"So, when I first arrived here, I was like in a bad situation, you know? I asked for help and all, but no one came to my aid. Then, an old woman caught me. Said sh*ts like you don't have a watch and all and dragged me somewhere."
She didn't harbor any hatred in her eyes. Not even anger, unlike Leon's experiences. She was simply narrating a part of her story.
"Guess where that somewhere was?"
"Guard Station."
"Yep, exactly," got up from the bed and sat down at the table, positioning herself face to face with Leon, "Luckily, that place was kind of far from where I was.Needless to say, I didn't have the power to shake her off."
After a brief sigh, she continued, "I was lucky. On the way there, she spotted a guard and handed me over to him. He was alone, and that woman was the only one on the street. Then, I purposely tried to struggle, said some sh*ts to steal his time while waiting for that woman to leave."
Pointed at Leon with her right index finger, "The moment we were alone, I screamed, 'long live Rebellious!'"
She burst into a hearty laugh for a few seconds, "He freaked out really bad, you know? He was about to shat on his pants. And, of course, he let me go instantly and took a defensive stance. That's when I made my escape."
"Weeew. I didn't know you were that smart."
"Hmph. I'm clever, alright?"
"You said you tailed him."
"Yes, I did. And?"
"I bet he would remember the devil's face in one second."
"If he could have seen me, that is."
"Did you walk around with a mask?"
Averted her gaze, "Nooo…"
"How did you manage to stay alive for this long?"
"What if I walked like that, huh? Look, nothing happened," gestured herself with her left hand.
"If you do something suspicious, they would apprehend you, you know?"
"I know that much."
"And wearing a mask on the streets is a suspicious action."
"Heh, whatever. Those things happened before, so let's put them aside."
"Sure."
"Before you ask, he is a Level 2. So, we can deal with him."
"So, you are a Level 2?"
"No, but I'm almost there. You and I should be more than enough."
"It's too risky."
"Just listen to me a bit," then glanced at her watch, "It's 9.37 right now. We will leave here at 11.30 to be absolutely sure that no one is around."
He knew that today was Wednesday, one of the prayer days. That's why all he did was nod in front of her wise words.
"Since we will be wearing masks, cameras won't be a problem."
"Hold on a bit. What cameras? Are we leaving from the front gate or something?"
"Yes?"
"What do you mean, 'yes?' Don't you guys have something like an underground path or something?"
"Of course we have. But we can't use it unless it's necessary. Plus, do you think guards would bother to look at the camera records on a perfectly normal day?"
"Well," nodded, "That makes sense."
"Right? On top of that, we won't kill him. We can't kill him. Don't forget our objective."
"We are trying to earn money. And if he dies, his bank account will be blocked. The other guards will rush at us, too. So, we would be f*cked up either way."
"About that, leader said that…" She took a few more seconds to be absolutely sure of what she was going to say, "Leader said that if we kill a guard, we have 2 minutes to run. You know that the moment a guard dies, a signal is sent to their leader, don't you?"
"That's common knowledge."
"Yeah, and seems like those 2 minutes are for preparation and heading out. Best-case scenario 5, worst case 1, so it seems."
In front of such absolute numbers, Leon wasn't amazed or anything. He simply nodded, treating it as if it were obvious. Indeed, it was only natural for them to know at least that much.
In fact, Leon had always thought that Rebellious knew more than what others thought. Well, that was mostly his mother's words, but they were absolute for him.
"By the way, why were we leaving the city? Also, are you sure that he will be alone?"
"Both of them are connected. You were also lucky, you know?"
"What do you mean?"
"Did you think guards were not patrolling around the forest? They, of course, are. And you were lucky to not see one."
"Aha, I see. So, this guy has a shift today," pointed at her with his right index finger.
"Exactly," she also shot one of hers, "I've been tailing this guy for more than two months now. And what I've found is, he has a shift around the forest every second week's Wednesday. Which is today."
At first, Leon thought that she was exaggerating. However, she had the eyes of dead seriousness, like the ones a few minutes ago. She looked like she was sure to her entire existence that what she said was the truth and would happen today.
"You have quite a bit of free time, don't you?"
"Peh, say whatever you want."
"We will faint him and rip him off. I got that part, but how will we take his money? I heard that those are traceable and there's no place to use them," his knowledge that came from the internet kicked in.
"There is one," raised her finger to indicate.
Then, a few seconds passed in silence. She waited for that certain question from Leon, and in turn, Leon awaited her to finish her sentence. It was a total impasse.
"Won't you ask it!?"
"And that place is?"
"The black market."
"Don't be racist."
"Wh-What!?"
"Alright, let's do it."
---
Leaving the border wasn't any different from walking to a random public park in the city. If they were a believer, they would have thanked the Goddess for granting them luck. However, they weren't and stood on the completely opposite side now.
The part they headed to was the edges, the parts that looked at the road. They went a bit deeper, though.
If someone were to look at them from the border, they would think that animals were roaming through the forest. And that was their camouflage.
"This part may also be dangerous. Wouldn't a car passing by see us?"
To answer his question, Triss looked around and locked her eyes on somewhere. It was a stone.
She raised that stone, but not with her hands. She literally made it float around, towards Leon's eyes.
"Already learned telekinesis, huh?"
"Hehehe. I'm good, right?"
"Everyone learns it at Level 1, though."
Tack!
"I was going to teach you, but I won't now."
"Aaah! You hit my head!"
"W-What!? Did you get hurt!? I thought I just touched you!"
"What if I die!?"
Unexpectedly, her eyes turned into a rainy one, "I'm sorry! Please don't die!"
"If you don't teach me, I'll die for real!"
"Alright, I'll teach you! Please don't die on me!"
"Sure," nonchalantly swiped his forehead.
Shock showed itself for a few seconds, following that, "You tricked me!" A little bit of anger.
Lastly, "Don't do it again, okay?" Relief took over her face.
'I only cracked a joke…'
Even Leon can feel the guilt. His little joke turned out to be a big deal. Seeing her teary eyes once was more than enough to soften his heart.
"Sorry. I will try not to do it ever again."
"Shouldn't you say 'I won't do it ever again?'"
"I'm trying not to make promises that I may not honor."
"Honoring promise, you say? Seems like someone likes medieval things."
"Yeah, I do," stopped and added, "To some extent at least."
"Do you have a hobby or something?"
"Reading and playing. Like literally ordinary stuff. What about you? Other than cutting the heads of the guards, I mean."
"Well, I like swimming and some girly stuff."
"Like what?"
"Let's keep it for another day."
Hours followed by hours. They arrived at their current location at 11.55 a.m. It was a 25-minute long road from their hideout to here. However, their mix of slow and quick steps affected that time in a large margin.
Most of the time, their steps were slow, though. In short, they threaded a 15-minute long road in 25 minutes.
When the clock marked 3 p.m., they heard footsteps. Maybe thanks to the mud that had yet to dry up, they could hear a clear squishy sound. Every single step made them step back, one more tree away.
Unaware of what he would be facing in a moment, he lazily kept on forwarding towards the middle-aged guard. His sword was on his right, showing that he was left-handed. And that was about it when it came to the 'know your enemy' part.
Hunters waiting their prey, carefully.
Tack! Tack! Tack!
"Is there someone up there?"
Tack! Tack!
"Alright, come out now."
Tack! Tack!
"Sigh… Fine… I'll make you regret, though."
Pooow!
