Max waited silently, allowing Kitty to explain without interruption. Kitty quickly continued apologetically, "I previously rescued a Mutant from a local gang, but she was captured again. I have to find a way to rescue her again. Tell me the address, and I will come to you after saving her."
"No need. The person you mentioned has already been rescued by us. It was because of her that we learned of your presence here," Max said with a smile.
Kitty was taken aback. What a coincidence!
"Where is she?" Kitty asked.
"She's gone. The gang boss is dead. I hope she's lucky enough not to be caught by others."
"Alright, let's go then."
With that, the matter was resolved by coincidence. Kitty quickly packed her things and followed Max as they left.
Back at the hotel, Esme took the initiative. "I'll ask if there is a room available."
It didn't take long for Esme to return, still holding the key in his hand. "Coincidentally, you checked out the room next door," Esme said.
"It's too early. Let's rest first. We'll return to Atlanta tomorrow morning," Max said, handing the key to Kitty.
Then they went back to their rooms to rest.
Max took a shower first. When he came out, he saw Lorna getting up to go in.
After a while, Lorna emerged, wrapped in a bath towel, and lay down on the bed.
The faint fragrance made Max a little restless. He moved closer to Lorna, who was facing her back, but Lorna didn't respond.
Just as Max was about to get closer, Lorna suddenly turned around. Before Max could react, Lorna grabbed his arm and straightened his head, resting it on her arm and tucking it in her arms.
"Don't talk, don't think about anything, I just want this," Lorna said softly.
Max was stunned. He turned over and hugged Lorna with his other arm.
They could hear each other's heartbeats.
The regular heartbeats grew faster and faster, as if urging them on. The Roar of the two couldn't help but speed up slightly. Lorna slowly raised her head to look at Max. His eyes in the dark were like burning flames that made her want to come closer.
As Max's head lifted incrementally, Lorna sensed the heat radiating from him, igniting a warmth within her.
"Are you okay?" she asked, noticing the sudden noise above them. Startled, they separated, spotting a head briefly appearing on the wall.
It was Kitty.
Max rapped on the wall, prompting Kitty to emerge from it.
"Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to ask if I should contact Bobby. I didn't realize... you two were resting so early," Kitty apologized.
"No need to bother Bobby for now. Our priority is finding the professor," Max responded, a hint of frustration evident in his tone.
"Understood. I'll let you get back to your rest. The soundproofing here is good anyway, so you won't disturb me," Kitty assured before retracting into the wall once more.
"Damn, that soundproofing isn't as effective as they claim. I heard everything last night," Max muttered, but Lorna had already turned away.
Their previous intimacy seemed to have dissipated, and Max sensed that Lorna wasn't in the mood to continue.
With a resigned sigh, Max embraced Lorna from behind, attempting to rekindle the moment, but she remained unresponsive.
"Let's get some sleep," he murmured softly.
The night passed without further incident, and the next morning, Kitty and Esme appeared, with Kitty offering an embarrassed apology.
"Let's go," Lorna interjected, not wanting to dwell on the matter. Esme exited the room, and the four of them entered the dimensional space, heading to the car to return to Atlanta.
This time, Lorna opted to sit in the back with Esme, while Kitty occupied the passenger seat.
To be honest, Max regrets finding Kitty so soon. If he stayed a few more days, he might have had the opportunity to spend time alone with Lorna. Going back now, he fears there will be no chance for that.
As Max expected, after returning to Atlanta, Lorna headed back to the underground base alone, not giving him any chance for private moments.
Max drove Kitty and Esme home. No one expected them to return so soon, and bringing back Kitty surprised everyone. Kitty, having lived there for three months, was familiar with Viper, Yukio, Lauren, and Blink, and they quickly got reacquainted.
"Any news from Phoebe?" Max asked Esme while watching Kitty and the others chat, curious about Kitty's experiences since leaving.
Esme shook her head, "Not yet. It seems they plan to catch more Mutants before sending them to the concentration camp. In the past few days, Mutants have been sent to the safe house."
"Any thoughts?"
"Wait!" Esme suggested. "If someone comes to retrieve them, they will know the location of the concentration camp. When we save people, we won't reveal the camp's location."
"Also, it coincides with an assignment for Kitty. I hope Professor X can contact her soon," Max added.
"Why are you looking for Professor X? If you let Professor X and the X-Men join, your benefits will be much less," Esme curiously inquired.
"If by benefits, you mean their gratitude? Let's forget it. I don't have a clear goal to expand the team, nor do I believe their gratitude can bring any substantial benefits," Max explained. His motive for involving Professor X was clear – to maximize the destruction of the Sentinel project. If things go in an undesirable direction, having Professor X close would be convenient for him to act.
"I've asked Blink to follow you. Tomorrow, you'll go out with Kitty, and try to have Kitty embrace the X-Men identity as much as possible."
"Don't worry, I know what to do."
Early the next morning, Kitty, Esme, and Blink went out. Esme gathered information, Blink handled the transportation, and Kitty took charge of the rescues. Together, they thwarted several Sentinel Secret Service arrest plans and even liberated numerous people from the resettlement center.
Gradually, the name "X-Men" began to appear more frequently in the news.
