How had I not seen any of that coming?

I was pacing in the bathroom, crying quietly so no one could hear. Royce’s parents really were as bad as he made them out to be. I couldn’t believe it. I’d managed to stand up for myself, but that adrenaline had evaporated. I couldn’t summon it back, so I stayed quiet while the three argued.

I shouldn’t have agreed to go to his parents for dinner. Who was I kidding? Every time they asked a new question, and every time I felt like I was being interrogated, I felt like I was shrinking. His parents made me feel so small in such a short time. I was shaking from either rage or fear. The way they attacked Royce and me and held nothing back made me so angry.

My heart broke as I realized this was what Royce had been dealing with since Kit died. The loss of their daughter turned them into cynics. But they had one other kid. Royce didn’t deserve the treatment from them.

No wonder he didn’t want to come here.
