Chapitre 1: Web of lies

The clean medical room stood in stark contrast to the colorful world outside. Sunlight streamed in through partially closed blinds, casting irregular patterns on the cold linoleum floor. The room was filled with the subtle hum of medical equipment, a constant reminder of the impending event that would change everything.

As Clara lay on the hospital bed, her body heavy with the weight of being a mother, her thoughts were consumed by a secret she had kept from her dear husband, Daniel. She was on the verge of a betrayal that couldn't be undone—a twist of fate. all because of a carefully guarded secret.

Meanwhile, Helen, the nurse on duty, had already planned her way to exchange the babies, so she was prepared and did everything to avoid mistakes. Clara, on the other hand, had her imagination running wild as she contemplated the choices she had made. "But Daniel would be so disappointed to have a female child," she thought. "I can't give him a female child; I have to provide him with a male heir for his company's sake. I've invested too much in this deception, even paying a nurse to swap babies. I can't back out now. I must proceed with my plan."

Amidst the uncertainty and guilt that plagued Clara's heart, the fetal monitor's rhythmic pulsing on her belly served as a constant reminder of the life growing inside her—a life that should have brought only joy but was now tainted by deceit.

Daniel, oblivious to the shadows that clouded this particular situation, stood by Clara's side. His face radiated a mix of excitement and apprehension as he held her hand, seeking reassurance, unaware of the secrets she harbored.

With a soft tone, Daniel whispered, "Almost there, sweetheart. We're expecting a baby boy soon."

Clara managed a weak smile, her guilt simmering beneath the surface. Daniel's trust in her only intensified the weight of her deception. Hours passed as Clara endured the pain of labor, her thoughts consumed by the intricate web of lies she had woven.

When the moment finally arrived, the medical professionals swarmed the room with practiced efficiency. Clara gave birth to a baby boy, and the room seemed to hold its breath, aware of the recent deception. The baby's cries filled the air, but beneath the surface, tension lingered.

As Clara cradled the newborn, her guilt and uncertainty grew. Her actions had been driven by greed, a desire for a privileged life, and a desire to be loved by her husband even more for giving him an heir, but this innocent child in her arms had no fault; he wouldn't have a childhood with his family. She couldn't help but wonder about the lives she had altered and the child she had given away.

A thought about her daughter, who might be living her best life or her worst life; her actions grew on her even more, maybe postpartum stress, but she couldn't help but think about the daughter she had given away and the future of the girl she had altered.

Clara didn't even get a glimpse of her daughter to know what she looked like; she didn't hear her daughter's heartbeat to avoid connection; everything was discrete and happened so fast. All she could hope was for a better life for her daughter and the grace to love her son like he was from her womb, she thought to herself. It would take time, but in the end, it would be worth it, would it?

The medical team soon resumed their duties, and the room buzzed with anticipation. Clara's secret would follow her throughout her life, and to the grave, no one would know; it was the secret of two people, her and the nurse, Helen. They were casting a long shadow over her family's future—a web of lies they had formed. The lie they had orchestrated has now become an indelible part of their lives from now on. This nurse would only be remembered for her bad deeds.
