I gave the bathroom door a few light knocks; they were loud enough that Ruith would hear me if he hadn't fallen asleep in the bath but also quiet enough to ignore if he just wanted to relax on his own for a while. 

But then his soft voice came from behind the door, inviting me in, and I practically raced inside, desperate to help Ruith in any way I could. I entered with my eyes closed, which earned me a breathy chuckle from my friend that bounced around the walls of my heart. His amusement was weak, his soft laugh not even more than a wheeze despite the few hours it'd been since Nell had cut the bullets from his shoulder.
