Chapitre 24: Who Was That Woman?

Feeling happy about her success, she motivated Alec with sweet words about Cassian. Only she knew how much her mouth hurt from lying so much.

But all for freedom and money!

Alec reluctantly helped her. He did not like the Duke. If he was his father, he was an awful father. But if he is not, then Alec could not deny that the Duke had provided them with a place to live and delicious food. He would not be an ungrateful bastard as they said. He wanted to thank the Duke.

"Would it be enough to thank His highness, my lady?" He was not sure as he looked at the large crown of flowers in his hands. He was sure the Duke would have a real crown embellished with jewels!

"Yes! It looks perfect!" She clapped her hands as she stood up and held his hands and pulled him too.

"But it would be better to ask His highness about it." She held Alec's hands and pulled his reluctant body towards the palace.

When they crossed the garden, they noticed two recently acquired carriages standing on the other side.

"My lady, I think there are guests. We should not go and disturb His highness. He must be busy." Alec reasoned, for some reason, he felt unease to visit the duke who looked at him with a complex look.

What if the Duke was scorning him and contemplating how a child like Alec could be his child? The thoughts left a bitter taste in his mouth. He knew that he was useless as a noble, but he never got the chance to learn. If the duke would have taught him, he would have improved.

Only the lady treats him well.

"Nonsense! What could be more meaningful than meeting you and getting a gift from you? I am sure His highness would like it. But if he did not want to meet with us, the knights would inform us about it." she assured him and dragged him towards Cassian's office.

"My lady." The knights bowed their heads with respect when they saw her. The butler had warned them in the morning to be respectful of both of them. But even if the butler had not said a word, the knights noticed how the girl was treated by the Duke. They did not dare to disrespect her.

"Good morning, Sir Walen. I wanted to meet His highness." The knight was surprised by her formal speech. She had finally developed her own way of speaking. But..!

"My lady, there are guests inside. It would be better to come later." He felt uneasy as he looked at the knights of another house standing beside him.

Mary noticed them too. But since they did not greet her, she did not greet them back. But now... She felt the unease on the face of Alec as if he wanted to run away and hide somewhere and felt conflicted.

"Are you sure he did not have a minute to spare us?" She was sure if they left, Alec would not be ready to return.

She knew that she was being unreasonable but the duke should understand too that Alec should be his priority.

"That." the knight paused, "I shall visit and ask His highness about it." he said with a smile but the knight from the family of count Barton frowned.

He looked at her with a scornful gaze and then at the knight who was about to knock on the door.

"Are you serious?" he asked in an incredulous voice, "you are intending to disturb the lady and His highness because a maid asked you to?" He berated the knight harshly when Alec held her tightly and tried to hide behind her.

Mary frowned as her eyes narrowed at the knight who looked back with disdain.

If you can not see properly then you should consult and visit a doctor. Buy high-quality specs for yourself. From which angle do you think I am a maid? Am I wearing the uniform of a maid?" she asked in a cold voice when the knight frowned. He had no idea what the doctor's and specs were! But he understood that the girl was insulting him and that infuriated him.

"Then you are just a commoner! Your position is even lower than maids'. What right do you have to disturb your highness?" The knight was sure that she was not a noble by the way she walked and spoke. It was as if she was not even from their empire.

She spoke their language but her accent was completely different.

"Ha! What kind of logic is that? And more than that, who are you to decide whether I should be here or not? Only the Duke had the right to decide if he wants to meet us or not!" she retorted back when the knight felt that his house was insulted.

"Do you even know I belong to the family of Count Barton?" she laughed amused as he tried to behave like a proud peacock. But when did she care about their class system?

"So? Shall I be dancing with happiness that I got the chance to see your ugly face?" she then turned to Walen, "are you going to ask him or not?" her voice was so cold and low that it reeked of danger.

He could not believe that a weak and petite individual could show such boldness that he felt her image overlapped with the duke.

He bowed his head and turned to knock on the door. However, it opened before he could knock on it and the Duke was standing at them.

"Why are you making so much noise?" asked the girl as she followed Cassian and glared at her knight who looked wronged. However, Mary ignored their presence and turned to look at Cassian.

"Are you busy? Do you not have a minute to spare for us?"
