Chapitre 8: looking for solutions and finding truths

Amber felt arms wrap around her, offering warmth and comfort. She was surrounded by the strong embrace, and it took some time for her racing heart to calm down. But as the initial shock wore off, anger began to replace fear. She pushed away from the person who held her, frustration in her voice.

"Why didn't you do anything? You promised to protect her, even from your own family. But now your grandmother is implicated, and you've forgotten everything you promised!" she shouted, her voice filled with anguish.

Caleb's face showed the struggle he was facing as he tried to explain himself. "I didn't forget, Amber. I'm doing my best to get her out of this, but the family whose car she crashed into is very rich and powerful. It's not that easy."

Amber's eyes narrowed with distrust. She couldn't believe the situation unfolding before her. Her voice turned cold as she uttered, "I don't believe you."

Desperation washed over Caleb as he pleaded, "Amber, please. I'm trying to protect her. Trust me."

Amber's anger began to wane, and she finally hugged him tightly, her voice barely a whisper, "Don't let go of me... of us. I'm so tired."

Caleb reassured her, "Then let's go home."

He gently led Amber to his car, where she soon fell asleep. Caleb carefully carried her inside his apartment, tucking her into a spare room. Cole had already been sent to his father's care. Caleb then made a call to David, his loyal friend and confidant, to discuss the situation.

...

Morning broke with soft rays of sunlight filtering into Caleb's apartment. Amber stirred, her mind slowly waking from a restless sleep. She wondered where she was before the realization hit her: she was at Caleb's place. It wasn't the first time she had stayed over, but this time was different.

Getting out of bed, she made her way to the kitchen, her steps unsure. She poured herself a glass of water, her thoughts heavy with concern. When she turned around, she was startled, causing her to spill the water and choke on it. Caleb had been sitting there, deep in thought.

She managed to say, "What are you doing, just sitting like that?"

Caleb, with a distant look in his eyes, replied, "I was thinking."

Amber's worry for Lilian overtook her as she asked, "Is it about Lilian? Is it that hard to get her out?"

Caleb sighed and answered, "Yes, it's complicated. But I'm doing everything I can. I have a meeting with the lawyer today, and I'll be back soon."

"Okay," Amber replied, her concern evident in her eyes.

As Caleb left, Amber was left to her thoughts, worried about the uncertainty that hung over her sister's fate.

...

Hours later, as the day progressed, Caleb returned to his office. His mind was heavy with the weight of the situation, and he looked to David for answers.

"Did you get it?" Caleb asked as he entered his office.

David nodded, "Yes, the cup was found inside the car, and if that was the only thing she had to eat or drink, it appears that your grandmother set her up. Traces of alcohol were found, suggesting that the drink was spiked. The family she crashed into is the Prince family, and they have connections in the judiciary. They've fast-tracked her case."

Caleb's frustration was evident as he muttered, "Shit."

David, now concerned, said, "You need to make a decision soon, Caleb."

Caleb knew he was running out of time, but he couldn't act without his father and grandmother's support. His mind raced as he contemplated the complex web of power and influence his family was entangled in.

...

Amber was still awake when Caleb returned home that night. She sat on the couch, holding a book that she wasn't really reading. Her eyes seemed to gaze through the pages, lost in thought.

Caleb approached her, gently prying the book from her hands and placing it on the table. He held her hands, his voice soft as he said, "Hey, come back to me."

Amber's eyes blinked in recognition, as if she had just returned from a distant place. "Hi," she responded, her voice distant.

Caleb asked, "You okay now?"

Amber nodded slowly, her eyes filled with concern as she inquired, "Have you heard anything about the case?"

Caleb sighed, "No, not yet. But her hearing is scheduled for tomorrow."

Amber was taken aback. "But it's just one day away?"

Caleb explained, "I know, but the Prince family used their connections to expedite the hearing."

Amber nodded in understanding. "Can I attend?"

Caleb replied, "Yes, you can, but I want you to promise not to talk to anyone, okay? Don't engage with anyone at all."

Amber assured him, "I promise. Who would I even talk to, anyway?"

"Good. Now, go to sleep. You need to rest," Caleb urged.

Amber reciprocated the concern, saying, "You, too. You've got dark circles, you know. It makes you look less handsome."

Caleb chuckled, "Really?"

Amber grinned, teasing, "Yeah. Don't you know it's one of your redeeming qualities? I don't want my sister to marry an ugly person."

Caleb's laughter filled the room as he replied, "Well, I guess I'll have to take better care of myself, then. Go to sleep. We'll talk more tomorrow."

As Caleb walked away, he couldn't help but feel the weight of the decisions he had to make. He was torn between his loyalty to his family and his desire to protect Lilian. The evidence he had found was crucial, but he feared the consequences it might bring.

  ...

The next morning, after Caleb had left to attend to some matters before the court hearing, a sharp knock echoed through the apartment. Amber, still concerned about the impending hearing, answered the door. To her shock, it was Caleb's grandmother, Mrs. Aurora, who stood on the other side.

Amber, caught off guard, managed to maintain her composure. She knew it was important not to disrespect Caleb's grandmother, no matter how angry or frustrated she felt.

"Good morning, Mrs. Aurora," Amber greeted her politely, though her voice betrayed a hint of tension.

Mrs. Aurora, with an unsettling smile on her face, replied, "Good morning, dear. I came to see you, specifically."

Amber, trying to hide her unease, gestured for her to enter the apartment. The atmosphere in the room grew tense as they faced each other, each trying to maintain a facade of civility despite the underlying conflict.

"Please have a seat," Amber offered, gesturing to the living room.

Mrs. Aurora accepted the offer, sitting down with an air of calculated grace. She examined Amber for a moment, her eyes sharp and calculating, as if trying to gauge her intentions.

Amber, while deeply wary of Mrs. Aurora, remained respectful. She couldn't help but wonder about the purpose of this visit and what Caleb's grandmother might have in mind, especially considering the impending court hearing. The air in the room seemed heavy with unspoken words and hidden agendas, as both women navigated the delicate balance
