Chapitre 20: Frames

Davian rushed to the kitchen immediately he heard Silvia's screams. His eyes were like saucers when he saw that his kitchen island was now a raging volcano, with fire like lava burning everything it came in contact with.

Silvia was behind it, close to the sink and it was like she was hypnotized by the fire because she couldn't move an inch.

His phone fell off his hand hitting the floor as he rushed towards where the extinguisher was. It was hanging right at the corner of one of the kitchen walls. He collected it and put out the fire immediately.

He dropped the extinguisher abruptly and turned to Silvia. She looked up at him, fear and guilt in her eyes for the first time since he has been around her. He held her cheeks.

"Are you okay?" he asked. His heart had leaped out his rib cage the moment he saw the fire and Silvia standing unmoving close to it, as if she was traumatized by the sight of fires, or was it just from shock?

He thought of what Mr. Reyes would do to him if anything happens to her, if she gets hurt.

"Are you hurt?" he added, his hands went to hers.

"Ouch," she winced in pain as she freed them from his hold.

She was hurt. "Were you burnt by the fire?" he asked. She started to move away.

"No...the microwave," she replied.

His thumb and index fingers held the bridge of his nose in between his eyes as he sighs in frustration. He let go.

"Tell me you didn't remove the breads with your bare hands," he inquired. Her silence just answered his question.

"Who? Just which straight thinking human being, no matter how much you lack the knowledge of cooking, will remove something from the microwave oven with their bare hands, without wearing microwave gloves?!" he scolded her.

"Huh?! And they were even right here, right here!" he added as he points to the gloves close to the sink.

"I had no idea the heat could burn someone, I thought..." she tried to defend herself.

"You thought what huh? I leave you with simple tasks, simple tasks for few minutes and you almost burnt down my apartment!" he continued.

"Don't you yell at me, Mr. Randell. I never wanted to come here in the first place," she yelled back.

"Oh, so you are blaming me now. You're really so good at turning the blame away from yourself," he responded.

"Yes. Because if you hadn't brought me here, all these wouldn't have happened," she stated angrily.

He didn't respond and just picked up the extinguisher, putting it back to its place. He also picked up his phone, the screen was smashed badly.

"Why are you so mad? If it's about the phone, I'll get you a new one tomorrow. I'll get interior technicians to fix up your kitchen tomorrow," she elaborated. He turned sharply at her, that dislike he has always had for her now visible in his eyes.

"I can't believe I almost forgot how annoying it was to put up with you. Everything is all about money to you, isn't it?!" he pointed out.

"You haven't even apologized for almost burning down my kitchen," he added and scoffed, really pissed.

His eyes gazed at her palms again, he walked over to her and grabbed her hand gently.

"Hey, what are you doing?!" she said.

"Let's tend to your palms before they get infected," he said but she withdrew her hand from him.

"I'm fine! I don't need your help. I'll do it myself," she retorted. He shook his head and grabbed her hand again.

"Let go would you?" she responded but he continued to drag her to the sink.

"I said let go," she tried to free her hand from him, it was only adding to the pain.

"Shut up, Silvia. You're way too stubborn," he said and placed her hands in the sink. He turned on the tap, it sting at first but she felt as the pain reduced gradually.

He opened the fridge and brought out an ice pack, he turned off the tap and held her hands placing the ice pack on them. It reduced the pain and stinging even more.

"Go seat at the sitting room, continue to place the ice on your palms while I clean up here and see if I can warm up some instant noodles in the fridge," he said. She walked away to the sitting room.

Davian sighed, he tried to turn on the gas cooker after cleaning it up but it was damaged. He brought out an electric cooker from one of the cabinets and plugged it.

Then he opened the fridge and collected two packages of already-made instant noodles. Soon it was all warmed up, but before he served it he first of all went into his room and collected an healing ointment for bruises and some bandages.

He walked to the sitting room and found her sitting on one of the couches, the ice pack still on her palms.

"Let me apply this ointment," he said and squatted in front of her.

He collected the ice pack and placed it on the table, then he started applying the ointment as he blew air with his mouth on her palms. It gave her a tingling and soothing feeling.

Why was he taking care of her? Just a moment ago he was fuming with anger at her but here he was, the same person tending to her bruises. She tried to figure him out, but it was only giving her a headache.

He bandaged her palms when he was done applying the ointment.

"The bandages will help it to heal faster," he stated.

"I apologize," he heard her say. His eyes met hers. "For what happened earlier," she added.

"(Sighs) It's okay. Will you be able to eat with your bandaged palms?" he asked.

"Or should I feed you?" he added. Blood rushed to her cheeks.

"No, I'll manage," she replied.

"Okay," he said and went to get the noodles, also taking along with him the ointment, bandages and the used ice pack.

When he came back with their bowls of noodles and water on a tray. She wasn't sitting down on the couch anymore but was standing close to the TV where some of their picture frames were. She was even holding a frame.

"Ahem," he fake coughed as he dropped the noodles on the table, Silvia too also dropped the frame. It was a picture of Davian's father, Davian looked so much like his father, like a photocopy.

"Sneak peeping at my photos, aren't you?" he smirked.

"I didn't mean to look without permission," she defended herself.

The photos just caught her attention, though that of his mother was there, but especially the ones of his father, baby Davian, him as a little boy and a hottie teenager, he was absolutely stunning and adorable.

"It's okay," he said and picked up one of his father's.

"You look so much like your father," she said. He didn't ask her how she was so sure the man in the picture was his father, it was obvious.

"I never got to meet him," he said. He can't help but feel guilty sometimes, because he reminds his mother so much of her late husband, reminding her over and over of the pain of losing him, even though she doesn't say it out.

Silvia looked at his young photos again.

"How old are you now?" she tried to change the topic.

"Twenty nine. You?" he replied also wanting to change the topic.

"Twenty seven," she replied.

"Let's eat now, shall we?" he said and she nodded. He sat on the floor folding his long legs in a meditating manner. She joined him, facing him. He showed her her bowl and glass of water, they said a small benediction before they started eating.

It tasted nice, she must say.

"Thank you," she said when they were done.

"For the meal," she added and he nodded.

Feeling too tired to stand up, he pushed the tray of dishes aside and leaned his back on the couch. She joined him.

"Are you feeling sleepy yet?" he asked her.

"No," she replied.

"Okay, let's watch a movie together. But sorry there's no popcorn," he said.

"It's okay," she replied. He collected the TV remote and turned on the TV. He switched to several channels before they finally found a movie they both agreed to watch.

It wasn't even up to ten minutes of the movie when she felt something heavy land on her shoulders. She turned her head slowly, it was Davian. He was already fast asleep, sleeping so soundly and so comfortably on her shoulders.

'And he said he wasn't feeling sleepy,' she thought.

His scent and the aroma of his hair shampoo wafted across her nose. She was tempted to lean forward at his hair as she inhaled more of his scent.

She was so stiff, not wanting to wake him up. The only thing that could be heard were the low sounds from the TV but to her, it was his steady heartbeats and his breathing rhythm as his chest and body rose and fell.

She joined him soon, sooner than she had expected as she leaned on his head for support.
