Chapter 22
STEVE
The abrupt knock on my door caught my attention, disturbing my quiet sleep. The knock didn't stop, and it continued until I answered.
"Can you hold on a second? I'm just waking up," I growled, climbing down from the bed. I hurried to the mirror and gazed at my reflection in the mirror and I instantly arranged my messy hair before opening the door.
"Susan," I said, "What are you doing here so early?" I asked.
"Will you let me come in first before asking me questions here and there?" Susan asked, pushing Steve aside. She walked into the room, and Steve gently slammed the door behind her.
"What are you doing here?" I asked again as she looked around my room.
"Don't tell me that you're seriously going to save Selene," Susan said as she sat on the bed, sweeping her gaze across the room
"What else can I do to get my mate back? Patiently wait for her to come back? No, I won't do that," I said, standing right in front of her.
"But you know that you're endangering your life if you go to fight Devon," Susan asked, but I scoffed and found her unreasonable
"I won't be fighting him, I'll only reason with him," I said, stating my only strategy
"What? Reason with him?" Susan asked, looking stunned.
"Yes, is there anything wrong with that?" I asked with a slight frown on his face. I was displeased because of the way Susan said her words. "What you're saying is that you don't have faith in me?" I asked.
"It's not about that! Devon is not like every other person that we think we know..."
"I don't care about that bullshit, Susan, and I honestly think that you should mind your business. Don't meddle in my business," I said sternly, but Susan only laughed, and I couldn't comprehend what she found so amusing.
"You're joking, right? Tell me you're joking," Susan said after she got no amusing response from me. The smile on her face slowly vanished and she pushed into my chest.
I didn't flinch. Her strength was no match for my strength. She was just a female Alpha.
"I'm not joking, I'm going to bring my mate back," I uttered
"What do you find in Selene, Steve? I'm a female Alpha like her and it's not like she's more beautiful than me" Susan continued sounding completely unreasonable to me "We ought to be rejoicing and jubilating but here we are talking about reasons why you shouldn't bring Selene back home, I don't need to talk to you about this..."
"Then don't" I cut her off in anger. I was already tired of her ranting. "I won't talk to you about it if you choose not to leave," Susan said sternly
"I honestly can't believe that this is the reason why you disturbed my sleep this early morning," I uttered, walking away from her
"Isn't it enough reason to disturb you, this is a matter of life and death and you can't die all because of Selene," Susan continued "Come to think of it, if you die because of her, she'll continue living her life with no troubles while you'll be six feet"
"Shut your mouth, Susan, I'm more than disappointed in you because you don't have faith in me," I said in a rage, causing Susan to gingerly hold my hand with a sly smile on her face
"It's not about faith, but what if you bring her back? What becomes of me?" Susan asked, causing me to scoff instantly at her words.
"We?" I asked and furrowed my eyebrow
"Yes! We." Susan repeated
"There's nothing like 'we' Susan, yes I know we had a little thing together but that was nothing, wasn't it friends with benefits," I said and before I knew it, I felt a slap on my cheeks and before I could respond to her, the knock on my door caught my attention causing to groan in displeasure
Susan's gaze instantly swept through the room as she sorted for a place to hide. She immediately ran under the bed and I took my shirt that was on the bed, and I swiftly put it on before opening the door for the guards
"Good morning, sir," the guard greeted and bowed slightly in respect.
"Is anything the matter?" I nonchalantly asked.
"The king requests your present in the throne room," He said
"Is that all?" I asked.
"Yes sir," He said before leaving
I slammed the door and Susan instantly hurried out of the bottom of the bed with a frown on his face
"What the hell Steve, dozens of condom packs are under your bed," she abruptly said, but I didn't respond
She took one last glance at me and hissed before exiting the room. I narrowest my eyes and moved over to stand facing my vanity. I gazed at my reflection in the mirror and combed my hair properly before exiting the room, making my way towards the throne room.
The big door of the throne room was pushed open by the guards standing in front of it and I briskly walked toward the king before bowing my head in respect
"Long live my Alpha," I said
"How are you, my dear child?" He asked.
"I'm fine Alpha," I responded
"Terrible news got to me today about a certain wolf that goes by the name Zayne." The Alpha paused. The name rang in my ear thousands of times before I gulped down the saliva in my mouth and asked,
"Want about her Alpha"
"Her body was found in the woods. She committed suicide," The Alpha informed me, and my heart jumped out of my mouth.
"Was it because of me? Oh my goodness, doesn't she have a good life? Why would she choose to end her life" I thought, feeling uncomfortable.
"Where in the woods was she found, my alpha?" I asked while lowering my gaze.
"Deep in the woods, she hanged herself on a tree"
