Such a young girl had also been lured into this game—the person who sold her the game really did a bad deed!
She must've been given a silver-quality beginner weapon by the system because of her young age, as a way to balance out the game's difficulty.
But if the little girl were left here alone, even with a silver-quality beginner weapon, survival would undoubtedly be very difficult.
The well-fed little girl seemed quite content, and when she saw Song Jian looking at her, she gave him a sweet smile.
"What's your name?" asked Song Jian.
"Ke'er," the little girl hesitated for a moment before replying softly. Quickly she added, "Mommy told me not to give my name to strangers, but you're a good person, Uncle, so it's okay to tell you. Just don't let my mommy know I told you my name."
Song Jian smiled slightly and nodded, then continued to ask, "How much longer until you can leave the game? Check the countdown timer on your attribute screen."
After a moment, Ke'er sighed and said, "More than three hours left."
Song Jian's eyebrows furrowed slightly, his face showing hesitation. The ten-second countdown had already started ringing in his ears, and missing this chance meant he'd have to wait another twelve hours to leave the game.
"I haven't found a safe place yet. I'll wait until I find a safe place before leaving the game," Song Jian finally decided.
Letting the countdown end, Song Jian calmly said to Ke'er, "Let's get out of here first. There's an apocalypse supermarket at Camel Square. It has a lot of things. I'll take you to get a membership card so you can buy lots of tasty food there."
"Really?" Ke'er's eyes lit up, but then she quickly frowned and held her stomach, saying, "I ate too much, now I can't eat anything."
Song Jian hesitated for a moment, hesitated for a while, and reached out for Ke'er's small hand;
Ke'er was startled, then with a smile, she extended her right hand to Song Jian.
The two of them walked together toward the apocalypse supermarket;
By now, the sky was already bright and the sun had risen. Zombies had hidden in dark corners, their attributes halved by this time of day. Even if more than a dozen mutant zombies appeared at once, with Ke'er's addition, Song Jian felt confident that he could take them all out from ten meters away.
Holding Ke'er's hand, the two walked to the edge of Camel Square.
Song Jian looked ahead, his face turning pale. In the center of Camel Square, there were no buildings, just a dried-up fountain;
"No, this isn't right. The apocalypse supermarket was clearly right here," Song Jian said as he stared at the fountain's basin full of debris, unable to believe his eyes.
"Gone, how could it be gone?" Song Jian's face turned a shade paler as he suddenly thought that maybe the apocalypse supermarket was like a random adventure within the game, suddenly appearing and then disappearing, and if he missed the opportunity, the adventure would simply slip away;
Taking a deep breath, Song Jian opened his task panel and, seeing that the task to get the apocalypse supermarket membership card had not disappeared or failed, finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"If it appeared once, then it can appear a second time, and sooner or later, I will complete this task," Song Jian thought to himself.
Looking at the slowly rising sun, a thought suddenly flashed through Song Jian's mind, "Maybe it's because of daylight. The apocalypse supermarket only appears at night. When the sun rises, it disappears and reappears at night."
"Ke'er, the supermarket probably won't appear until night," Song Jian said to Ke'er.
"Then we'll come back tonight. It's just right since my tummy is so full now!" Ke'er said obediently.
Song Jian nodded and began to look around.
"The most important thing right now," thought Song Jian, "is to establish a safe base and then slowly clear the surrounding zombies."
With the post-apocalyptic supermarket here, Song Jian wouldn't leave. Ke'er had about three hours of game time left, and he had to establish a safe house within such a short period of time so that Ke'er could leave safely when her game time was up.
He took out the map and examined it closely. The safe house had to be near Camel Square so he could keep an eye on the post-apocalyptic supermarket.
After looking for a while, Song Jian finally chose a residential neighborhood across from New Garden Residential Area and just past Camel Square, where Ke'er had appeared.
The neighborhood was almost entirely composed of detached villas surrounded by six-story buildings. On the north side of the neighborhood, there was a villa situated at the edge of Camel Square that provided an easy view of the square's center.
Song Jian decided to make this villa his safe house and, pulling Ke'er along, headed for it.
The villa appeared to have been abandoned for a long time. Its exterior walls were covered with withered vines, and the gaps revealed that the windows and doors were all boarded up from the inside with thick planks, not even a sliver of light could penetrate, which meant Song Jian would have to make an extra effort to get inside.
Having circled the villa a few times, he found no way to enter the rooms. Instead, he heard the low growls and thumping of mutated zombies inside; it seemed that zombies were inside the villa and they had detected Song Jian's presence.
Zombies had an abnormal obsession with living beings and once they discovered one, they would relentlessly pursue it. The flesh and blood of the living were like drugs to them;
But when the zombies caught the living and started to gnaw at their flesh, they would also transmit the zombie virus into the living body. Once the virus spread throughout the living body, the mutated zombies would lose interest in the fresh prey they had just captured and would no longer continue feasting, allowing the victim to turn into one of their own kind.
After carefully listening for a while, Song Jian determined that there was only one mutated zombie inside the room, which eased his mind. He guessed that this zombie was probably the original owner of the villa.
The biggest problem now was how to get inside the villa. The villa's original owner had sealed the doors and windows tightly, leaving no gaps.
"It can't all be blocked. There must be an exit. How else could the people inside come out to search for supplies?" Song Jian thought to himself.
It was clear from the thoroughly sealed doors and windows that the villa's owner had survived for quite some time after doomsday struck.
After a thorough search, Song Jian found a ladder more than three meters long in the villa's courtyard, leaning against a tree. Looking towards the villa, there was a glass skylight on the inclined roof of the first floor of the three-story villa, which he hadn't immediately noticed because it was covered in grime due to the passage of time.
"It couldn't possibly be that they enter through that skylight, could it?" thought Song Jian.
He moved the ladder against the villa's exterior wall, and indeed, the ladder was just the right length to reach the roof of the first floor.
Climbing up the ladder to the skylight, he wiped the mud from the glass and looked down to see another ladder directly beneath it, a metal stepladder, which was more stable than the one in the courtyard.
The stepladder was already knocked over, lying horizontally on the floor.
"No big deal, the skylight is less than three meters from the ground. With a bit of caution, one could jump down directly," Song Jian thought to himself.
He gently lifted the handle of the skylight, and it opened. At this height, a regular mutated zombie wouldn't be able to climb up, and the villa's original owner had never locked it.
Inside the living room of the villa, a mutated zombie was continuously ramming the surrounding walls, trying to get out. It had sensed the presence of living humans outside and was eager to feed on their flesh.
Thump—
Song Jian jumped down from the skylight and felt a sharp pain in his feet. Although he had added some agility, his physical condition was still that of an ordinary person. Jumping from over two meters high, his ankles were somewhat unable to take the strain.
Sensing Song Jian's entry, the mutated zombie immediately lunged at him;
