Chapitre 34: Chapter 34: Lucky

After about a third of the crowd left the examination hall, Minato piped up again and said,

"Alright, everyone. By now you might have realized what this test is about. This test is about your resolve! For a shinobi, every time you walk out the door, you risk death. It's paramount that you live regardless of that fear. Do not let the potential to fail or even die keep you from trying: how could your villages trust you if you fled at the slightest sign of trouble?" He finished with a smile

The remaining kids looked around, proud that they had passed the test, and began filling in their sheets. Another 20 minutes later, everyone had turned their papers in, and were waiting by the door to be let out. Kannin wasn't so sure. He knew Minato had a lot of gears turning behind his childish attitude, and he was willing to bet there was something deeper with the test.

He was the last one to finish the test, and he racked his brain thinking about which question was the landmine. Most of them were questions on history, short answers about what kinds of weapons were best for what, a calculus question, and...Wait a minute, a calculus question? Minato's whole thing was about mission preparedness. Why would there be a differential equation?

He left that one blank and answered the other 9, and turned it in to Minato, who looked at his paper and gave him a grin.

"Good going, Kannin."

They waited for another few moments, before Minato began shouting,

"The following genins fail: Mitudashi Sakura, Hareru Fumu..."

Hearing their names called out, many of the waiting genins were shocked. They thought they had already passed by staying in the first place. After listing off a little less than half the remaining contestants, he put on another, this time devious, grin.

"While resolve is of utmost importance for a shinobi, there is another thing which determines their success as well!" He let the words diffuse for a moment, "Luck! The rule about the landmine question remained in place, and those of you who answered it are out!" After saying this, he looked at Kannin and another shinobi behind him, who Kannin saw was Kakashi, and continued, "However! There is a way to overcome luck. Brainpower, and I see a number of you were able to determine which question was the landmine using your smarts! So congratulations"

A number of those who passed looked at him like he was crazy, but went through the door anyway. The next section was the survival test. The rest of them were taken to the Forest of Death, and each team was assigned a different rare plant to collect. If they could find it in an hour, they passed. But, of course, there was a catch. Since there was an even number of teams, two teams had been assigned to each plant, and if both teams returned with their plant, they both failed.

'Gimme a break' Kannin thought.

Team 4 was assigned a yellow carnivorous plant that eats small rodents and amphibians, easy enough to find with Sharingan and shadow clones. It was really only a matter of making sure the other team didn't get it.

Kannin created a dozen shadow clones to go search for all the other plants like theirs for recon. When the hour was almost up, and the other team hadn't come for the plant, they began to panic. What if they missed them? They decided to head to the entrance of the Forest of Death, to try to catch their enemies as they left. When they arrived, they saw that every other team seemed to have the same idea. A bunch of kids were waiting by the entrance, scouring the others to see what plant they had.

When Kannin saw Kakashi there, he looked to see what plant his team (which was composed of a few random Konoha-nin he had never met) had, he couldn't see it. They seemed to be hiding it like everyone else. Kannin went over to Kakashi, who looked pretty bad. His eyes were sunken, his hair was a mess, and he was covering his mouth as usual

"Hey there, I think we were the only ones who were able to figure out Minato's test."

Kakashi looked over at him and said, "Even if it did take you 'til the very end."

Kannin chuckled, "I suppose it did take me a while, my brain was a little addled from the giant crowd. How long did it take you?"

"Five minutes."

'Wow' Kannin thought. "You really are a genius. I thought I was pretty smart."

"The difference between 'pretty smart' and genius is the difference between dying and surviving out in the world." Kakashi said coldly

Kannin didn't expect Kakashi to be so rude, but his dad did pass away recently, so he didn't blame him. Kannin knew all about the vacancy left behind by a dead father, but he never had to suffer the loss itself.

"What makes the difference between dying and living isn't your smarts, Kakashi, its your friends and teammates. I'm sure Minato would agree."

"What makes you think Minato-sensei would agree with you?" Kakashi asked with some scorn

"Well, we're friends aren't we?"

"You are friends with Minato-sensei? Forgive me if I don't believe you."

"Well, next time you see him, ask him about Uzumaki Kannin. I'm sure he'll tell you."

Seeing that Kakashi wasn't in the mood to talk to him, he left him alone. He did what he could to steer him in the right direction, but it really wasn't up to him. Kakashi would have to grow on his own.
