Chapitre 110: Roxy's Desperation

***** Roxy's POV *****

I heard a small sound as my eyes snapped open. I was in a small crevice barely large enough for a person to fit. The area around me was lit up by a dimly glowing magic circle. After warping around numerous times and narrowly escaping monsters along the way.

As long as I remained within this small, cramped area, no monsters could come teleporting in. Once I found my way to this small haven of safety I've sat here ever since. I don't even know how long I've been here. It's always so dark I can't tell day from night.

I can make as much water as I need but just recently I've run out of food. If I continue to just sit here I'll only starve. The only way out from here is to step on that magic circle but once I do I'm certain that I'll be sent into another den of monsters.

The beasts of this labyrinth knew I was here. They were intelligent for monsters. They are aware of where these magic circles send you, this is their home after all. I was certain that they were waiting for me to use this magic circle. They are waiting on the other end ready to tear me limb from limb.

My corpse will never be found. The beasts will leave nothing of me to find. I would die and no proof of my existence would remain.

I still haven't accomplished anything. I still have my dream of becoming a teacher. That's why once I made my way back to Sharia, I planned to take the teacher's exam and become a professor at the University of Magic.

My master was there, a professor at the University of Magic. We had a falling out as I left. It was my fault. I was too prideful and arrogant. If we were to meet again, we might fight and bicker, but I had a feeling we could work things out and get along better now.

"Hah."

A self deprecating chuckle slipped from my lips. That was never going to happen. I'll never find normal happiness. My destiny is to die here all alone and my death was sure to be a miserable one.

The only thing keeping me from stepping onto that magic circle was the fear of death, but my death was inevitable. It's already been at least a week. Nobody is coming to save me. The only chance I have to live is through that circle. It's either I slowly starve to death or I make a final stand and take my chance at life, however small, that lies beyond that magic circle.

And so, I stepped into the circle. Not because I was prepared to die, but because I really did want to live. As if it was predetermined, I found myself right in a monster's den, just as I feared.

I could tell at a glance that escape was impossible. The monster's had heaped up the bodies of their dead brethren to blockade the only exit and the hoard of monsters arranged themselves in an impeccable formation.

The tough as steel Iron Crawler's charged at me from the front while Death Road Tarantulas spit webs at me to slow my movements. In the back were huge mud giants, Mud Skulls, who hurled boulders at me.

'They're almost like an actual army', I thought as I began weaving my magic.

"Envelop me in Earth's magnificent armor. [Earth Fortress]!"

I summoned a shield of Earth to stop the charging Iron Crawlers.

"Scatter the falling droplets; blanket the world in water. [Water Cascade]!"

Countless spheres of water shot towards the approaching hoard drenching them in water.

"Blue goddess sweeping down from the heavens, wield thy staff and cover this world in frost! [Icicle Field]!"

The water soaked front line of the approaching army froze in place thanks to [Frost Nova], the melded magic of [Water Cascade] and [Icicle Field].

"King of Frost, supreme ruler of the arctic lands, sovereign wrapped all in white whose frigid cold robs all heat. Freeze thy enemy, oh glacial king who governs death! [Blizzard Storm]!"

Frozen lances soared over the front line that I had frozen solid, skewering dozens of beasts stuck behind their frozen brethren.

"I can do this!"

For a moment, I felt the light of hope only for it to be squelched out unceremoniously as countless more monsters appeared from magic circles in the back of the room, replacing all those I had just killed.

One of the Mud skulls smashed a hole through my [Earth Fortress] and the Iron Crawlers started squeezing their way through. A chill ran up my spine as the monstrous caterpillars skittered their way towards me.

"Take up thy burnt blade and pierce through my enemy! [Flame Slice]!"

A fiery sword flew through the air and cut through the Iron Crawler's tough carapace, killing it only for two more to immediately replace it from behind.

"Envelop me in Earth's magnificent armor. [Earth Fortress]!"

*Wham!*

The Iron Crawlers slammed into the newly formed shield only a couple meters in front of me. I could feel my consciousness trying to pull away. I was dangerously low on mana. If I kept this up, I could only manage a spell or two more before I faint.

'I can't do this. I don't want to die! No! No!'

"Nooo!!!!!"

I screamed in terror as webs grabbed hold of my staff, ripping it from my hand. I could see the heads of the Iron Crawlers creeping up above the wall in front of me as they crawled over it.

'I'm going to be eaten alive, aren't I?'

"Someone please...", I cried.

The Iron crawlers had made it completely over the wall and were both charging towards me.

'I guess I won't get to see my Mother and Father anymore...'

This was my last thought as I snapped my eyes shut, preparing for the impending pain.

I waited for a bit... but the pain never came. Maybe I just died instantly. Is this the afterlife?

Timidly, I slowly opened my eyes. An unimaginable sight laid before me. It was a world of ice. The Iron Crawlers, the Death Road Tarantulas, even the Mud Skulls at the back... all of them had been transformed into pure white statues.

*Crack*

The head of the Iron crawler in front of me crumbled off and fell to the ground where it splintered. Even the insides of the monsters were frozen solid! The gulf in power between whatever spell this was and my own was vast.

"Huh?"

I reached out to grab my staff that had been knocked from my hands.

"Eek!"

I dropped it reflexively as just touching it had frozen the skin on my hand. It clattered to the ground, echoing in the eerie silence.

"Oh thank God! You're alive!"

A somewhat familiar voice pierced through the silence. I turned to see a young man who had walked around the earthen wall I had summoned. He was clad from head to toe in onyx black armor the likes of which I'd never seen before.

The man embraced me tightly and began to weep.

"Thank God... Roxy... you're alive. I don't know what I would have done if I lost you again..."

"Eh? Huh? Do I... know you?"

He stumbled back a step or two as though I had just struck him.

"Oh... that's right. You wouldn't recognize me with this on would you?"

The man reached up and pulled off his pure black helmet revealing a young man's face. He had soft blond hair with gentle features. His eyes were full of tears but he wore a bright smile.

'Wait... I do recognize this man... This is...'

"Rudeus! Did you find her? Did you find Roxy!?"

Another familiar voice yelled out from the other side of the room. Suddenly a woman with fiery red hair jumped up to the top of the wall. How did she get here so fast!?

"R-Rudeus?", I repeated the name timidly.

"That's right Roxy. I'm here. You're safe now", Rudeus answered as he embraced me once more. He nuzzled his chin against my neck as he rested his head on my shoulder. He seemed overcome with emotion.

"Ah!"

I suddenly realized that I hadn't bathed in over a week! As soon as I realized I shoved him away. At first he looked surprised, but then it was replaced with an understanding look.

"You don't have to worry. It doesn't bother me."

My face flushed red with embarrassment. I wanted to yell at him, but that would be no way to thank my savior.

"T-thank you... Rudeus. Thank you for saving me."

"No need for thanks. It's only natural I would come for you."

"But how? How did you even know I was down here?"

"Geese sent me a letter that you were in trouble."

"...Oh."

He must have been close by. It's a miracle he was close enough to receive a letter and make his way here in only a week. Wait, didn't he say he was headed for Sharia last time we met? That's on the other side of the...

As these thoughts ran through my head, the world grew dark as I passed out. I really was exhausted.

L’AVIS DES CRÉATEURS
Coolex Coolex

This chapter will seem quite familiar to those who have read the light novel (Or I guess seen the anime at this point). I did make some changes, but the way in which she was saved was largely similar to the original. I didn't want to just skip over her rescue though, so I decided to dedicate a chapter to it.

Next chapter is when the surprise comes. (Should hopefully have the next one done by this upcoming Sunday)
