Chapitre 3: 3

The Chancellor's office had a nice feel to it. The room was spacious and from its windows you could see one of the best views you could get on the island. Behind a modern looking desk a bald bearded man was slowly going through his files. He stopped after hearing knocking on the door.

"You may enter." He said in his baritone voice.

Two people entered his office. One he recognized as his fellow staff member, Dr. Crowler. Next to him was a young blond student from the Slifer dorm.

"I'm sorry to interrupt your day, Chancellor Shepherd. " The man gritted his teeth. "However, we have a problem on our hands." He not so subtlety glanced at the supposed trouble maker.

"Just this once I have to agree, Professor." Robert ignored the buffoon's stare. "Its a pleasure to meet you in person, sir." He bowed his head towards the man sitting behind the desk.

"What seems to be the issue?" He motioned the pair to take a seat in the armchairs.

"This student showed blatant disrespect towards my authority." Crowler sniffed.

"Apparently wearing red and defeating poorly taught Obelisk students was a crime." Robert said. "Oh and this person over here believes I should be happy that their kind showers me with slurs."

The Chancellor could feel a headache coming. He knew of his teacher's methods as this wasn't the first year he's been doing so.

"And this boy also incited his fellow students to leave the classroom. I shall not allow for this kind of behavior to continue." Crowler tried making this a bigger issue.

"Only after you shunned and embarrassed the whole Slifer dorm." The teen remarked. "A shame you didn't leave after that embarrassment of a duel."

"Now listen here you..."

"That'll be enough Vellian." The Chancellor rubbed his tired eyes. "What's your name?" He directed the question to the teen.

"Robert Cross, sir."

"Could you tell me your side of the story first?"

"Of course."

Robert began with the incident at the blue dorm. Recalling how the Obelisk students almost wanted to gang up on them if not for Alexis Rhodes's intervention. Then he summarized what has happened in the morning and what had lead up to this point.

"He was the instigator." Crowler tried to discredit his story.

"Will you shut up for once?" Robert was peeved. "It was you who failed. Not only did your words make us land in this situation, but now I have an inkling of suspicion who righteously taught them to target us red students. It's all in the way you speak."

"I didn't tell them anything." The teacher exclaimed.

"Then maybe you should've, instead of calling us Slifer Slackers in public. Who the hell gave you your title?" Robert asked. "Being a doctor means something. It shows that you have excelled in teaching others. Where was that today, huh?"

"My students are one of the best in the world you insufferable brat." Crowler saw red. "I've been teaching for years and made it my goal to absolve the world from meaningless drifters that don't even know the basics."

"Oh really? And I thought the role of an educator was to find greatness in every student. Not only those that brown nose you with cash."

"Now listen here you, Silfer.."

"End that and I'll see to your end, Crowler." His eyes shot a wave of hatred so cold it made the Professor stop.

After the wild burst, Robert remembered to breath in and out slowly. Calming his nerves and bringing back his cool.

"The only reason red is considered a bad thing is because of you and that ass hat who even after all these years wasn't able to handle a loss." The teen started.

"If you don't remember then I shall freshen up your memories." Robert stood up. "The Slifer whose existence you vehemently abhor was Yugi Moto's first God card."

Robert walked towards the door. "And before I leave. Last time I checked, the King of Games was still your better, Professor." Robert watched as the man looked away in shame. "Remember that next time when you hurl an insult at us Dragons. Because that's what we are."

With a click the teen left the room which was now shrouded in silence.

"I'm back, baby". Jaden entered his dorm room only to get crushed by the dark somber atmosphere. "Guys, what's the matter?"

"Professor Banner grounded us, Jaden." Syrus sighed.

"It's not licious at all. We've missed lunch." Chumley added.

"It can't be that bad. Even Crowler let me out earlier then I expected." Jaden scratched his chin in thought. "He was a little bummed out when I think about it."

"Have you seen Robert, by any chance?" Syrus asked.

"I saw him go with teach to the principal." Jaden replied. "After that I haven't seen him."

"He's going to get expelled. I just know it." Syrus was disheartened.

"I wouldn't worry about it." Jaden grinned. "He's got our dorm's back."

"Lot will that help with." Chumley remarked. "It's better to prepare a farewell party."

"Not helping Chumley!" The blue haired teen yelled.

"Why do you have to be so loud?" A familiar not caring tone reached their ears.

"Robert!" The trio saw the blond teen leaning against the doorway.

"Enjoyed your detention, Jaden?" Robert smiled.

"Never mind that. Where were you?" Syrus asked.

"I had to chill out by myself." The teen shrugged. "Can't do that exactly with everyone breathing down on my neck."

"What did the Chancellor say?" Chumley inquired.

"I don't know. I've left before they could charge me with anything." He replied nonchalantly. Clearly not caring about the consequences.

Before anyone could reply their PDA's beeped. It seemed everyone got the same message. Robert opened his device and frowned.

"Banner wants us at the cafeteria. We have 5 minutes to get down." He summarized the email.

"Great. Not even two days have passed and we're already in trouble." Syrus whined.

"Let's leave before he starts having his panic attacks." Jaden and Chumley agreed and followed Robert outside.

"I'll not be forgotten!" Syrus ran after his laughing friends.

They were the last of the dorm to enter the cafeteria. At the front, next to the kitchen Professor Banner was calmly waiting with Pharoah on his lap.

"Ah, the stars of our dorm. Please sit down." How the man didn't blink still unnerved some of the students.

With the door finally shut and everyone sitting in silence the teacher cleared his throat and cast his serious gaze upon the crowd.

"I was notified about the events that happened after our morning class." The tension rose in the closed room. Students were waiting for the inevitable verdict. Was this the end?

"And I'd like to say," the man paused before smiling, "That I'm proud of you."

The students were shocked how the tone changed. They looked side to side not believing the man's words.

"It may come as shock to some, why I've said this. However, it's not that far off from what we as an institution for learning Duel Monsters want to impart our fellow students with."

He looked through the window. "You see, we can teach you the basics. Give you opportunities to grow and challenge yourselves. But there's something only you can learn on your own."

"How to stand for what's right and to never lower your head against any adversities." He gave them a genuine smile.

The eyes of the students brightened up with pride.

"You must never forget the reason you're here. It's to become better duelists." Banner's face became serious. "And as much as I'd like to continue we have to address the elephant in the room. Mr. Cross please stand up."

"Yes, professor." His eyes didn't waver.

"I have to thank you for your courage. It's unfortunate that the price you'll have to pay is unreasonably high." Banner's words made the room fill up with complaints.

"You can't do this!"

"We won't let you get him expelled!"

"Silence or there won't be any Pizza Friday's." Apparently food was an enough excuse to forget their pride.

"Amateurs." Robert clucked his tongue.

When the crowd calmed down the Dean continued where he stopped.

"Mr. Cross isn't going to be expelled. At least not yet." He paused. "However until he stays here he won't he able to get promoted to another dorm, permanently." He said the last part slowly.

"Oh well, it seems I'll have to dig up a pool by myself." Robert wasn't phased by this. He liked red better anyway. But his hair screamed blue was the answer.

"Pool? Now that's game." Ryouta gave a thumbs up.

"Hey..." Jaden was sitting in a corner all blue.

"It's not the time to worry about your catch phrase." Syrus pulled the brooding man back. "Didn't you hear Banner. He can't no matter how many times he wins get promoted."

"So?" The Kuriboh haired teen asked.

"Why do I even bother?"

"Exactly, it's not your problem but mine." Robert remarked. "But that's not all, isn't it, teach?"

"Other than the formerly mentioned restriction, your grade will be the average out of everybody's grades sitting here."

"Is that so?" The Slifers felt chills on their necks as Cross turned to them.

"As for all of you." Banner addressed the room. "You're suspended from classes for three days."

"No school?"

"Did he say no school?"

Seeing that the Dean wasn't joking the room started to cheer.

"This is what I'm talking about."

"Sleep until noon? Don't mind if I do."

The exuberant atmosphere was cut short by a deafening sound.

"Was that gong here before?"

Robert was playing with a mallet in his hands. "You didn't think you'd get free time, now didn't you?"

"We won't?" Sam Connor shuddered from the teen's not so innocent smile.

"Oh no, little one." Robert said with gentleness not fitting his face right now. "I'm going to use every last minute to shape you into the duelists you ought to be."

"Mercy?" Someone hopelessly pleaded.

"You shall get none." His eyes flashed mischievously.

-------

The lecture hall was filled with yellow and blue students. A third of the seats was vacant as there were no red students. This was the forth day after the Slifer dorm got suspended because of their actions.

"A shame those wastes are coming back." Chazz was annoyed.

"Why couldn't they just get rid of them?" Gerald said with haughtiness.

"You're still here, loser?" Princeton mocked. "Why don't you go sit down were the trash is."

"Said he who almost lost to a Kuriboh." Gerald gritted his teeth.

"Do you want to start something, Noname?"

"It's already started, shit for brains."

"And they're at it again." Mindy watched in distaste as the Obelisks were kept from fighting by their lackeys.

"At least when the Slifers were here there was no infighting." Jasmine was leisurely shuffling through her fashion magazine.

After the Slifers were suspended the Obelisks found themselves at a lost. Without their promised punching bags they seemed to lose their meaning in life. At first they tried to antagonize the Ra students. However, they failed miserably when Bastian Misawa not only defeated three Obelisks, but also made them listen through his lecture on the application of string theory in Duel Monsters. The three poor chaps were sitting at the edge of the hall, to be as far as possible from the number menace.

"It's so boring without them." Alexis was watching the front row where a specific Slifer had been sitting.

"Oh my gosh." Mindy exclaimed. "Is she?"

"I think she is." Jasmine squealed.

"What are the two of you doing?" The blonde looked at them with a raised brow.

"It was so obvious." Mindy whispered.

"He is kinda cute. But the red though." Jasmine nodded sagely.

"A forbidden love!" The two giggled.

"I think I'm due for other friends." Alexis helplessly sighed seeing her friends ramble away in their world of delusions.

"Alright students, please be seated." Professor Banner walked towards the teaching platform. "Before we start there's someone who'd like to make an announcement."

The crowd was taken out of their guessing as the door opened once more. The Slifer students walked into the hall in uniform fashion, with their heads held up high. The rest of the class watched as they stood behind the Professor.

"What's with those badges on their collars?" A Ra yellow student asked.

"They've gone mad and opened a Rabbit's club?" A female Obelisk student secretly wanted one cute badge for herself.

The last student to enter was Robert Cross. As he approached where Banner was standing some of the Slifers slightly shuddered before regaining their composure.

"Thank you professor." Robert bowed and brought the microphone closer. "Hello fellow associates. Did you miss us?"

The room answered him with silence.

"So cold." He chuckled. "But I understand. I don't like you either."

Tick marks appeared on the students' faces.

"Will you stop clowning around?" Chazz blurted out. "We have better things to do then listening to a washout like you."

"Oh Chazz dear." Robert smiled. "You just get me."

The Obelisk felt something was wrong in the tone the Slifer had said that.

"To cut things short; the times of peaceful days have come to an abrupt end." Robert Cross took out his PDA, the Red students behind him had done the same. "With a touch of a button the whole world as you know it will crumble."

Robert and his fellow reds pressed the send button on their PDA's. The class looked at them as if they had gone mad.

"This is it?"

"What were they sending?"

"Maybe the suspension got to them?"

Their musings where interrupted by beeping. Some of the Obelisks' were getting messages.

"What's this, a challenge for a duel?" Mindy eavesdropped from the side on Alexis's device.

"It's a request for a duel...from Jaden." She looked at the smiling and waving teen in confusion.

"What do you mean by this, Cross?" Gerald clutched his PDA so hard his fingers became white.

The class once again focused their attention on the smirking teen.

A flash of hunger rippled in the blond's blue eyes. Making him look like a predator stalking his prey. "It means that the hunt for the title of King of Games has officially begun.

---------

And cut.

My fellow Yu-Gi-Oh enthusiasts, the stage has been set. The awakening of the dragon will usher the world into a new frontier.

Gone are the times of oppression. Let the Academia learn the pain of the grind.

On a serious note. Thank you all for giving this fanfic a chance. As I've said earlier the game has changed. Be prepared to see a whole different world od dueling thanks to the addition of a new player.

I'd like to calm everyone that thinks this is heading to somekind of massive AU. It won't. However that doesn't mean there won't be new characters and challenges. Some subplots will not come up as they wouldn't have made sense after the slight change brought by yours truly.

As an olive branch I ask of you to share your ideas for decks or strategies that I can implement to make the story more diverse and interesting for the reader. That means decks for any character you'd like, not only the MC. You can also suggest who'd you like to see dueling it out while reaching the peak.

That's about what I've had for today. Thank you for reading once more and see you next time.
