Even though they were just a bunch of chess pieces, they created the sensation of a vast army charging.

Hermione's cavalry and chariot units launched a smooth and fluid attack, directly charging Tom's central army.

At this point, Tom had already withdrawn his chariot units, lost the initiative on the flanks, and, worse still, had not finished digging trenches. Consequently, nine hundred foot soldiers faced the onslaught of fifty chariots and two hundred cavalry.

Some foot soldiers attempted to counterattack but were easily crushed. Tom watched as the centurion who had complained earlier attempted a rebellion, only to be shattered by the soldiers on Hermione's chariot, causing his subordinates to scatter.

Tom:...

I'm going to revamp the bishops! Next time she tries to hide on a hill, I'll just magic-bombard it!

Tom's forces were in complete disarray. He watched as his king agilely jumped onto a chariot and swiftly fled the scene. His nine hundred foot soldiers were as good as finished.

By the time Tom retreated to his small hill, there were almost no foot soldiers left. Additionally, Tom found it impossible to replicate Hermione's tactics. Hermione only needed to deploy her infantry to entangle Tom's mobile forces, then let her chariots and cavalry charge through the gaps, securing an easy victory.

"You win," Tom said, watching as his king was knocked over by a hammer. Hermione, satisfied, knocked on the table. "Remember to buy me chocolate."

At this moment, several owls flew in, some with applications for the teaching assistant position and others with fan letters. During Tom's first week, there were countless young wizards coming to his door for autographs, and the daily influx of letters numbered in the hundreds. However, since Tom replied to his fans, informing them of his focus on teaching, the letters had decreased to a few each day. The number of young wizards seeking autographs also noticeably dwindled after Tom signed a large batch of names.

As for teaching, come on, Lockhart managed to handle the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor! Naturally, Tom could too. For students below the fifth year, similar to undergraduates, Hogwarts professors would teach them regardless of talent. Despite Professor Snape disliking Harry and Neville, he still taught them for five years.

For sixth and seventh-year students, it was somewhat similar to graduate school. Professors with the power to choose would stipulate that students needed to achieve a certain grade in the O.W.L. exam to continue studying their course. For instance, Professor Snape required an Outstanding in O.W.L. Potions to continue taking his class. Professor McGonagall asked Tom at the beginning of the school year what grade range he would set.

If Tom wanted to take the easy way out, he could set the grade at Outstanding, ensuring few students would enroll. However, this would also impact the students' future employment opportunities. Defense Against the Dark Arts was not a niche subject; those who wanted to become Aurors needed to excel in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Even those aiming to be healers needed at least an "E" grade in the Defense Against the Dark Arts exam.

Wizarding grades are divided into six categories: O, E, A, P, D, and T, with the first three being passing grades and the latter three being failing grades.

So in the end, Tom set the grade at "E (Exceeds Expectations)" like the other professors. There weren't many students enrolling in each grade—only about ten or so per year.

The N.E.W.T. exams served as a degree certification for Hogwarts graduates applying for positions after graduation, equivalent to Muggle professional certificates on resumes. However, in recent years, Defense Against the Dark Arts professors had been unreliable, so these poor students had to self-study—Lockhart was a genuine fraud, only boasting about himself in front of his books. Lockhart could only provide students with everything except help. Tom was more or less the same; he wasn't qualified to teach the seventh-year students—yet he was definitely better than Lockhart. At least he could do one thing: help them prepare for exams.

Tom, using his identity and connections as Lockhart, sent several letters and managed to obtain the past exam papers for the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. exams. He stayed up all night to go through these questions. He found that the contents of the written exams were quite similar year after year. For example, last year's O.W.L. Defense Against the Dark Arts written exam was about the five characteristics of werewolves—practically a giveaway. His own exam paper had a section on that.

In his experience, the best strategy for the Defense Against the Dark Arts written exam was a barrage of questions. Because the exam didn't require originality, it tested knowledge of dark magic and dark creatures, including their characteristics, distribution, habits, and countermeasures.

Memorizing these details was enough! This was much simpler than Muggle exam questions—magic wouldn't ask you to summarize the historical significance of the invention of Wolfsbane Potion. It would just ask you about the function of the Wolfsbane Potion, with the highest difficulty being how to render it ineffective. These written answer questions were more like multiple-choice questions in current affairs exams.

This was why Hogwarts had a fluctuating Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching staff, but the students didn't experience mass failures.
