Midori looked down from her bedroom window on the second floor, and watched two women leave the mansion in the darkness of the night.
The swaying flame of the oil lamp barely brushed the faces of the two women, but it allowed Midori to see Fumiko and Keiko's faces.
A carriage came to pick them up before leaving as fast as it came. Midori watched for a long time even after the last bit of lighting disappeared, leaving the front garden to be cloaked in utter darkness.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Ojou-sama...? Are you still awake?"
"Yes," Midori moved away from the window. "Come in, Mai-chan."
Mai entered in her sleeping attire, hugging a pillow and a folded quilt to her chest. She looked like a five-year-old child who was seeking refuge in a stormy night.
