Chapitre 20: First Golden Globe
The lights dimmed a little and award ceremony kicked off. The first few awards to be presented were related to television categories. Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman won the best actress and actors in Television drama category. Although the movie industry has complete dominance in the entertainment world, but the importance of television still can't be denied. That's why Golden Globe and Acedmy, both include television categories to the awards.
After the television releated awards, the main event of the night finally started. The first award presented were best picture awards. As expected "English Patient" won the award for best drama picture, while "Evita" won in best musical and comedy category. There was not much suspense in these awards, after all "English Patient" was sure to win due to being full of Acedmy taste, while "Evita's" victory can be attributed to be being a biographical film. Biopics and social issues are the favourite topics of the big awards, especially Acedmy. That's also the reason why not many people were surprised that "Evita" beat "Jerry Maguire".
The next category came Best Actor award in Musical and comedy category. The nominations of the best actors were announced. Eddie Murphy (nutty professor),
Nathan Lane (Birdcage), Tom Cruise (Jerry Maguire), Antonio Banderas (Evita) and Kevin Costner (Titcup).
Hearing the name Cruise, Eve's attention was fully attracted and she looked curiously at the envelope in Presenter's hand. When the word Cruise came out of presenter's mouth, an honest smile bloomed on her lips which she didn't even notice herself.
Tom Cruise took the award and gave his winning speech: "I am grateful to the Hollywood Press association for presenting me with this honour. To be honest, I had expectations to win like every other actor here. But someone whose name I won't mention blessed me just few minutes before the ceremony, and my expectations and hopes were raised much more than I had before. So here I am winning the award with that someone's blessing, and I am more happy than I would have been before."
There was a round of applause and many meaningful eyes. Maybe Tom didn't think it clearly, but his speech seemed more romantic than a thanking one. Everyone looked at superstar's wife and smiled.
Nicole also felt a little surprised that Tom mentioned her.
Eve didn't had the time to look at others. She was totally stunned hearing Tom's speech. He seems to be taking about her. She was scared out of her wits, but seeing the surrounding people looking at Nicole Kidman, she sighed in relief.
Meanwhile awards continued, and reached the category of best actress in musical and comedy. The nominations were once again announced. Glenn Close (101 Dalmatians), Debbie Reynolds (Mother) , Madonna (Evita), Eve Thompson (Romeo and Juliet) and Barbara Streisand (Mirror has two faces).
Hearing her name, there was a nervousness and confusion in Eve's eyes. Although she convinced herself before that even if she didn't win, it doesn't matter. But when the moment has come, she still can't wait to get the award.
"Best Actress in a musical and comedy ~ Eve Thompson for Romeo and Juliet."
Hearing her name, Eve was surprised, but she immediately put away her thoughts aside, hugged Baz Luhrmann beside her and went to the stage.
Taking the award from the presenter Mira Sorvino, she looked at the round trophy in her hand with confusion and happiness. Everyone laughed seeing the girl with such obvious expressions.
"Thank you Hollywood Press association for presenting me with this wonderful honour." said Eve, "I always imagined about holding this trophy, and now that I have it, I don't know what to say. This award is a collective award of our whole crew, especially Director Baz and my friend Leonardo. It wouldn't have been possible without you two. In the end, I can only say thank you Hollywood Press again. I will continue to work harder than before and be worthy to stand on this stage again, and receive this trophy again."
After completing her speech, she went to the backstage holding the award for the exclusive interview with vanity fair.
Seeing his well wisher coming out of the backstage, Tom who had just finished his interview, smiled and moved toward her.
Eve was surprised that Tom came first to congratulate her. You must know he is a Superstar, and she, although has won Golden Globe award and has entered the ranks of B list actress, but she is nowhere near his level currently.
Tom said: "Congratulations on winning your first golden globe."
"Thank you Mr. Cruise, and congratulations to you too." she smiled a little stiffly. She doesn't know how to deal with this strange person. She has not even come out of confusion of his winning speech, and he's here again. It's not like he said anything wrong, but she feels a different kind of tension when facing him, which she can't even tell.
Tom smiled and joked: "Just call me Tom. I think we are close enough to call each other with names after eating snacks togther. You are a wonderful girl, and I hope you continue to work harder like this. You should go for interview now, it's about time."
Before the girl could say anything, Tom left. It's so refreshing to talk and tease her. Don't know when he started having such a strange hobby, but it's a good one. He thought.
Eve looked at Tom's leaving back and sighed. Anyway, it's better to stay away. The strange tension is so annoying. Before she could think or say anything, she was pulled by the interviewer to answer some questions.
