The interior of the Adventurer's Guild did not match its simple exterior. Upon entering the building, the reception area encompassed the entire first floor. The temperature of the room was perfect. Light fixtures were installed along the four walls and stone pillars supporting the second floor.
The walls were also decorated with magnificent weapons and paintings of grandiose individuals and battles.
Throughout the floor, there were seating areas, some with highly luxurious sofas, others with beautifully crafted wooden tables and chairs.
In the center of the room was a beautiful square wooden reception area, with workers manning each side. I could see a few of the seating areas were occupied by people lounging around, with servers attending to them. As I proceeded towards the center, the eyes of all the lounging people focused on me.
The receptionist I approached was a beautiful young woman with dark hair. She was well endowed and wore a simple black uniform, matched by the other receptionists.
"Good evening, sir. How can I help you?" She asked, unfazed by my appearance.
"I would like to have a finding performed on me. I believe that I am blessed." I answered.
The room got even quieter as everyone's interest was piqued and they tried to discreetly observe.
"Of course, sir. We'll be happy to arrange that. There is a fee of one gold if your finding does not identify you as blessed. Do you understand and accept those terms?" She asked, excitement evident in her eyes.
"I understand and accept."
"If you would please wait here for a moment, I will prepare a room upstairs for your finding."
When she returned, I followed her upstairs, which was just as ostentatious as the first floor, and into a small room. In the center of the room was a scrawny young man in a robe seated at a circular table. On the table was a large circular orb on a pedestal.
"Please have a seat." The man said while gesturing to the chair across from him.
As I sat, the receptionist took her leave.
"May I ask what makes you believe you are blessed?" The man inquired.
"I have shown to possess great strength. The captain and vice-captain of the guard recognized this as well and believe me to be blessed."
The man's eyes widened at my answer.
"If those two recognize it, then it must be so, seeing as how they are both blessed themselves." He said. "Please place your hands on the orb and I will perform the finding."
I did as he asked, and he placed his hands on the orb as well. I felt a surge of mana and the orb started glowing. The man stared at the orb, then jumped out of his chair in exclamation.
"T-that, that's impossible!" He frantically glanced between the orb and me, excitement and fear playing in his eyes.
"Please forgive me sir! I must ask for assistance!" He said and rushed out the door.
Uh oh. I wonder what he saw.
The man returned shortly after with an older well-dressed gentleman in tow.
"My deepest apologies, sir." The older man said. "It seems our mage is at a loss for words at what he's seen. Do you mind if I perform the finding to verify his results?"
"By all means." I replied.
I repeated the finding with the older man, who like the mage, was dazed by what he saw. I really want to know what they're seeing.
"Well sir?" The mage asked excitedly. "Did you see what I saw?"
The question snapped the older man out of his reverie, and he looked at me.
"My deepest apologies sir!" He said, standing and bowing. "I will provide you your results now."
He filled out the parchment and handed it to me.
Strength – 20
Endurance – 20
Agility – 19
Willpower – 20
I wonder why they're so tense right now. It's just my stats.
"Is there a problem with my finding?" I finally asked.
"NO!" They answered simultaneously.
The older man cleared his throat and explained.
"Blessed individuals have stats above a total of 50 points. There are some that have total stats over 60 but those are far and few between. A total over 70 however…" He said, wonder filling his eyes.
The mage excitedly said, "The last known individual was the first king himself!"
Ah, so my total stats being over 70 is a miracle. That also explains their sudden reverence.
"What do these stats actually mean?" I asked. "I'm afraid I don't understand what the standard is."
"Oh, I'd be more than happy to tell you!" The mage said. He then launched into a lecture on stats and their effects.
Essentially, stats were multipliers. Most people had stats between 5-10 points for each category with 10 being a multiplier of 1.
So, if someone had a stat of 5 for strength, they would get a multiplier of 0.5, or half the strength of someone with a 10.
These differences in stats can be overcome by training and dedication, to an extent. For example, if someone had a strength stat of 5, but became a super body builder, they could be stronger than the same person who did nothing with a stat of 10. If they both were body builders however, the higher stat person would always be stronger, because the multiplier is in his favor.
In my case, with a strength stat of 20, I naturally had twice the strength of the average man. If I became a super bodybuilder, like Chad, then the multiplier would kick in for my trained body.
The only stat that didn't exactly work the same way was willpower. Most people had a willpower of about 5. At a willpower of 10, they got mana.
Continuous increases of willpower by 10, increased the amount of mana each person had, which matches my growth of 50 MP to 100 MP at 20 willpower.
The difference between someone with 10 and 15 willpower, was their sensitivity to mana and their control over it. Anyone with a willpower between 1 and 9 had no mana and therefore no control over it, but they did have different levels of mana sensitivity.
Strength Effect: Increases raw power and muscle strength.
Endurance Effect: Increases durability causing tougher skin and stronger bones.
Agility Effect: Increases reactionary time and flexibility.
Willpower Effect: Increases magical capacity and mana every 10 points.
"Most blessed will focus and train their body on the highest stats they have. The captain of the guard for example has an emphasis on Strength and Endurance. He spends much of his time training his body." The mage continued.
"I understand now. I thank you for the information." I said while rising from my seat. "Is there anything I need to do at this point then? Anything else I need to know?"
"Well sir, that depends on your intent from here on." The older man replied. "If you wish to be employed by a noble house, or serve the kingdom, we can facilitate that and ensure you are treated with all the respect you deserve. If, however, you wish to become an adventurer, we can provide you with the needed documentation to certify your standing."
"Hmm, can I take some time to consider the options?"
"Of course, sir! Take as long as you'd like! Would you be open to me sharing your total stats with the local lord and nobility? This may allow you to gain insight into the offers of the kingdom as you weigh your decision." He suggested.
"Am I not allowed to join the kingdom if I become an adventurer?"
"You are absolutely allowed to." He clarified. "Some blessed become adventurers to increase their fame and worth, then join later for better positions. Others have no want for the life of nobility and instead adventure for the battle and fame."
I offered my thanks to the two of them after clarifying a few more things and taking my leave. Turns out the older man was the guild master, whose name was Gerald. He requested that I ask for him specifically when I returned with a decision, and he would ensure I was taken care of.
Everyone on the first floor was very excited to see the guild master fawning over me on my way out.
Thanks for reading!
Also please leave a review or comments about my writing! This is my first foray into literary writing (not actually sure if this counts) so feedback would be much appreciated.
