"H-huh? What...what do you mean? I-it hasn't even been a minute since you started examining her," I muttered in shock, refusing to believe it.
Th-this is some kind of fake-out thing, right? Y-yeah, any minute now, he's gonna be all like 'sike!' and reveal that she's totally fine now, right? Right?
"Sorry, but it's true...she's dead. Maybe an hour earlier and I'd have been able to save her. But I was too late."
J-just...just one hour? Just one hour earlier and she'd still be alive? That's...that's not fair...she was stable for all these months, and in the end, a difference of an hour was all it took!?
"N-no...no, this can't be happening...," I trailed off, shaking my head as I stumbled back.
"Well, that's a real shame, kid. You almost did it, too...tell you what, we'll pay you a little extra next time, okay?" Remarked one of the others, patting my shoulder, before his phone began ringing, "Yeah, hello?"
"How did it go?" Came the response, the audio loud enough to hear even though it wasn't on speaker.
"Uh, hey, you might want to-...," Began one of the other men.
"Mhm, great. No issues," He replied to the caller.
"Good to hear. Bring the body right away, you took too long last time and the organs weren't in ideal condition. Make sure to use ice to-...," The caller instructed, before the doctor quickly snatched the phone away and hung up the call.
Huh?
"Hey, the hell, man!?" The guy who answered the call exclaimed indignantly.
"Your volume was turned up too high, idiot," He hissed in response.
Wait...h-hold on, what did I just hear? No, that...that can't be right. Why did the caller mention organs? N-no, I must have heard it wrong...no, I know that I didn't.
But, then...why? Why did I work so hard for all this time? Was I...being tricked right from the start? That can't be right...it just can't! I...I was trying to save my aunt...there's no way everything I did, all that time I spent, there's just no way it was for nothing, damn it!
My eyes then widened in horror...my aunt's condition, when it first took a turn for the worst, it was around the same time the charity organization took over the small group that had been helping us.
And when that happened, the people who'd been part of the initial group had been replaced by the people who were currently running this area. A lot of people have been helped by them, but...there have also been a lot of deaths in this area after they showed up...
"What...what did you do to her? What have you people been doing for all this time!?" I snapped furiously, as it all started to become clear to me.
"Well, this was totally my fault...my bad, guys," Sighed the guy who answered the call, before suddenly knocking me down and pinning me to the ground.
"Y-you bastard...what have you done!?" I growled as I tried to push him off of me, but to no avail.
"Here, use this. It's a good thing I prepared for if something like this happened," The 'doctor' sighed in exasperation, as he handed the guy pinning me a syringe.
"Ohh, nice!" He grinned as he took it and moved it towards my neck.
"T-tell me...what the fuck did you do!?" I snapped, tears of rage pouring down my face.
"Hm...sure, why not? There's no harm in telling you now that it's come to this...we're not from a charity, that's just a front. We deal in human organs in the black market, you see, but they can be so hard to acquire. Then, we realized...why not take the organs from people no one will miss or notice are gone?
And the easiest way to gain access to such people, is to volunteer to help them. Of course, if people start disappearing like flies, that'd be a problem for us. So we had to take our time...the medicine we've been providing you with, it's actually a poison our research team developed.
It's quite incredible, it slowly but surely deteriorates the body, but without damaging the organs. The problem is that it works way too slowly, and requires regular, continuous dosages. And you working so hard to keep you aunt healthy slowed the spread of the poison further...the cheap, and actual, medicine we provide for free turned out to partially counteract the poison!" He chuckled in amusement.
"Y-you son of a bitch...!" I shot back, as it tried to pull his hand off my throat.
"Quite ironic, isn't it? Hah! Well, anyway, it took some time, but she's finally dead. Most of the sorry excuses for people in this area are drug addicts or alcoholics, their bodies were already in shit states to begin with, so they died much sooner, unlike your aunt who survived for so long.
Man, this was a lot of effort we put into killing just one person, it doesn't feel worth the trouble anymore. You know, if you think about it, you kinda killed her too...if you'd stopped buying our medicine or just given up, she'd have recovered on her own!
But thanks to you, her body never got the chance to get better...you kept poisoning her, week after week, giving her no respite. Tell me, I have to know...how does that make you feel?" He leaned down with a vicious smirk, before I reached up and violently plunged my thumbs into his eyes, eliciting a scream of agony from him as he dropped the syringe and fell back, blood pouring down his face, "Argghhhhh, you...y-you little shit, my fucking eyes!!!"
"I-I'll kill you...I'll kill you, I'll kill you, I'll fucking kill you, you rotten pieces of sh-...!" I began in a seething rage as I started to get up, before trailing off as I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder.
I turned my gaze that way, my eyes widening in horror as I saw the 'doctor' kneeling down beside me, having plunged the syringe into me...
