From somewhere in the foliage beyond the clearing sat a gloomy looking ninja. She had deep blue hair which laid flat to her shoulders and curled up at the ends. She wore a standard black undersuit with a greenish-tan flak jacket and pale blue shorts.
Taking a look at the scroll she was given, she said to herself "An Uzumaki, a Sarutobi, and an Uchiha--give me a break. I was supposed to go on holiday and now they have me babysitting kids." She shook her head, "I guess I ought to begin. Better to get it over with sooner."
While the three were admiring their shiny new forehead protectors, she flashed behind them and cleared her throat. The three jumped and turned to see a jonin in her mid 20s, with navy blue hair and a number of scars on her face. Warai shrieked in response.
"Woah, calm down, I'm your team leader for the time being."
Warai composed herself and retorted "Oh...well I wasn't frightened of you, just your fashion sense."
Team leader furrowed her brows, and said "My name is Harakaze Shin, and I'm here to test you."
Kannin recalled the bell test that all the great shinobi went through over the years, and expected the same to come out of Shin-sensei's mouth, but he was taken aback when he heard
"If you can manage to make me remove my feet from the ground, then I will declare you real shinobi!"
'That wasn't how it was supposed to go' Kannin thought. 'This might actually be more fun, though'
The three surrounded Shin and began thinking of how they were going to achieve their goal, when Shin added,
"And if you fail, all of you will have to return to the academy!"
Warai, Kannin, and Tetsu's faces fell to the floor, and then returned with even more determination. Kannin shouted to the others "I'm thinking formation delta for this one gang!"
The others took a moment, and smiled, Tetsu shouted back, "It could definitely work. Warai, you ready?"
Warai nodded and the three began forming hand seals simultaneously. When Shin saw this she was surprised, normally fresh academy grads only knew basic Taijutsu and Shurikenjutsu, all three of them knowing their own jutsus impressed Shin, but nonetheless she readied herself for what was the equivalent of a newborn baby lion's roar. She didn't know that 'Formation Delta' was, but it couldn't be anything out of her ability.
When they finished their hand signs, it turned out that Warai had been faking, and immediately shot 4 shuriken at Shin's feet. Just then
"Water Release: Gunshot!"
"Earth Release: Earth-Style Double Wall!"
As Shin moved her feet away from the incoming shuriken, two 5 foot tall mud walls erupted on her sides, forcing her to move straight back, into the giant water ball Kannin just shot from his mouth.
Shin was impressed, they had more coordination than some established genin teams. But, unfortunately, it was too weak, too slow, and too predictable. When the shuriken and water shot struck Shin, her body turned into a block of wood in a puff of smoke, and she appeared 15 feet behind Tetsu.
"Oh come on! Body Replacement? That's so unfair!"
Warai groaned and threw her remaining shuriken to the ground.
"Rule number 1 of being a shinobi: there's no 'unfair' or 'fair,' just whoever survives"
The three graduates looked at each other and gritted their teeth. This fight wasn't going to be as easy as they thought.
Shin looked at them regathering their resolve, and said "You can't have that much chakra left. Let's see how long you can keep it up."
The answer to how long they could keep it up was about an hour of floundering while Shin sidestepped, poofed into a log, or turned into a clone to avoid all their efforts.
Around this time she stopped and looked at them plainly, saying, "You should just give up. You're never going to catch me."
Tetsu looked down with a disappointed face and muttered, "maybe...maybe we should." He looked back at Kannin and Warai, "Nothing's working."
Kannin was pretty sure this wasn't a simple test of skill, like with Kakashi and Team 7 in the manga. He also knew that becoming a true shinobi was the most important thing he could do in this life--he was not about to give up. He regathered his courage, amassed what was left of his chakra, and set his feet in the ground. "I'm not giving up, even if it takes me all day."
Shin raised an eyebrow at his indignation, and said again, "I really don't wanna be here all day, so just make it easier on me and go home."
Warai looked back with renewed fervor and said "Like hell I'm giving up on this!"
Tetsu seemed a little ashamed to have suggested they give up when he saw his friends being so stubborn, and grit his teeth.
Shin saw this and groaned "Come on. This is getting annoying"
The fight resumed, and they spent the better part of the afternoon launching themselves at Shin, and failing every time. In the end, they were all lying breathless on the ground, burned out of chakra, and with every inch of their body aching.
Shin looked down at them, and reluctantly admitted, "Well I have to say you three are some of the most skilled genins I've ever met. Your grasp of ninjutsu and tactics is way beyond the average, and your teamwork is exemplary. Unfortunately, you couldn't get me to lift my feet, so you didn't succeed."
Just then, Kannin smirked, Shin had stood herself between the his legs and Warai's, and he quickly spun himself, trying to sweep her off her feet. She poofed into air, and another Shin walked up afterward, looking at Kannin and continued:
"You didn't let me finish, Uzumaki." She took a deep breath and added, "While you didn't manage to make me remove my feet from the ground, that was only your goal. The real test was to determine your, well," she paused a moment trying to find the right word, "determination. Much to my chagrin, you blockheads convinced yourselves to keep fighting the whole way through. So congrats, welcome to Team 4."
