Orion on the side hearing this was wide mouth, he always liked this kind of story, ancient enemies fighting and all but those things are only good in stories. Not much practical.
He likes zombies as well, hell when he was small like 10 maybe he used to dream about his city getting infected by zombies and he with powers would save all his important people, impress the girl he has a crush on and make a harem.
And if anyone were to ask what will happen to other people in the city and may heaven forbid if this freaking virus gets out of control and spread around the world.
His answer would be.
"Why the F*** Laozi should care about them? Do whatever you wanna just make sure that you are leaving enough zombies behind for Laozi to smash their heads in so that Laozi can be the hero,"
Yeah, he used to have that younger master vibes back then.
Orion who suddenly remembers how he used to things and dreams when he was 9 or 10 just blushes with ancient embarrassment resurfacing in his heart.
Shaking his head, he focused back on what was important.
"So you are saying that you and this group of people have been fighting death for 7000 years and protecting the world," Orion asked with still amazement in his mind.
[Yes, but there is much more than just that.
Consider this much like the brotherhood from that game you used to play] Merlin tried to remember the name of the game.
"Assassin's creed," Orion immediately said.
[Yes, the so-called organization you are saying was never an organization in the first place. It was more like a mission passed by from teacher to student.
While teaching, there were also two goals that were passed down in the line.
One to cultivate a disciple in their life and pass on the teaching they are learning to them so that the legacy continues and second to make sure that Death could never achieve what she wanted.
You are currently speaking to the 201st disciple of Draconium blood.] Merlin said while fully knowing that Orion wouldn't understand what the last part would mean.
Just like how he anticipated, Orion at first showed a look of amazement but later he got confused.
"Blood? What the blood has to do with it ?" Orion ponder.
[Well back then changing even someone's blood wasn't that hard, though Emrys own line come from dragon but we don't put that name in our own.
Only I used to do that once I changed my own blood into one of the dragons, the deity that Draconium back then used to worship. Though we later name change but...hmmm well that's not important] Merlin said.
He didn't wanted to say that the name was Davohkiin of all things.
Merlin himself wanted to know how come the Bethesda game studio come up with the same name as that ancient organization.
Orion hearing this was a little confused but just shook his head and accepted what the old man said to him. After all every smart person knows that it's lethal to ask an old person too much about their past.
We could lose hours or even years in their backstories and they won't end. Orion doesn't have that much time anymore.
[Anyway back to the topic, as I said death was responsible for creating most of the chaos in the living world and even the only two great collapses of the world were done by her. The first was mostly done by her directly while the second which I was there to witness was by her through someone else.] Merlin said but there was a dark line over his face, like there was a shadow of what happened in the past looming over him.
Orion tacitly decided to not ask anything about this. But Merlin said it anyway.
[So now that we have some idea of who death is and what she wanted, let me tell you what happened back in my time and how you fit in this entire situation.] Merlin said and Orion had two thoughts about just asking why even he has to fit in this in the first place.
Can't he just stay away from this world-saving bullshit?
'Sigh, which bastard made me the Main Character,' Orion cursed but kept quiet.
Merlin on the side saw Orion making faces and sighs, he thought that the child didn't want to hear another one of his stories.
[I promise to keep this short.] Merlin said and asked for Orion's attention here. It was important that Orion understand what was going on here.
The future as of he knows is gonna be very hard on both the boy and this world.
[Remember the rebirth of magic I was talking about. Well it's going to happen soon] Merlin said with a sigh.
Orion just nodded. Understanding that there was a Catastrophic event was about to... "Happen"...
Orion froze, Merlin on the side could practically hear gears inside Orion's mind shifting.
Currently, Orion's mind was making more noise than his old laptop's fan back home when he used to play anything in it besides YouTube videos.
And in terms and heat, well Orion long has surpassed his laptop.
"When you say soon, how soon are we talking about ..." Orion asked with a small voice. Internally asking god whether he fu*k him over again.
[It's hard to say, originally there was never set a record to identify when the event was going to happen.
This was done by the Draconiums or Guardians as they later came to be known. It was done to make sure that there are no records to trace back the exact time and place where this gonna happen.
This was a major reason to why Death couldn't find the rebirth of magic in all these years. She had around 7 times to get her hands on the rebirth of magic but all the times she failed.
And if you think that she failed because she was weak then you are mistaken. She is anything but weak.
Two major reasons why she failed so many times were becuase she couldn't act directly in this world and secondly, she couldn't figure out where the next Rebirth of magic would take place.
Only the guardians knew this, not just any guardian but only the chosen successor.] Merlin said with reminiscing in his mind.
"So you are saying that she is acting suddenly becuase of the rebirth of magic... and according to what you said, she is most likely going to look for a way to find the exact place of the Rebirth of Magic," Orion pondered and asked, this was the only thing which he can think of.
[Yes and no] Merlin said with a long sigh, clearly there was much more that he wanted to talk about. But before he can even explain his strange answer to Orion's question the boy asks a question which exactly he was going to explain.
"Cool, then all we have to do is to find these guardians you are talking about. You were a part of them right so it shouldn't be hard to find them right?
They most likely will be able to help us with this world saving fiasco right !" Orion smiles with all of his hope depending on this easy way out, fully knowing that life is such bitc* that even something as simple as a smile is hard to give when the entire world is against you.
Merlin seeing what Orion was thinking just shook his head.
[No can do kid, the guardians long have perished] Merlin said with a sad smile on his face.
And there it was, Orion knew it. Hell, he was so used to it by now that he wasn't even surprised anymore.
"Why," Orion asked with a dejected tone, completely losing all interest. He even asks for the sake of asking and nothing more. The old man was about to say anyway so it is better Orion asks for himself, at least then he has the satisfaction of knowing that he is listening to this becuase he wants to and not becuase he has to.
Merlin couldn't read what Orion was thinking like earlier he used to but that was completely unnecessary. He knew the kid so much at this point that he knew what he was thinking by just his face.
Rolling his eyes Merlin said.
[Till now I explain what's going on in general. But to fully understand what's going on I have to tell you what happened when the second great Collapse happened.
As I said there is always a successor who can is chosen by the Guardian. This happens becuase that is the person who achieves the power of Draconium and becomes the next guardian of magic.
Considering this is very similar to Kamar Taj from the Marvel movie, the so-called guardian position can be considered as the sorcerer supreme when compared to the MCU.
Back then I was chosen to be the next guardian. Usually, the head guardian only has one job, continues the guardian's duty and passes on both the teachings and powers inherited to the next successor.
Well, I didn't fall into the usual category back then. It was 500 years ahead of the next rebirth of magic that's when I was chosen. Pretty far away from the time when the next successor was supposed to be chosen.
So I was already very old when the next rebirth took place, thus I had to choose a successor.
So I had one more duty. To defeat anything death cooks up to gain the powers of rebirth of magic. And help my successor to save the world.] Merlin said with a solemn look on his face.
"Ah let me guess, by the look of your face, it seems like you mess up big time," Orion jokes.
But the expected response never arrived. Orion had a bad premonition about what Merlin gonna say next.
"The last time was quite special, as the rebirth of magic and the time to choose the next guardian fell at the same time.
I decided to pass on my power to the next guardian before knowing when the rebirth gonna happen.
The next successor wasn't strong enough at that time when she chose to attack.
She ended up harvesting the soul of my successor.] Merlin said with a gloomy look on his face.
Orion purses his lips at this. His premonition was getting thicker now. Merlin didn't explain much about his last few words.
There was just silence after that.
Infact his last words gave more information than his entire talk.
"Let me guess, she found the location of the rebirth of magic through your successor's soul," Orion asked.
[... Well yeah, and there is much more]
