0.58% Apocalypse - Zombie Evolution System / Chapter 3: Hunting

Chapitre 3: Hunting

With newfound motivation, he continued his hunting. His current speed was too slow, and he could only rely on this "waiting for rabbits" method. Although the efficiency was not high, it was still faster compared to other zombies.

On the ninth floor, where Shaun resided, there were four households, and the one next to him was a young couple. They had just gotten married and were both working hard for their careers, expecting their fulfilling and sweet life to continue indefinitely. But who knew that the apocalypse would erupt so suddenly!

It was a weekend, and the couple finally had some rest time. The man was playing a computer game when suddenly an unprecedented bright light burst outside the window, and he couldn't help but close his eyes tightly. Fortunately, the intense light quickly subsided, replaced by a strange red glow that covered the entire earth. Before he could think, he heard a scream from the kitchen.

He rushed to the kitchen to see what had happened, only to find his wife lying on the floor, convulsing, and undergoing strange changes. Panicked, he tried various methods to help her, but nothing worked. Just as he was about to call for an ambulance, his wife suddenly stood up.

Seeing the terrifying and ghastly appearance, completely different from his usually beautiful wife, he stood stunned in place.

Roar!

A hoarse sound came from her, and at this moment, the wife, who had been preparing lunch, now saw him as her lunch.

"Help me!" The man shouted in extreme fear, continuously evading inside the house. Fortunately, the "wife's" movements were slow, and she couldn't catch up with him.

Finally, he opened the door and rushed out. He wanted to escape and headed straight for the elevator. However, to his surprise, there was someone else waiting at the elevator entrance—a student, it seemed, with a slightly hunched back.

As he watched the elevator doors open, the person didn't enter. Instead, they entered the elevator ahead of him. Just as he was about to greet the person to enter, he froze.

Shaun was equally surprised. He had been extremely disappointed as his hunting had once again failed, but suddenly, a prey had willingly walked into his trap.

The two of them gazed at each other tenderly, just one glance felt like eternity.

If Shaun's mouth didn't have dripping blood, and this man's face didn't turn pale, this would have been a beautiful scene.

"Ah!" The man's voice was hoarse, filled with extreme fear. He could never have imagined that a zombie would be waiting for the elevator!

"What the hell is this thing?" Shaun's mouth slightly cracked open, making him look even more monstrous and terrifying. He raised his hands and completely blocked the elevator door.

As the zombie slowly approached, the man's will to survive reached its peak. He rushed forward, trying to knock down the zombie and escape.

But Shaun was faster. Taking advantage of the man's daze, he pounced on him like a hungry wolf.

The man screamed, but it was all in vain. Although the zombie's movements were slow and its body stiff, its strength was more than three times that of an average person. Once it had a hold on someone, the outcome was almost certain.

The same bloody scene replayed inside the elevator as the man's neck bled profusely, and his screams gradually subsided.

Shaun spat out the flesh in his mouth. The instinct of the zombie virus seemed not to be about consuming flesh but spreading the virus and infecting others.

"Ding! The host has successfully infected one person, evolution points +10!"

Shaun dragged the body out of the elevator and casually threw it on the ground, then closed the elevator doors again.

Meanwhile, a female zombie slowly walked out from a door. Shaun guessed it must be the man's wife, whom he had scared away.

Shaun made a face at the female zombie, but she ignored him and began to roam slowly, looking for humans to infect.

The rest of the day passed slowly as Shaun waited. He thought it was a seamless plan, but other people were not fools. When facing a crisis, no one took the elevator. People returned to their homes, and the number of those taking the elevator decreased. Moreover, the elevator's interior was now filled with blood stains, so no smart person would take it.

In one day, he infected two more people, bringing his evolution points to 40/100.

To reach the next stage, he needed to infect six more people, which worried Shaun.

As the escaping humans returned home, the number of people taking the elevator would undoubtedly decrease further. Moreover, the elevator's interior was filled with blood stains, and no sensible person would take it anymore.

He had to come up with other hunting methods!

Shaun went to the window, where the outside was still bathed in a layer of red light. He slowly looked up, wanting to see the sky. What shocked him was the absence of the usual sunlight. Instead, a blood-red sun hung high in the sky, casting an eerie crimson glow over the world, adding a touch of gore to this apocalyptic scene.

The once bustling streets were now desolate and in ruins, with countless private cars stuck on the roads. There was not a single living person in sight, only the stumbling footsteps of the zombies roaming around.

Dried bloodstains stained the car windows, roads, and guardrails. A breeze blew, causing newspapers and leaves to fly around, making this apocalyptic scene even more distressing.

This was the end of humanity, but the heyday of the zombies!

Shaun stared at the blood-red sun, propping up his chin with his hand, contemplating the situation. He could confirm that he had been hunting for at least ten hours today, and it was now likely deep into the night.

"This is an eternal blood sun!" he muttered.

Suddenly, the door beside Shaun was forcefully opened, and a figure rushed towards him in panic, emitting frightened screams.

Unexpectedly, there was still someone who came knocking on his door?

Shaun's eyes brightened, and with unsteady steps, he looked coldly at the approaching person, his mouth slightly agape, ready to pounce on them.

But at that moment, a yellow-haired dog burst out from nowhere and tackled the person to the ground. Its sharp teeth were dripping with saliva, and it immediately tore into the person's flesh.

A large amount of fresh blood gushed out, and the yellow-haired dog seemed to be enjoying its meal, its eyes filled with violence and frenzy.

Shaun was slightly stunned, and then he turned and walked away, as graceful as ever.

"A two-meter-tall dog! What the hell is this monster?" he thought.

Shaun was relieved that the dog was only interested in fresh blood and paid no attention to him. He stumbled back to his home, looking quite peculiar, and carefully closed the door...

"I didn't expect this world to be so dangerous. I need to evolve as soon as possible!"

"Only 60 more evolution points needed to reach the next level, and my strength will definitely increase!"

"I have to think of another way."

Shaun began to ponder. Although he had hunted for a day, he didn't feel the slightest fatigue. Apparently, this was the advantage of being a zombie.

"Would you love me again if you had a chance to start over..."

A piece of music suddenly played, and Shaun was slightly stunned as his phone rang.

He walked over with staggering steps, and as a zombie, his vision had been greatly weakened. Nevertheless, he finally saw the caller ID.

"????112"

He stood still for a moment, feeling somewhat dazed.

After ringing for a while, the call was finally hung up.

He wondered if there was still a signal in the world?

He looked at the phone again and found that there was a weak signal with only one bar.

"Has the global communication system not collapsed yet?"

Staring at the phone, a sudden plan came to his mind - a good idea.

He tried to open the browser, but his fingers were stiff and couldn't bend. However, he managed to operate the phone with both hands, accomplishing what would normally take a few minutes.

"Emergency recording... download..."

After half an hour, he finally completed what would have taken others a few minutes to do. He looked at the recording on his phone, amazed by his newfound intelligence - at least for a zombie.

At this moment, a zombie stretched out his right hand, holding a phone, and walked out with a staggering gait. Unfortunately, no one was there to witness this bizarre scene.

Shaun shook his head slightly, looking around, but he couldn't see the monstrous yellow-haired dog. He felt relieved.

In this building, there were four households, three of which had already fallen victim to the apocalypse, leaving only one last household.

Shaun arrived at their doorstep and struggled for a long time before finally pressing the play button on his phone.

"Help! Can anyone save me..."

The recording from the phone played, although it sounded strange, no one would have noticed at this time.

After all, no one would be playing a recording in such a situation.

Meanwhile, Shaun's head began to lightly knock on the door, as he couldn't bend his arms to knock properly. The rhythmic knocking made it sound like someone was urgently seeking help.

"Who's there? Who's outside?"

A man's voice came from inside the house, filled with suspicion.

Outside, Shaun continued to repeat the desperate cries for help, the rhythmic knocking, and his raised arms coincidentally blocking the peephole, while the recording of the frightened plea played incessantly on his phone. If anyone had witnessed this scene, they would have mistaken it for a genuine cry for help.

"Who is it? Show yourself!" The man's voice was filled with bewilderment.

But Shaun continued his bizarre act, using his head to knock on the door.
