Chapitre 27: Take Care Son

"Mr. Zyair your father just had a terrible accident, he has arrived in the Motrinomy hospital in critical condition." The phone call from the hospital shook Zyair.

He had just signed the contract with Doran Blackthorn and was still in his office going through the paperwork when the call came from the hospital.

His dad was returning from another city after completing a business deal. The last time Zyair had spoken to him, he was about to reach home. He guessed he never did.

Springing from his seat, Zyair quickly called Lawrence; his intern.

"Ready the car we need to get to the Motrinomy hospital. I am on my way down." With dread filling his heart, he rushed to his private elevator and headed down to the basement parking lot.

Lawrence was waiting for him by his sleek black car, he quickly opened the door for him and Zyair climbed into the passenger seat. Lawrence took the wheel and off they went.

"What happened?" Lawrence inquired, keeping his eyes glued on the road and driving as fast as he could.

"I don't know the details but dad has met with some kind of accident. The hospital just called me. I need to call mom," Zyair was dialling his mother non-stop but she hadn't been picking up.

Lawrence gasped at the information. "I hope it's not serious. I will get you to the hospital in no time."

He drove even faster, passing the ongoing traffic in a blur.

Zyair's mother finally picked up the phone and he tried to keep the panic away from his voice before speaking.

"Hi! Mom, can you sit down? I need to ask you something."

"Zyair! What's wrong?" his mom panicked as he had expected her to. He hesitated, a few drops of perspiration formed on his temples as he carefully crafted his next words.

"Umm, it's dad. He has been in an accident. I don't know any details as I am heading to the Motrinomy Hospital. Can you come over there? Or I can come to fetch you first?"

A sharp intake of breath he heard through the phone before she got her bearings right and said.

"You get to your father. I am on my way." The line went dead and Zyair hoped that it was just a minor accident.

Reaching the hospital, Lawrence stopped the car and Zyair was out in a flash, running towards the front desk of the ER Department.

"My father, Montague Kincaid was brought in earlier. Can you guide me in the right direction?" he impatiently inquired from the assistant nurse. Clutching the counter so hard, his knuckles were turning white.

She checked the open computer and said, "He is under surgery, you will have to wait." She pointed in the direction where he could wait. Lawrence had joined him meanwhile.

"Who brought him in? What is his condition?"

He bombarded her with questions.

"An ambulance did and they took him straight to the operation theatre. Kindly wait, a doctor will talk to you soon." She tried to pacify him but failed.

He stepped back, his face hidden behind the mask was also masking his true emotions. Lawrence reassuringly placed his hand on his shoulder and thumped. The boy was one of the few people he allowed to touch him.

"It will be alright, Mr. Kincaid is a tough man," Lawrence supportively said.

Zyair's hands frustratedly went to his raven hair and he raked them back.

"I can't believe this is happening."

They didn't have to wait much longer when a doctor emerged from the operation theatre.

"Mr. Zyair!" the doctor called him in a grim tone and Zyair knew nothing good would follow. They were renowned figures and everyone in the city knew the masked man without anyone knowing what he looked like.

"The accident was brutal. It was a hit-and-run case. Your driver didn't make it and your father is in critical condition. We tried our best but there is this much we can do. Please, talk to your father. I am sorry to say but I don't think he has much time."

The ground below Zyair's feet shook as he couldn't believe the callous words of the doctor.

"You are a doctor. How can you say this?" Zyair glared at him for even thinking of uttering such an atrocity.

Lawrence tightened his hold on Zyair's shoulders, asking him to relax.

"You should talk to him," the doctor insisted with sympathy dripping from his voice and eyes.

"Go inside. I will handle everything here," Lawrence guided a very broken Zyair inside the intensive care room they had shifted his dad to after the operation.

Zyair quietly entered the room and saw the man he had come to trust, connected to so many machines and wires. He was lying so lifeless, his always energetic and intelligent eyes were closed. His face was bandaged and so was most of his body which seemed to have been crushed.

A nurse was checking his vitals.

"Dad," he softly called out and leaning closer, gently took his hand. Letting him know he was here.

Montague slowly opened his eyes and painfully smiled at his adopted son. One relationship he never thought he would be able to have when they discovered his wife Meena was barren all those years ago. And yet this broken boy had made his way into their hearts and home.

"Zyair," he uttered with some difficulty.

"I am here, dad," he sniffled.

"Seems like —it's the end of — the road for me which —has just begun for you."

Tears of his frustration began to roll down his face. The nurse took her leave, giving them this private moment.

"Don't say that dad, please. You can't leave me," he reached back and took the mask right off his face so his adopted father could see him. The sorrow and pain mingled on his face.

"My beautiful son…." Montague lifted his hand and touched Zyair's face. A satisfied smile was on his bruised lips.

"Take care of your mother…Everything is in your hands now. Be a good leader— a just one. Remember not to—ever break someone's heart— and I hope you get your girl…" with these he began to wheeze.

Zyair tried to call the doctors and nurses but Montague was long gone before anyone could get to him. Leaving all of his legacy to his adopted son in hopes he will reach greatness.
