“You didn’t return my text.” She avoided his gaze and looked out at the clouds as a light blush kissed her face.
Her remark took him by surprise. Though she was trying to hide a smile from her previous mood alone, he’d assumed she wouldn’t speak to him for a little while longer. Even if she had, he hadn’t expected those words to be the first of her choice.
The text message chosen to be the new topic of their resuscitated conversation surged to the forefront of his memory. More guilt ravaged him as he remembered shoving his phone back into his pocket earlier that day. He remembered receiving it while in a boardroom meeting, at the time he’d figured he would reply to it afterwards. No damage done.
“I was very busy.” He replied.
“Too busy to reply to a simple text?” This time when she spoke, she removed her gaze from the clouds outside the window and looked at him with a raise eyebrow.
