After twenty adventurous minutes, the four women found themselves piling into a vegetable cart, heading for the Matsumoto family's estate.
"Oji-san, I can't thank you enough," Midori told the cart driver. It was an elder man who just happened to pass when the four women just escaped from the rioting neighborhood.
"No need to mention it," he said with a bright smile. "I hope that you are all comfortable enough riding on the cart."
The stench emanating from the cart was akin to that of ancient mold. Yet, in their desperate state, they wouldn't have hesitated to board a carriage reeking of fresh manure.
Shouko grew more and more restless the farther they distanced themselves from Ginza that Midori simply had to ask, "What's wrong?"
"Oh, it's just..."
Shouko bit into her lower lip as she carefully raised her doe eyes to meet Midori's.
"I never knew that... I didn't realize that you are the Midori Takigawa."
