Chapitre 11: Chapter 11 - The Purge

Back at the Collector's, Eli's new clothes were the first thing that was appreciated.

Another colleague confirmed that he could give Eli his old mobile phone, and if he didn't mind, he could have it tomorrow; Eli didn't seem to care much about this kind of thing and agreed and thanked him right away.

The group then began to analyse the valuable videos related to Red Moon.

"What is certain now is that the Red Moon has a strong signal affecting or blocking function."

A staff member operated the laptop connected to the TV and explained synchronously, "All the close-range surveillance were temporarily disabled within seconds of capturing the screen with an abnormality. Only the two of you had appeared in the footage by the time it resumed. However, a weather surveillance camera was set up on a distant building opposite this commercial street, and it was taken from thousands of metres away. The image was tiny, but at least it wasn't blocked and captured the Red Moon entity in mid-air."

With that said, she opened the video.

As she said, a vast red sphere suddenly appeared mid-air in the "street + sky" night view of the city, which had been very calm just a second ago. It moved diagonally downwards at a relatively fast speed as soon as it appeared. Even the glass facades of tall buildings not far from it reflected red shadows.

And according to the positioning of the scene on the screen, that red moon was heading towards Middendorffi.

But in just ten seconds, the red moon had descended to a height of thirty or forty metres from the ground. It still didn't sound close, but the red moon was close to the size of a hot air balloon, which was already an imminent distance. Even though they were watching this silent video and already knew the outcome of the incident, the people of "The Collector" still couldn't help but hold their breath quietly.

In the next instant, the red moon suddenly split into two.

The two halves looked like they were about to fall down, but they disappeared in the blink of an eye just as they did.

This part was precisely as Middendorffi had expressed it. And the striking Eli wasn't captured in the frame; it was still too far away, and he wasn't glowing, so it was still hard to be photographed clearly against the night sky.

"Of the surveillance we have available, this is the only one that captured the red moon itself."

After the video was played, the staff member continued, "The footage of the Red Moon after it was broken open has been analysed, and it is indeed likely that it is a mechanical construct inside. We will most likely have to send this video to the docking department in the military ministry, as you understand, after all, it's unacceptable if an airborne machine of this size were to wander through our airspace."

Eli commented, "Is airspace control that strict in this country?"

"Every country is strict, and it's just that some have the will to do it." Henry answered him and asked the colleague operating the laptop again, "Laura, can we analyse what this red moon is now?"

Laura, the unit's technician, zoomed in on the video on the spot and replied, "At this pixel, we can't do it with our equipment. But I'm guessing, purely guessing, ah, the War Department has enough to go on. It's a tricky thing to do."

She paused and turned her head to Middendorffi and Eli, sitting together, "Gentlemen, did you have any other perceptions when you were up close and personal with it? Other than seeing the mechanised parts inside and its ability to generate suction."

The two were silent, and Henry guessed why: "You asked more directly, the two of them in their condition ... guess it's not good to distinguish what is a special perception."

Laura said, "Alright. So the most basic question is, how do you feel it's suspended in the air? See the airflow propulsion device, or feel the movement of the airflow?"

Eli, being the closest to it, decisively replied, "Not yet."

"Does it make a sound when it's running? What about when it disappears and appears? Tinnitus-inducing counts."

"No sound at all. I have not had tinnitus." Eli replied and looked back to Middendorffi, "What about you?"

"... Me neither." Middendorffi described, "Everything was tranquil. I mean, just the original sounds of that environment."

"So, how the hell did this fly ..." Laura frowned, "If this technology is so far above ours, we'll have difficulty figuring out a counterpart. Mr Jones, let me remind you that if we report the Red Moon's matter, the Ministry of War may come to you ... for a 'chat'. And since your ability is so powerful, they will probably ask you to capture Red Moon the next time you come across it."

"Even if I could get close to the Red Moon instantly, what could they give me to capture it?" Eli's tone was cold, "It disappeared right out of my and Bear's senses, not moved quickly. It can disappear out of thin air. Can you build cages that disable it?"

Eli spoke with a rare mocking tone, but it was also the truth. Laura had to reply, "That I dare not presume to say, anyway, the Ministry of the Army must have a lot of high technology we don't know about. If Mr Jones can cooperate, let's do it. Of course, the reward from the military department will not be small; at least, it will be more considerable than what we give."

Eli said, "Even if I can cooperate, the appearance of the red moon is not something I can control."

At those words, the Collectors couldn't help but glance at Middendorffi in unison.

Eli's eyes narrowed slightly, "You want Bear to be the bait?"

"We sure as hell didn't mean it, or we wouldn't be worried about him not having anyone around," Henry said to himself; if you hadn't been able to carry Redmoon, who would have agreed to a stranger staying at Bear's house on your first day? But he couldn't say this explicitly and only say, "But it's not easy for us to speculate on the military department's intentions, so we can only look at the situation when the time comes."

"Even if the Ministry of War comes looking for it, they should be reminded that this is not a probing device in the ordinary sense of a foreign power or unknown life form." Lupin said, "If it's purely an intelligent lifeform manipulating the machinery, why even use the video to lure Bear to look at the Red Moon in the first place? And it's not logical for an intelligent life form to not manifest if Bear doesn't look at the red moon. I suggest it's better not to turn this case over to the military department altogether."

Laura nods, "I'll present it all together, and Mr Jones doesn't have to worry too much; Bear is, after all, a member of the general public, and in the tradition of the military department, it won't put the public in danger."

Eli, not knowing the actual local situation or the credibility of that statement, didn't respond.

"That's all for now, then." Laura said, "None of the other videos are of much value; the downside is that we don't have much to analyse; the upside is that we don't need to process the videos on a large scale."

Eli said, "So you cannot deal with either the intruder or Red Moon right now."

"There are many bizarre presences in this world that can neither be captured nor touched." Facing the "quality control", Lupin responded calmly, "We have 'information bits' that can sense the dead, demons, and even those like Bear who are sensitive to everything, as well as those who can carry heavy machines to blast monsters to pieces, use family heirlooms to suppress evil spirits, and 'removers' like Mr Jones, who can smash entities with a single blow of his sword. Even so, many things were illogical and impossible to capture.

In the future, when technology is more advanced, it will be possible to clean it up thoroughly. But for now, we can only take the best steps, like figuring out how to prevent them and setting up public opinion programmes so that people actively reduce the likelihood of encountering them. We're a comprehensive emergency response agency, not a violent law enforcement agency. In our old saying, it's called 'the art of the job'."

After that string, Eli didn't reply.

He could have said anything; after all, the strength he had shown so far was higher than all of the Collectors. But if he said something like "it doesn't matter", then the two sides were deadlocked, and getting off the stage was a bit difficult.

At the critical moment, Middendorffi said, "I want to look at that 'Vaporiser' you used earlier."

As soon as he opened his mouth, the somewhat stiff atmosphere suddenly loosened. Henry also smiled leisurely: "Little ancestor ah, although that thing hasn't been returned yet, it can't be taken out and played with. If you're not afraid, when I was using it to spray the pseudo-men, Noah-Wong took the 'execution video' so you can see how powerful it is; want to see it?"

Middendorffi nods, "Watch."

Lupin says: "Don't show people that scene ..."

"He's seen the pseudo-human and 'ketchup' scene with only half-shredded bodies, and it's not much of a moment to see justice executed again, is it?" Henry said, "And what if he follows a mission later on? What if he suddenly stumbles upon a similar scene and wastes time? It's better to raise his tolerance now. Oh yeah, Mr Jones, piece of mind?"

Henry suspected that Middendorffi was helping the "Collector", such as showing off a powerful weapon for Eli. Whether he was or not, Henry called on Eli.

Eli, for whatever reason, agrees.

Middendorffi and Eli then spend the last moments of the day before work in the video of the previous pseudo-men being killed.

In the video, you can see that the firearm carried by Henry in front of them has a square barrel that is large enough even when viewed from the side and rear forward. If viewed from the front, seventy-seven or forty-nine muzzles are lined up neatly in this square barrel. Special bullets would be fired from all the gun ports when the switch was pressed down.

Naturally, This big guy needed a person with more strength than usual to carry it. Henry was the man for the job.

He and Noah-Wong stormed into Lily's shared house, shouting only "Warning!" He and Noah-Wong rush into Lily's shared home, shouting "Warning!" and then fire the Vaporiser at the girl who turns around - a pseudo-human anthropomorphic figure. All the bullets were fired in unison, and in the blink of an eye, not to mention hitting, the upper half of the pseudo-human's body was reduced to slag.

The flesh made up of something unknown splattered like a muddy water tan that a wheel had run over.

"Here, this is why I was told a thousand times before that there should be no one behind the door." Henry pressed the pause button on the video, some of the confidence that had been knocked out of him by Eli returning.

"As long as these things are physical, we still have the stuff and the ability to remove them."
