It was an extremely powerful transmitter, reaching over 10 MW, and operated in the shortwave radio bands. Shortwave listeners nicknamed it the "Russian Woodpecker" because of its emissions, which randomly appeared, and sounded like sharp, repetitive tapping noises at a frequency of 10 Hz.
These random frequency hops often disrupted legitimate broadcasts, amateur radio operations, oceanic communications, commercial and aviation communications, and utility transmissions, leading to thousands of complaints from many countries worldwide.
