I took in a calming breath and waited. I knew that by coming back here there was a chance that Cole would show up. Hell, Jack had insisted that--- Yes! He was going to show up and I’d better prepare for that. And a smile tugged at my lips remembering that. Jack hadn’t told me to stay behind or remain somewhere where I’d be safe. He’d held me and told me to brace for the inevitable.

I noticed how Cole’s eyes flickered to where Master Azrael and the other vampires were leaving in their cars. His nostrils flared and I sensed an echo of his wolf’s anger as his eyes momentarily flashed gold. I’d always been intrigued by that, thinking it was some trick of the light. Now that I knew what it was, I was tempted to kick my own but forever being that stupid…
