietly at the ceiling as if something interesting was there. She blinked when someone stepped out of the bathroom. Her room had been moved to the VIP section in Azalea-Bloom Hospital after her health stabilized. Through it all, Old Bat had not left her side.

Old Bat dried her hands with a towel. "Let me cut the apple into smaller sizes. The doctor said you'll need them." She brought out the apple she had washed and started cutting it.

Maya sat up from the bed, looking out the window. She could see how wet the street was from her room, evidence of the nonstop heavy rain that had graced the city these past few days. The rain was as heavy as Maya's thoughts. What now?
