Chapitre 19: Interview

Completing the tests was super easy. They were asking how to do some multiplications and divisions, nothing that I was unfamiliar with. They also asked me to analyze some news articles, one of them was even about me, then write an article of my own.

With the tests completed I was able to spend my time in music class with Mr. Gram and practicing my music. I focused on 'Troublemaker' because that would be the first song I would be singing for the talk shows.

Mr. Gram helped me practice as well, grabbing his guitar and playing with my clones as I sung. Even though he didn't have to, it was still fun to play with him. I hadn't seen him play with any other students before, so seeing that he was helping me was a nice feeling.

When other students came in to have their music classes Mr. Gram did have to leave though. I was a bit upset, but he did have to teach the other kids, that was his job after all. I just continued practicing until lunch when Taylor and Camila came to get me.

"It's not fair! Why do you get to spend all your time in music class while we're stuck in boring math classes." Taylor was complaining as we made our way to a table that was free. We all had packed lunches, not wanting to spend money on the food the cafeteria provided.

"Well, if you want I could probably help you write a song that you can sing on your own and have Danny help you debut." I gave a suggestion that I'm sure would spark their interest. "You two will have to pass the same tests as me though."

"Yes, please, anything to get out of math class!" Taylor instantly jumped at the opportunity to get out of class while Camila just nodded her head with the same fire in her eyes as Taylor.

"Alright then. Now do you want to write your debut songs yourselves or would you like me to come up with something?" I wasn't going to stand in their way if they wanted to do things themselves, it's their lives after all.

"I'll try to come up with something on my own." Taylor rejected my offer and I didn't press her any further. I would support her, but not hold her hand the entire way.

"If you could write something for me..." Camila didn't finish, instead looking down and twiddling her fingers. She looked cute like this.

"Sure, give me a couple days and I should have something." I already had a song for her, but I needed to make it look like it took me a while.

After a while the bell to go back to class rang and I left the girls to go back to the music room. I ignored all the other students that were entering the room with me and moved to the instruments at the back.

Some of them didn't even know who I was, not having watched the news or listening to 'A Million Dreams'. Not that that would matter, everyone would know my name eventually, it was all just a matter of time.

I continued practicing until the end of the day, being picked up by a car that would take me to Danny's recording studio where I would continue playing music for the album. This cycle continued for the week, practicing one song during the school day than practicing a second and third at the studio.

During that week I had ended up giving Camila the lyrics to 'Don't Go Yet', one of her songs in my old world. There was a bit of Spanish in the song, but she was from Cuba so that shouldn't be a problem for her. If she needed backup singers, then I could help her as well or get Danny to arrange some for her.

Finally, it was the day of the first interview. I was really nervous; this would be my first time on TV, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had practiced answering some questions with Ms. Portman, but practice and the real deal were two different things.

"You're nervous, aren't you Shawn." Ms. Portman next to me asked the obvious question. I nodded my head, and she giggled a bit. "You don't need to worry about anything, I'll be right next to you the entire time."

I took a deep breath and nodded my head once more. I was still nervous at what to expect but knowing that she would be right next to me gave me a bit of confidence. One of the members of the talk show crew walked over to us and told us that it was time.

"Alright, lets do this." I took Ms. Portman's hand and we walked out onto the stage after the host called our names. We waved at the crowd, making them erupt into cheers and applause. Finally we made it to our seats and sat down next to the host, me closer to him since I was the song writer.

"Ladies and gentlemen, can we get one more round of applause for the rising star of the music industry, Shawn Mendes!" The host hyped up the crowd once more and I just smiled and waved. When they finally calmed down the host turned back to me.

"Shawn, you and your song have been probably the most searched music related item in the world. People are wondering who you are, where you came from and how you did it?" We had practiced this question so I knew how I should answer.

"Well, for those who don't know I happen to be an orphan." This caused a wave of 'aws' to come from the crowd. "Don't worry, I'm doing just fine. I really just had an idea for a song then wrote it down. I asked someone famous to help me sing the song and now here we are."

"I have to say that's incredible. You just 'had an idea' and all of a sudden you're the biggest star in America. Did you have any help writing the song?" The crowd all expected me to answer yes, but I shook my head.

"Nope, I wrote all of it. I did have help when it came to practicing and playing it though." The crowd were shocked. Many people didn't think that I would be able to write something that good from such a young age.

"And there are even rumors that you are writing an album now, is that also true?" I smiled and turned to the crowd.

"Yup, I'm making an album! That is actually why I've come here today, a week after the album is published I'll be having a concert performing songs from that album. The studio I work with is also bringing in other artists to help fill out time, but the concert is for me."

The crowd started cheering again hearing that I would be holding a concert. Some even tried to pull out their phones and find tickets online, but I quickly shut them down.

"The tickets haven't been put on sale yet, we still need to finalize some details before we start selling tickets." The crowd all groaned and I just smiled back at them.

"Well, we all look forward to seeing what your concert is going to be like." The host then turned his attention to Ms. Portman for the first time. "And you, Natalie Portman, what exactly is your relationship with Shawn. It must be close to get a part in his song."

"I'm the caretaker of the orphanage he lives in. I got the part because he heard me singing to some of the other children and he decided to include me." There were more cooing noises as they listened to what Ms. Portman had said.

"Are you going to be in any of Shawn's songs from his new album?" Ms. Portman instantly shook her head denying her involvement.

"Actually, the new songs are all just going to be me singing. The concert will include 'A Million Dreams' but other than that no other singers will be involved." I answered the question while also giving some insight into the concert to get people more interested.

"And do you have a date for when the album is going to be released?" The crowd all leaned in to hear my answer.

"I plan to have the album out by the end of next month, if not a bit earlier." The crowd cheered in excitement hearing my answer. Then a red light flashed on indicating that we were about to go to commercial.

"Well, it looks like we are out of time for this segment, but don't go anywhere. Right after the commercials we will be right back with Shawn Mendes singing one of his songs called 'Troublemaker'. See you soon!"
