Alan and Ezekiel rushed towards the light as it got closer, they were exhilarated when they realized it belonged to a car. Hope appeared in the eyes of the duo as they pushed themselves further towards the light.
The Silik behind them stopped, as if sensing something, it turned around and ran back into the woods.
Alan and Ezekiel didn't notice this since they were more focused on getting to the vehicle.
Their expressions soon changed when the vehicle was flipped into the air, the lights of the vehicle shone on the other side of the road, for just a second, but the duo caught sight of what was behind the vehicle.
They stopped in their tracks, but they were only around one hundred and fifty meters away from it.
The car which was mid-air, soon slammed into the ground, tumbling a few times before stopping around fifty meters away from the duo.
They exchanged glances, before steeling their hearts and running towards the vehicle. This was their only hope of survival at the moment.
Even if they didn't know much about Siliks, they could tell that the ones behind this vehicle were different from the ones behind them. When they got to the van, they hurriedly tried to open the door to the van.
After a few seconds of trying, they managed to open up the door. The front door of the van was sent flying and a figure climbed out from it.
The person was a lady dressed in what looked like a tracksuit.
"Who are you people?" She asked as she came down from the vehicle which was on its side.
"We were being chased by a Silik, so we came towards the light when we saw it." Ezekiel explained.
"Oh." The lady held onto her head, "Right, we are being chased. Where are the scientists?"
"Inside." Alan pointed at the group of people inside the van who seemed to have passed out with blood dripping down the head of a man who held onto a briefcase.
Even with what happened, the man still refused to let go of the briefcase.
The lady looked behind them, seeing how quickly the Siliks were closing in, she waved her hand and a stream of water appeared from nowhere, pouring in the faces of the scientists.
The man with the briefcase was the first to open his eyes, feeling that the briefcase was still in his embrace, he heaved a sigh of relief before struggling out of the van. Of the four people in the van, one of them never opened his eyes. When the lady tried to take him out, she realized that he had been pierced by something at the back of his head; he was dead.
"Veronica, what's the situation?" The man who held onto the briefcase asked after coming out.
"Not good sir, we're surrounded by four upper-level Siliks, I can't defeat all of them on my own." Veronica reported as she stood in front of the man.
"Who are these kids?" The man asked when he saw Alan and Ezekiel.
"I don't know, they said they were being chased by a Silik. Since they're still alive, it must have been a regular low-level one." Veronica reported.
Alan and Ezekiel were confused by the terms the lady used in addressing the Siliks. They didn't know there were upper-level Siliks and regular ones.
"We'll talk about that later sir, what matters now is getting you three to safety." Veronica stopped the man from speaking any further when she realized he was about to ask more questions.
"Three? Where's Karl?" The man asked, shocked.
"Dead." Veronica said calmly while watching the movements of the Siliks.
They hadn't tried to attack yet, just watching them, ensuring that they blocked the escape routes of the humans.
"Where are the weapons, we can at least assist you with them?" The man asked, a little shaky from the Siliks that were staring at them.
Veronica shook her head before taking out a gun, it was a semi-automatic pistol with a blue trigger.
She looked at the shaky scientists, before turning to look at the two youths beside her, "Any of you know how to use one?"
Ezekiel stepped forward, "Yes."
"Good, try not to hit me with it okay. Also, if you do anything funny with the scientists, I'll kill you before you can pull that trigger." Veronica handed the gun over to Ezekiel with this warning.
Ezekiel took the gun, not worried by her warning. He didn't plan on doing anything other than to help her anyway, so why worry.
When Veronica saw his reaction, she nodded secretly.
"You four, stay behind us, don't make any rash movements." She instructed.
Alan moved close to the scientists, unsure of what to do. Ezekiel was just given one of the most valuable items in the world currently, a gun filled with chaos energy bullets, these were the only things other than Awakens that could harm Siliks.
Most Awakened don't use these weapons, only opting to use them when it is necessary.
Veronica attacked the moment she confirmed Ezekiel was ready. She was fully confident in her abilities, hence she wasn't too bothered. The main reason she gave the gun to Ezekiel was so that he could stop any of the Siliks that tried to go close to the scientists while she was occupied.
She created a water dome around them just to be extra safe, before attacking.
Bang! Boom! Bam!
The Siliks shot out light beams from their mouths, destroying the attacks she sent towards them.
Ezekiel held onto the gun tightly, watching the battle from behind. He didn't dare to carelessly shoot since he knew how precious the bullets were.
Bam! Boom!
Veronica managed to send one of the Siliks flying, but she was pushed back in the process, leaving the scientists exposed to the Siliks.
One of the Siliks used the opportunity to charge towards the water dome.
Bang!
Ezekiel pulled the trigger, shooting the Silik that was charging towards them.
Unfortunately… he missed.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Without thinking, he started to release shot after shot at the Silik, forcing it to stop in its tracks. Although the pressure was getting to him, he knew if he carelessly missed his target, he would die.
"This is bad, Veronica can't fight against them on her own, she's not that powerful yet." The man who was holding onto the briefcase assessed the situation with a worried look.
"What can we do to help?" Alan asked.
"Nothing, hopefully, she can persist. Your friend is doing well, but if he continues firing at this rate, and missing, then he's going to be out of bullets real soon." The man replied.
"What?!" Alan exclaimed, scared for Ezekiel's life.
Ezekiel was the only person he had left from their settlement that was still alive, well, that he knew is still alive. He couldn't afford to watch him die.
"Isn't there another gun?" Alan asked, holding onto the shirt of the man.
"Well, there should be one in the van, since there was a guard there, but if your friend attempts to go there, he might be killed before he gets there. Once he's dead, we will all die." The man said.
"Isn't it the same thing if he runs out of bullets?" Alan turned to look at the battle.
Veronica was continuously being pushed away by the three Siliks she was fighting against, so there was nothing she could do. The Silik that was attacking Ezekiel was cautious, making sure not to be hit by the bullets.
Ezekiel has been impressive so far, according to the man's assessment. He had been dodging some of the Silik's energy beam attacks, while also keeping it at bay as well. He had even managed to graze the side of the Silik's left arm with the bullet. For someone who hadn't engaged in such a battle before, he was even beyond impressive.
"Hmm, good point." The man nodded after thinking about Alan's words, "But there's nothing we can do. Leaving this place is like a death sentence, and we might become a distraction to them, let's just watch for now."
Alan turned around and tried to get out of the water dome, and to his surprise, he was pushed back by a mysterious force.
"Damn it, only that lady can remove this thing." He complained while gritting his teeth.
He was forced to watch the battle from the sidelines without interfering, it wasn't like there was any major thing he could do, he just didn't want to watch Ezekiel die before him.
Crash! Boom!
"Ah!..."
The sound of something slamming the ground reverberated across the road, followed by a shout of pain.
When Alan turned to look at the source of the sound, he was appalled when he saw Veronica lying on the floor, injured.
Even though it was in the middle of the night, the moon was hanging high in the sky, and they could see well within a few hundred meters of them.
"Veronica!" The man with the briefcase yelled.
The water dome around them suddenly blinked with a bright light before falling apart.
Bang!
A figure was soon sent flying, crashing into the group who were previously protected by the dome. It was none other than Ezekiel, on his chest was a large claw mark, luckily, it wasn't deep and was more like a graze.
However, that wasn't good news for Alan and the scientists. With Ezekiel out of the way, and Veronica injured, there was no one who could fight against the Siliks anymore.
Veronica managed to stand up, but she was once again sent flying. Ezekiel lost consciousness the moment he was sent flying, so he knew nothing of what was currently going on.
The man with the briefcase panicked, not sure of what to do.
"Sir, what do we do?" Alan asked, frightened by the approaching Silik.
"Nothing, we're dead." The man said, hope leaving his eyes.
One of the scientists took the gun that was in Ezekiel's hand and started firing at the Silik, making it stay away, for now. But he realized to his horror that he was almost out of bullets.
"Sir put yourself together, we still have that." One of the scientists with the man grabbed him, shaking him to get back to his senses.
"But, who's going to use it? And, how can you be sure the person will survive? All the tests we have been conducting have always ended with the patient dying." The man said.
"Besides, none of us here is an Awakened, and Veronica is too busy trying to stay alive." He added.
"What are you talking about?" Alan asked hurriedly.
According to what he heard, there was a chance that they could use something that could help them, so why were they delaying?
"In here lies maybe humanity's greatest hope of fighting against the Siliks, but the issue is that we are not sure if it will work. Well, according to some results we ran, it should be safe, but we aren't certain yet since there isn't a live patient to use it on. Also, it can only be used on an Awakened." The man with the briefcase explained as he pointed at the briefcase.
"Then what are you waiting for? Give it to me." Alan stretched out his hand.
While they were speaking, the scientist using the gun soon ran out of bullets.
The Silik started preparing an energy beam attack on its mouth that it would shoot out any second, yet the man with the briefcase was still contemplating.
"But, you might die. As I said, it hasn't been tested yet. And from what we've deduced, if a none Awakened uses it, they will certainly die." The man warned.
"Do we have a choice? Give it to me." Alan said.
He would die anyway if he didn't use this thing, why not try it?
The other scientist didn't even argue with him, pressuring the man with the briefcase to give the injection to him. This was the only one they had made, and it took them years of theories as well as luck before they managed to make it. If it is truly going to work, but it was wasted on a worthless boy, then the scientists would be kicking themselves, even in their graves.
Well, they wouldn't have a grave if this attack connects.
Alan took the injection from the briefcase, staring at it, he knew his future lay on what happened after he took it.
Just as the Silik was about to shoot out the energy beam, it was grabbed by an extended water hand that dragged it back.
"What are you doing?" Veronica yelled when she saw Alan already injecting himself.
By the time she finished asking her question, Alan had already emptied the content of the syringe into his body.
